During that time he has built up the Sacramento school system to its present enviable position among the schools of the nation. What leisure he can find Mr. Hughes spends in resting at his beach home or rooting for his favorite foot- ball team-Stanford. The people who give Mr. Jensen his home- Work-the school board and the city super- intendent. Reading from left to right, they are Dr. A. M. Henderson, Dr. John Ken- nedy, Mr. Charles E. McCormick. 1 ii' 5 4 3 www W Cr K Q U w Hi Wifi MISS FERGUSON: -'Always the gracious lady, be- sides being a clever and capable vice-principal, our busy Miss Ferguson pauses a moment for us to snap her, In addition to managing the counseling depart,- ment, she must put her O. K. on every program and rally we see. Also she supervises the school clubs and compiles the semester schedule of classes from which the students make their daily programs. MR. LAWSON: The genial smile of Mr. Lawson, our competent vice-principal. discloses his kind na- ture and willingness to help us. He is vice-principal in charge of instruction and curriculum building. His other duties include supervision of student govern- ment, substitute teacher. commencement, and traffic. MISS McGREW: f-Caught in the act! Miss McGraw is having a well earned rest while we snap her. This industrious teacher is the supervisor of instruction under Mr. Lawson, which is quite a task. Miss McGrew has quite a lot to do with student testsg if theres something wrong with your I. Q., she's the the one who will find it out. x1lz.1.lA,mo.l. l.lXN miss l.l..XX1lII-. 1.1:.xxlvfx1.x1lm-. They must be easy to find because they are the most sought after people in the school. Business never lags for them. At program changing time they are the busiest and most ingen- ious of the faculty. They can deftly twist stubborn periods into a very satisfactory program, and they must do this for every individual in the long queue which is often found outside their doors. The picture at the lower right seems to have been taken in one of those rare intervals when nearly everyone was without troubles and in his assigned class. Aside from their duties as counselors each one teaches a class or two, and some sponsor clubs or classes. They are the main contact between school and home. They must soothe the irate parent, make promises for the wayward child's improve- ment, and gently chide those scholars with meandering minds and low marks. The counselors create the low sophomores first impression of high school, and it is a very favorable one. They can be depended upon not to sell an elevator ticket to some aimlessly wandering little soph. ll N1-31.1.11-'i.olu:ol,u' was 1-il.nx XI!li'I'll sm u1ss1..l.ol'1si-1 il,.X,X uns. They repeated this victory in the second semester against the incoming sophomores. Following this triumph, one of the most important events of the second year. the Junior Prom, was reigned over by June Johnson, a very popular and lovely queen. This event was equaled if not surpassed by the annual junior plays. The short one-act plays presented were Grandma Pulls the Strings and The Ransom of Red Chief. In the last year the rising tide of successes of the class was climaxed by a Senior Ball presented Janu- ary. 1939, with music guided by the able hand of George Breece. Sprinkled among the more important activities were council meetings, parties, and other lesser events. The monthly council meetings were eagerly attended by the class representatives. Im- portant. business such as school activities and the running of the school in general was discussed. Each meeting was made more enjoyable by games, re- freshments, and gossip. In the spring of the year 1939 Rose of the Rancho was presented by a cast of competent young actors and actressesg and after this comes the most thrilling event of all-graduation. Now that we feel so old and superior, we take time to look back over our years at high school. We lightly skip over our sophomore year and concentrate on our junior year. On December 2, 1938, our class, then low juniors, gave the traditional Junior Prom with the high junior class. A high junior, Jerry Schreiber, was elected queen of the prom. On May, 18, 1939, the class gave a banquet for all of the past and present council members, Having become so mature, wc have finally decided on our gift to the school, which will be new and very handsome wrought iron signs bearing the words: Sacamento Senior High School. Even though they were out numbered almost two to one, their superior strategy and daring' courage carried them through to victory. Several weeks later all its members were seen walking around the halls with small signs saying Soph on them in preparation for the Sophomore Rush. The Rush was given on February 18, and the low sophomore boys and girls came out vic- torious. This was the first great victory of what promises to be a highly successful class. Later a dance was given to which the low sophomores were welcomed by being' allowed a ten per cent discount on the admission, and also the low sophomore girls were feted at Z1 tea given in the auditorium. Now that the members have settled to a steady routine, they are eagerly looking forward to next year when they will no longer be considered low sophomores. The second game with Chico High was just as successful, the score being 33 to 0. The third game with Lodi was a very hard fought one and it looked as if Sacramento would win its third consecutive game, but Lodi, with fifteen seconds to go, threw a long pass for a touchdown and won the game 13 to 12. It took three hard fought games before the Dragons could fully recover and work as smoothly as they did at the first of the season. The Dragons won from the strong Grant Union squad 13 to 0. The last game was with McClatchy, which had won easily from Brothers and Grant. The Lions were favored to win the game and also the city championship. The Dragons showed their true form and won the game 19 to 0. At a banquet after the game, Bob Ehrman was elected captain for the year.
