J IOR RE ERV ow IN THE middle of its second year under the banner of the junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Sacramento senior high school's military unit has become one of the major student activities. The cadet corps, as a member of the R. O. T. C., has this mission: to awaken in the student an appreciation of the obligations of citizenship to prepare him to dis- charge his duties as a citizen. Specific subjects which fall under the study of mili- tary include military courtesy and discipline, physical training, rifle marksmanship, drill and command, per- sonal hygiene, first aid, scouting and patrolling, musketry, map reading, organization, and leadership. The corps' enrollment is limited to 350 and is com- posed of five companies and a military band. The present instructors are james C. Bates, major, coast artillery, A. E. Waite, captain, national guard, and Claude J. Hilton, sergeant, regular army, formerly coast artillery. MAJOR JAMES C. BA'rEs URING the fall semester, john Burrell served as bat- talion commander with Milton Schwartz second in command. The company officers were: Company A, Dick Reese, commander, Bill Thomas, Tim Arai. Company B, jim Waite, commander, jack Leedy, james McDonald Company C, Wendell Gwinn, commander, Carlton Martyr, joe Gross. Company D, Phillip Hoffman, com- mander, Harold King, Bill Himmelmann. Headquarters Company, Roger Hilsman, commander, john Bartl, Fran- cis Davies. Other officers were Wilfred Dunn, Frank Drew and Clayton johnson. Pershing Carter was com- manding ofiicer of the band. The spring semester saw the appointment of Roger Hilsman as battalion commander, with Jim Waite second in command, and Wilfred Dunn, adjutant. Company ofhcers were: Company A, Dick Reese, commander, Clay- ton johnson, Frank Stillwell. Company B, Carlton Martyr, commander, Byron Vandenburg, jack MacQuarrie. Com- pany C, joe Gross, commander, Thomas McMahon. Com- pany D, Phillip Hoffman, commander, Harold King, Angelo Magni. Headquarters Company, Bill Himmel- mann, commander, jack Doyle, Ed. Dunn. The band, CAPTAIN A, E, WM-rg Bob Brosemer. Other officers were Thayer Douglas, Rich- ard Lemmon and Bill Davies. ES
