From this time on there will always be at least two senior high schools in this city. That will mean a new departure and a new experience for us. For all time then the annual of 1937 will stand as the last annual to represent the entire senior high school situation. From now on the annual too will have a friendly rival in the annual of the new school. Under the circumstances I believe it to be particularly fitting that The Review, in its usual fine spirit of friendship and co-operation, bid a welcome to the new Senior High School and extend a helping hand to the establishment and organization of a new Sacra- mento annual. I want to express my appreciation to the many members of the faculty and student body who have given faithfully of their time to the production of this annual. You have served a 606 school in a fine way: My congratulations to all! Principal if-gg, rn X V V D lu WW ff! 'fzf agyf F. MELWN LAWSON Vive-pr'i11cilI7f1l Ziff wa. Miss LAlIRITI I'A FERGUSON VIN-j71'f11z'Ij1ul COUNSELORS Y Rs JAMES CALLAGHAN MRS. MAUDE DALE OUNSELOR5 of the Sacramento senior high school, we salute you! Your sympathetic understanding of our problems, your invaluable advice, your encouragement when we need it most, your expert guidance, yes, and your timely admonitions, have all made of us a finer, more competent group of future citizens. A tremendous job it is, for 10 men and women to super- vise the education of nearly four thousand students, for their education has many phases, and all are equally important. Our counselors must check on the deportment, attendance, scholarship, and citizenship of each and every one of us, and do all that they can to assist us in whatever manner we might Miss LouisE FLAA J. N. GARDNER most need their support. In conjunction with all these duties, our counselors have the added responsibility of teach- ing several classes during the day, however, with the coming of next semester, conditions will be greatly simplified, and it will be only with the passing of many years that member- ship in the Sacramento senior high school will be so great. So fundamental a change will enable our counselors to work out the individual problems of each student more com- pletely. Counselors of the Saciamento senior high school, for the great part you have played in the shaping of our futures, and in developing the very best in us, we try in vain to find a tribute that will measure your worth. lime 3 I i Miss BLANCHE GRANDE-ISIAITRE Miss AILEEN JOSES MRs. The Winter class of 1937 was exceptional in this respect. The students maintained the same high scholastic standard of previous classes and in addition was exceptionally out- standing in the fostering and completing of class projects. The 472 students who culminated three years of an active and worth-while school life under the sponsorship of George I. Linn, were loyal to the school and its traditions from the time they matriculated as timid low sophomores until they marched onto the auditorium platform to receive their diplomas, emblematic of a job well done. The first class paper was edited by Fred Chapman in the low junior year. This was the class's first spark of initiative tp show the rest of the school what might be expected from t em. In co-operation with the low juniors, they offered the junior prom, Fan-cy Dance, at the David Lubin Audi- torium. A fan motif featured the affair. The senior play, Remember the Day, was an apt title insofar as history is concerned because it long will be remem- bered not alone by the class itself but by those who wit- nessed it. The vehicle was under the direction of E. A. de Hermida and the locale was the Alhambra Theatre. The senior Ball in the memorial auditorium, January 26, with George Breece's orchestra, of course, was the dominant factor in the success of a colorful social season. Outstanding students in the class, both in class activity participation and scholastically, are too numerous to mention here, but a few will sufiice: Eugene Killam, Jack Leedy, Nadine Bushong, Helen Kit- terman, John Burrell, Barbara Carter, Eleanor Blair, Patricia Callaghan and Barbara Chapman, the last holding a class office each semester, really a marvelous record. In conjunction with the january class of 1937, a public address system was presented as the traditional class gift. It is a great advantage to the assemblies, programs and rallies and it will be used and enjoyed by many classes to come. The Fan-cy Dance, or the junior Prom, sponsored by the january and june class councils, was a financial as well as a Social success. Two hundred and fifty couples were present. It was held at the David Lubin Auditorium, and the music was furnished by Frank Gorden and his Orchestra. A senior paper was issued under the name Drag-On, Betty Ann Clow and Richard Lemmon acting as editors. For the first time in the school's history, a Christmas edition appeared with colored illustrations. As is always the custom, the low senior class decorated the auditorium and furnished ushers and taper bearers for the graduation exercises. The ceremony was excellently executed. The two crowning social activities of the class were the senior dance and the senior play. The students who have taken an active part in the class activities as class officers are: jerry Lewis, Eugene Maderos, Marion Bartell, Edward Hughes, Albert fBudj May, jane Dillon, Harold Lighty, Richard Lemmon, Bob David, Patty Lockett, joe De Cristoforo, Eleanor Scott, Joe Gross, Rich- ard Kilbourn, Bailey Hackett, Marguerite Goss, Elizabeth Tucker. This was one of the most important achievements of the junior classes. The title of the play was Happy-Go-Lucky and it was given in the high school auditorium. The second big event, in which our class played a large part, was the annual Junior Prom. This Prom differed from others for five reasons, namely: the Junior Queen, June Johnson, and her attendants, Mardelle Clavert, La Vida Libby, and Sue Slawson. The class of January, '38, should feel proud to know that they have left such a fine record in school functions. Much of the credit for this showing of school spirit Should go to Mrs. Donna Murphy, class sponsor, the class officers, and the class council. The high junior class, which is the second largest class in the school, has made quite a mark for following junior classes to aim for. ' ' One of the outstanding events of the year was the junior Prom, which was sponsored by the low and junior councils. Carlisle Kramer and his orchestra furnished the swing music that set the fun of the prom at a lively pace. june johnson was chosen queen of the prom. Those from the class council on the committee were: Hal Cooper, Ward Marshall, Dorothy Coon, Winigfred Patterson, Odia Howe, june Mor- gan, Hunter Bungay and Bill Drennon. A new tradition has been started by this junior class in sponsoring a junior play. The first junior play in Sacramento senior high school was Happy Go Lucky, with Bill Schang, Bonnie Jean Dutton, Constance Alexander, Peggy Darby, Gordon Severance, and Russell Strom playing important parts. This play was a great success, one which proves the dexterity of the high junior class. The leaders chosen to guide this class's activities for the fall semester were: Hal Cooper, president, Evelyn Lazzarone, vice-president, Beverly Blair, secretary, Dorothy Coon, treasurer. The ofhcers of the spring semester are: Sam Stone, presi- dent, june johnson, vice-president, Lorraine Cox, secretary, Dorothy Coon, treasurer. elif! All members have taken an active part in the meetings, and as a result, much has been accomplished in the two semesters. The credit for the work, however, should not be taken by the council members alone, for the class as a whole has been responsible for the wise selection of such an active council. ' Although this class is comparatively young, in comparison to the time spent at Sacramento senior high school, its record has been one of which the class members can rightly be proud. If this active class continues this work, which we are sure it will, when it finally leaves, it will be one of the outstanding classes of this high school. Without capable leadership, the activities of this class would have been limited, but with Miss Altha B. Crowley as class sponsor, the class has been fortunate in having so capable a teacher to direct their work and pleasure. VK I? WT fl ,fx Q., A GROUP OF LOW - -. .P 351.1 fi' REMEMBER THE PIG? ? ? Miss Frances Milnes, the class sponsor, has done all in her power to inspire this class to doing bigger and better things than any other previous class, and her work has not been in vain, for she is one of the outstanding sponsors of classes. The low sophomores started their career off with a vic- tory, by defeating the high sophomores at the sophomore rush, by a score of three to one. The spirit of victory is typically characteristic of this class, one which they will keep. The class council uses a gavel which was bought as a remembrance of the different class presidents whose names are engraved on the silver band which encircles the gavel. This class was well represented in the field of sports, several of the boys making the football and basketball teams, thus doing their share towards the victories of the Sacra- mento high school. The first oficers for the low sophomore term were as follows: President, Bob Metcalf g vice-president, Donald Le Masters, secretary, Helen Harford, succeeded by Francis Wardg treasurer, Harley Hill, senator, Ed. Rooney. The officers of the high sophomore semester are: Presi- dent, Chuck Wilde, vice-president, Kenneth Fettermang secretary, Mary Devine, treasurer, Harley Hill, senator, Donald Le Masters. The play, unsophisticated and simple, yet easily adapted to high school theatricals, was quite realistic. The romantic situation involving Roy Bursch as Dan Hopkins, small town athletic coach, and Carolyn jane Marsh as Nora Grinell, comely grade teacher, added zest to the plot, as did the childish whims of Dewey Roberts, portrayed by Bill Wamel, and Kate Hill, enacted by Nancy jane Krebs. In the Christian Broth- ers game, the first of the season, the Dragons were handed a startling 14 to 0 set-back by their Irish riv- als for the second time in the history of the school. Undaunted or discouraged, though, the Relles-coached boys went on to defeat the highly touted Lodi Flames, 7 to 6, and smeared the Placer eleven 24 to 0. Their defeat by the cham- pion Woodland eleven was fstrangely enoughj their greatest victory of the year for they played the formid- able Wolves to a standstill for four periods only to lose the game by a last- ditch score that had all the earmarks of a story-book touchdown. Paul Bowa, spark-plug of the team, and George Yamada, star end, were elected honorary co-captains at the end of the season. Many of the old familiar names and faces will be missing from the 1937 line- up due to graduation and transfers to the new high school now being con- structed. O N Bowa Breaks Away The loss of Ted Forbes, star quarterback, Bob Libbee, Greg Winter, Bob Lavine, Harry Niehaus and jim McClanahan due to transfers will no doubt be a great worry to Coach Relles as he had been counting on these men to compose the backbone of his next year's bacl-:field and line. Forbes and Libbee were greatly improved and going strong at the end of the season. Winter will be a great guard for Coach Frank Alustiza of the new high school, and Lavine, Niehaus and McClanahan will no doubt prove nemeses to the Relles- coached eleven next fall. The A team was more or less the hard-luck team, winning only a very small percentage of their games, but they worked hard all season and really deserved to win more than they did, for, individually, they were all stars. The loss by graduation in mid-season of Jack Rogers, star forward, was greatly felt in the scoring column. Coach Brorsen will lose many of his next yearls squad through transfer to the new school and all of his 936 A team will graduate this June. Among these will be: Glenn Dufour, Capt. So far his hopes for another Dragon championship have been justified for the class A tracksters have won two of their meets by wide margins and placed second in the Davis Invitational Meet. The B's have won all of their meets this season, including the Davis meet. The A's proved too powerful for the spike-shoed athletes of the Placer junior college and came out on top by a huge score. In the three-way meet with Rio Vista and Vacaville, the B's ran and jumped to an overwhelming victory over their rivals, piling up 76-If6 points while the combined efforts of the opposing teams netted only 41-5X6 points. On Saturday, April 10, the junior college stadium was the scene of COACH TOM WEEMS attack when the Dragons swamped the Lodi Flames in all three divisions, A, B and C. In the Cal Aggie Invitational meet at Davis, the limited team exceeded its performance of last year and walked off with first place and three new meet records. The A's were almost as good, taking second place. Bob Canson, class A, was high point man for Sacramento, taking nrsts in the pole vault and broad jump. Tip McLanahan, diminutive pole vaulter, broke his own meet record at II, ron . Tip broke his own Northern California class B record twice in as many weeks, going over the bar at IZ' 3 . 1 Rakela, class B, broke the broad jump record with a leap of 21'2 , and the class B relay team, com- posed of Rouse, Terrell, Coleman and Rakela, set a new high in that event. Ted Forbes, star hurdler, tied the meet record at I5 seconds in the 120 lows. pc Stalwarts of the team are: JD Class A: Bob Canson, pole vault and broad jump, joe jiral, sprints and football throw, Paul Bowa, sprints, Larry Takai, hurdles and broad jump, Bob Pardi, mile, Bob Libbee, quarter-mile, Grace, quarter-mile, Westling, 880, Rude, 880, jim Hayes, shot-put , Pete Mackiney, shot-put, Floyd Erhman, high jump, Bob Graham, pole vault and high jump, and Ray Overhouse, football throw. From the legion team, Bill Wright, Glenn Dufour Gene Harris, Joe Semon, Ted La- piana, joe Bottino, Mike Sypnicki, Chuck Ede, john Santich, Vincent Svilich, and Ed Hardiman. Up to the time that the Review went to press, the Dragon nine had fi s all!! won five out of eight. The locals lost to the Cal Aggies twice, and to the junior college nine. But in re- compense they downed the Christian Brothers school twice, the Grant Union Pacers, the Santa Clara Frosh and Chico State. Several other games with college nines were indefinitely cancelled because of bad weather. In the first game of the season, against the Santa Clara Frosh, the Dragons dished out their first de- feat, 15 to 9. Ray Davey and Bill Wright were the heavy stickers for the locals with three each. After waiting a week for the diamond to dry, the boys finally got their chance and polished off the Grant Union Pacers 15 to 1 in the worst massacre of the season. Glenn Dufour, usually a two-o'clock hitter, led the Dragon attack, banging out two home runs. Their 7 to 3 defeat by the Cal Aggies was quite an upset to Dragons. The Dragon netsters have already vanquished the racket boys of Stockton high, last year's champions, 4 to 2, and are all set to repeat their actions against Woodland and Lodi with whom they have sched- uled matches for April 22, 23, 27 and 30. A return match with Stock- ton will be arranged in the near future. At this time the official ladder has jack Gurley in the top spot, with Bill Hapgood, Bill Davis, Phil Nathan, Bob Blake, Morris Meizlisch, Dan Sullivan and Harold Wise following in that order. The tennis ladder is arranged on an elimination basis. Any boy may challenge the player directly above him and take his position. Players who are not on the ladder may become members of the team by defeat- ing the last player. The team is selected from the five highest names two days before the matches. Others who entered the school tournament are: Bert Hocking, Bob David, Ray Nelson, and Gil Freeman. CREW LTHOUGH a comparatively new sport, crew, under the direction of Coach Glenn Mercer of the junior college, has taken hold remarkably well during the past two years and was able to boast of a turnout of fifty boys this season. Other activities have lured most of these away but there are still enough on the squad to make a first class boatload of huskies. Manager Jack Tilton has arranged several match races with various schools of the state in- cluding Oakland and Alameda, and, if their dreams come true and they're good enough, a trip to Long Beach for the State championship races. Occupants of the first boat are: Stroke, Ed Taylor, 7, Tom Carrico, 6, Richard Kilbourng 5, Steve Bartellg 4, Bill Ball, 3, Darel jobeg 2, II. C. Griflith, and 1, Harry Nieuhaus.
