H li time was when low sophomores in any institution, and particularly in a senior high school, were not given much consideration by the students. All this has changed and the low sopho- mores are looked upon as an integral part of the school by upper classmen. Of course, the faculty and the administration always considered the sophomores as important in the affairs of the school as the other classes, but not so the stu- dents themselves. The Sacramento Senior High School was one of the nrst schools in the state, as far as upper classmen are concerned, to give consideration to low sophomores in student afiairs. The present low sophomore class at this school is considered by students and faculty as well. to be one of the finest ever enrolled. The class receives added impetus due to the fact that Mrs. Helen Spindler, member of the English de- partment, is the sponsor. She has had many years experience in guiding the destinies of classes through the low sophomore to the high senior year. The training along student body lines that is received by the low sophomore students is the basis or background for their future activities in the school. A well-defined organization among the beginning students means that in the years to come the high senior class will be a stronger group. ln addition to this it is only natural that the student body officers some day will be selected from among the low sophomores. The strength of any student body is reflected in the strength of the beginning classes. This has long been a favorite proverb of many, and may easily be applied to the activities of school clubs. ln a school the size of the Sacramento Senior lligh School, it is only natural that there should be many and varied organizations for the students to join. No matter what the individual's interests and hobbies, there should be some club that covers this particular subject. If science interests a student, it is possible for hi1n to become a mem- ber of one of the science clubs. There he will find other students who have the same hobby. and a sponsor who is eager to help him in the exploitation of that subject. Most of the clubs work in connection with some school subject. The clubs of this type are usually honor societies, and membership can only be gained through scholastic standing in classes. These societies and associations urge skill in various subjects, and membership in i Ninety-five is a form of reward for meritous work in classes. The honor sports associations have required as entrance qualifications a certain amount of activity in athletics. This urges students to excel in many different sports and indirectly keeps them physically lit. The band, orchestra, and glee clubs are formed right in class time and do not function at any other time except to take part in a social affair. There are tivo organizations to which mem- bership is automatic. l'pon entrance into the high school everyone becomes a member of the junior Red Cross, whether he takes an active part in its functions or not. and all girls become mem- bers of the Girls' League. School clubs offer an outlet for creative expres- sion and social inclinationsg many friendships have their beginning at a club meetingg valuable practical experience is gainedg and the opportu- ni v to have a lot of fun is offered the student. . s it any wonder clubs are a thriving part of S. ramento Senior High School life? Edmond Combatalade it Lourence Janssen Football Summary of Season l'l'll only one letterman returning for duty in the hacktield and an experienced line the Dragons of Sacramento engaged in a tough nine- game schedule. They won one out of nine games hut held the strong Lodi gridders to a scoreless tie and dropped a close decision to the lirothers College for the first time in twenty years of tra- ditional rivalry. The only win was hung up at the expense of the l'lacer Cnion foothall team. lhe team was followed continually with hard luck hut kept fighting although the odds were against them and at the end of the grid wars the following were awarded hlock letters: Senna, Yerdina, Urite, liach, Nlussilami, lio- vach, Yamada, Schultz, Marshall, Luchesse. Larson, johnson. Lyons, Stone, Roof. lfaneher. lian, Blcalillian, Hall, .Xnzore, tlarahedian, Mum- frey. Craig. Greer. Lewis, Nelson, Richardson, Mclierras, and Ferguson. Sacramento 0-Brothers College 6 The llragons opened the N35 season with the One Hundred Nineteen lirothers College as their opponents, to settle the city championship, .Xlthough Sacramento col- lected ten first downs to the Gaels two, the lrish scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter as a result of long accurate passes. The Dragons played good hall in the line and would have scored were it not for two untimely interceptions hy the opposition. Sacramento 6-Sequoia 12 ln a game which featured outstanding runs and thrills the Cherokees of Redwood City took the measure of the Capital City gridders hy virtue of a long ground drive and a quick aerial thrust. An unusual incident occurred when Yerdina on a wide run reversed f1'om one side of the field to the other and ran ahout sixty yards to advance the hall eleven. The lone Dragon touchdown was scored hy Senna on a run through hy right tackle and the attempt at extra point hy Greer went wide of the uprights and the locals were out in front at the half hut succumhed to a two touchdown at- tack hy Roche of the invaders in the last half. l , B FOOTBALL TEAM Sacramento 0-Vallejo 31 The Apaches from Vallejo High led by john- son. a triple halfback, proved too much for the Dragons by virtue of a last half rally. The locals held'the invaders to a coupile of touchdowns in the first half but johnson led his mates to a three touchdown scoring spree in the last half. The Apaches showed a powerful running attack and combined with a good aerial attack they had the contest well in hand at all times. Both coaches gave the game to the reserves late in the fourth quarter. Sacramento 14-Chico 18 The contest with Chico was a wide open affair with the Panthers barely nosing out the Dragons. The visitors scored twice in the first half but were unable to make good on their attempted conversions as did the locals. The Dragons made two points on a blocked punt and collected six more when Senna taking the kickoff ran eighty yards to score. In the third quarter the Panthers scored their third and last touchdown as a result of a fumble. The Dragons again scored on a long pass to Greer which fin- ished the scoring for both squads. Sacramento 0-Lodi 0 Displaying marked improvement over any other game played to date the Dragons took out their wrath on the Lodi Flames. The Dragons carried the battle to the Flames and would have scored were it not for a stroke of poor luck by an unfortunate penalty. Sacramento 0-Stockton 26 In the traditional big game between the two schools the Tarzans of Stockton gained a one- sided victory over the Capital City gridders by a second half avalanche of touchdowns. The first two quarters saw mainly a punting duel between Lyons of the Dragons and Grillo, with Lyons having the edge. The first score came as a result of a blocked punt and combined with a long pass and a short line jab the Tarzans led at the half by a margin of six digits. The Tarzans went to work and manufactured three touchdowns, one as a result of an interception and the third came after a ground drive from midfield. The fourth quarter an intercepted pass paved the way for Stockton's fourth touchdown. The last few minutes of the ball game were played by the reserves of both teams. Sacramento 12-Placer Union 7 The first win of the season was registered by the Dragons at the expense of the Auburn eleven. The contest was held on a sea of mud under the arc lights. It was a dull contest as the slow field held up both squads. The locals scored in the Hrst quarter after Placer got off a poor kick, and combined with a line plunge netted the Dragons six points. The second tally came as a result of a fumble and Senna a few plays went over to score. Both attempts at extra points failed. Au- burn scored late in the fourth quarter on a drive from midfield which culminated in a touchdown. Sacramento 0-Woodland 13 After a scoreless first half, the NVolves of One Hundred Twenty A FOOTBALL TEAM NYoodland started rolling in the third quarter when ,Porta blocked Lyons' punt and Nickison fell on the ball for a touchdown. Their second score was made in the last quarter when Sacra- mento fumbled on their own twenty-yard line. and XYoodland recovered. Un the next play lloloni romped into the end zone to complete the scoring. Sacramento 0-Grant Union 32 The suburbanites of Grant Union selected a new name for their football team and with that adoption they felt they should end the Dragons' superiority over them in football for a change. They went about their resolution in a serious mood as they showed no mercy and completely smothered the Dragons. The Pacers. led by Larry Burke, took advantage of every opportu- nity to make a touchdown. The Dragons put up a stubborn battle in the first half and held the l'acers to two touchdowns. ln the second half Grant Union scored three more touchdowns with Foster at the controls. The Dragons gained most of their yardage in midfield but were never inside the Grant twenty-yard line. Roof of the Dragons advanced the ball for good yardage. This game brought to a close the season for the Dragons. Baseball llli Dragon baseball team under Coach Com- batalade has won the championship for the second time in two consecutive years. :Xnd as this goes to press it has every indication of 1'e- peating its porformance in the past. This year. according to Coach Combatalade, One Hundred Twenty-one there will be three teams and with a schedule of its own, this system will enable all boys to par- ticipate in the game. .N home and home schedule has been arranged with local highs and outstanding frosh teams. XYith capable veterans returning and many mem- bers of the .Xmerican Legion squad reporting for duty the Dragons will undoubtedly have a very successful season. Basketball llli Dragon basketball schedule called for the l'urple and XYhite to meet sixteen opponents. To date the Sacramento squads have played thirteen, winning four and dropping the re- mainder. XYith only two lettermen returning for duty, Coach llrorsen had to build an entire new team. The Dragons lost the opener to a rangy Auburn squad. They next raked the lirothers College over the coals and made it two in a row over by outclassing Sequoia of Redwood City. Grant Lfnion scored an unexpected victory and follow- ing this a more experienced Stanford Frosh live scalped the locals. Roseville pulled a sleeper 'on the Sacramento boys on their home court. The lirorsenmen entered league play and dropped a contest to the l,odi Flames. The Stockton Tar- zans took a one-sided affair from the Dragons in the second league game. XYoodland barely eked out a win but the Capital City boys took the Pacers of Grant lfnion down the line to gain revenge for a previous defeat. The lialaleo l.ions of San Francisco outpointed the locals next and the tlunior College lfrosh scored a close victory over the Dragons. The llrothers College met DOUGLAS BUSBY TUNIBLING ' cleieat for the second time at the hancls of the Purple and XYhite. Those eomprising the squacl are llasieh, King, Quaclros, Nelson, Slater. lforlues, llollancl, lieonomy, Taylor and Cole.
