PAGES THE REVIEW Fable of the Paper Cover and the Design j on the Review Way down in sun-flooded Italy spreads a great marshy plain. Thereon, six short canal-linking miles from the sea, lies Ravenna-a city whose name is music- whose days reach back to antiquity. Here was the one time resort of Caesar, where gred lyvith too much battle, he wrote of his wars in memoirs which students forever ecip er. Even today this far away place, steeped in artistic traditions, its people are makers of paper. What more fitting this companionship of art and paper-making, since the one is the medium by which the other is expressed! In this necessary and world-wide union of craftsmanship and artistry was found the long sought inspiration for this new Italian cover paper for our high school year book, the Review--and hence its name of Ravenna. The design on the cover represents the artistry of the great old masters of Ravenna --Longhi, Bernardino Guarni, Matteo Ingoli. Guido Reni, Carrari Baldassase. It has been reproduced from the window of a famous old cathedral in New York City by 0. W. Jaquish, Jr. I-Iis name must be added to the list of men who began as printers but whose inherent talent led them into letter designing, type designing and later into the broad field of decorative work. Mr. Jaquish has devoted himself to decorative treatment of commercial and utili- tarian objects, giving them a surprising freshness and originality. This cover and its design represent to you a gift from the art and romance of old Italy. The book is the offering of the senior classes of the Sacramento High School. financially, and the students of the journalism department, editorially, to their fellow students. I want to take this opportunity to express thanks for the privilege of standing by and watching the students create and assemble this book. All the work, all the ideas, all the plans, all the management, is theirs. I beg to thank Mrs. Davis, Miss Moore, Mr. Broecker, Miss Patton, Miss Wasson, Mrs. Green, and Miss F inch, for reading copy, aiding in the collection of necessary funds and for the fine art work created under their supervision. And last but not least, Mr. Jensen, for his confidence and support of the journalism department in this interestini work. -MERRILL OSENBAUGH, journalism Department. EDI TOR IA L With Sacramento I-Iigh School as an inspiring theme, the Review staff of i929 has endeavored to produce a year book typical of our institution-large, picturesque. and filled with an ever changing sea of faces. To produce this effect we decided on pictures, as many and as large as possible. The Editor hopes we have been successful because when years have slightly dimmed our high school life, we will need more than words to bring it back in its full reality. With the growth of the Review, came a need for greater cooperation, and I am sure it was afforded us in generous amounts this year. I am welcoming this opportunity to express my appreciation of the work done by the alert editorial staff, and the ambitious business staff. Much of this silent gratitude also belongs to the teachers who have supervised the production of this bookg to sponsors and officers of organizations who helped in many ways: to the typing classes, and to our advertisers. --JEAN I-IAsBRoUcK, Editor.
