THE ELEE JAY 1955 Published by the Senior Class of SABETHA HIGH SCHOOL, Sabetha, Kansas e FOREWORD Co-Champions take a holiday And suddenly it's spring again, and we, the Seniors of '55, are viewing commencement with mixed emotions. If the walls of our SI1S could but speak, what precious secrets they might divulge! What memories relive! Yet memories grow dim all too soon in the hearts and minds of mortals. And so we present to you the 1955 edition of the BLUE JAY. Between the covers of this year- book we have tried to capture with words and pic- tures some of the fondest memories of these four wonderful years. Perhaps at some distant far- off time you will look upon the faces of your friends and your own face in the BLUE JAY and drift with memory back across the hills of time to relive for a moment some special day. Then it will be that the purpose of the Blue Jay Staff will have been realized. Freshmen at work 2 DEDICATION We, the seniors, dedicate the '55 Blue Jay to Miss Rhoda Robinson, a willing friend, teacher, and sponsor. May it show our appreciation for the way you helped make our high school days more rich and enjoyable. . . .for the many hours you gave up to help us with this annual or lent a helping hand and a cheering word when we were troubled. . . for the way you came through in all those uncountable instances. We wish to express our gratitude. Miss Robinson...thank you. President. Bidding farewell to SHS with the seniors of '55, are four teachers: Miss Ball, Miss Stuermer, Mr, Pollock, and Mr, Windrum. Miss Ball, who taught sociology, family living and psychology, was a member of the SHS faculty for five years. Always cheerful and ready to lend a helping hand. Miss Ball will be missed by many. She plans to enroll at KU to study physical therapy. After a brief two years at SHS, Miss Stuermer, vocal music instructor, is Calif- ornia bound. There she plans to teach elementary music. Miss Stuermer is loved by all who have worked with her and greatly appreciated by those who have seen the product of her work. Mr. Pollock, vocational ag. teacher and FFA sponsor is retiring from the teaching profession. Mr. Pollock, affectionately called Harry by his students will be remembered by all for his pride in his department and his numerous blue ribbons. Also retiring from the teaching profess- ion is Mr. Windrum. He plans to become an insurance adjustor. Acting principal for a year, Mr. Windrum also taught Economics, bookkeeping and constitution. A graduate of SHS and Neb. University, Mr. Windrum, with his sparkling personality, made immedi- ate friends with the students and will be miss- ed by those who knew him. Their responsibilities consist of not only class work but also extra- curricular activities and duties. These sometimes mean more work and worry than daily class instruction but our teachers never failed us. They were always will- ing to give a little extra advice or instruction to anyone needing it. Not until the school year s end do we realize the trials and tribulations endured by our teach- ers to prepare us for the future. We feel the loyalty and hard work of the faculty of SHS deserves all the gratitude and appreciation that can be given them. CHARLES DAY Biology.,.. Chemistry.... Algebra III.... Geometry.... Some men may say that they can do a woman's work with one hand tied behind them; but with his particular genius for de- vising time-savers, Tom Butler is positive proof of it. Tom had met and married Ann in college, when she was in medical school and he was a philosophy major who wanted to write songs. For seventeen years now, Tom has kept house and taken care of the family, while Ann practices medicine. Meantime Tom's stack of songscripts has grown higher and higher, but he hasn't succeeded in selling a single one! But Father and the vacuum-cleaner sales- man team up to produce a satisfying solution to all their problems, along with many laughs for the audience. Staying well within the budget, the jun- iors carried out the theme with roses for place cards and rose cups for the cocktail. The nut cups were cleverly decorated with silver doilies and blue half moons covered with glitter. A patio at the end of the gym was en- closed by a fence with roses entwined on it. Trellises of roses and pots of flowers in the rock walls carried out the garden scene around the gym. Blue streamers encased the gym and in the sky a large half moon and stars glittered. The program included tap dancing by Gary and Renee Miller, a pantomime act by Ronald Ahl of Peru college, a piano solo by Marvin Hinton, and a vocal solo by Gay- nall Norrie. Dance music was furnished by the Stardusters until the evening was reluct- antly brought to a close. 4 £ I MAY NINE Class Processional .. Invocation........... (Audici Wiedofts Rubato ..
