By Sprnccr W. Weisferoth PUttsburgh THIS IS NOT THE CARDINAL POINTS THIS IS THE CARDINAL COUNTER-POINTS. As students disgusted with the self-serving attitude of the students newspaper, we have taken it upon ourselves lo set the record straight. Many of the writers and producers of this issue were libeled and unjustly criticized in the most recent edition of the Cardinal Points Since the last issue of the CP was the last issue of the semester, we were unable to respond to this most vile and vicious attack. Throughout the past semester, the Student Association has attempted to produce high quality services, activities, arts, and entertainment, as well as act as a strong voice for the students of this institution in all concerns. We have lobbied for lower tuition, food costs, and dorm rates; we have fought for a voice for students in the Plattsburgh community by registering and delivering to the polk more students than ever before Do the students of PSUC know this? I doubt it highly Why? Because throughout the past semester the Cardinal Points has failed to cover the major stories, prcfenng to cover stories with little or no interest to anyone. Why did it take an entire month for accurate results of the national election lo be covered and properly reported? Because the CP thought it was more important lo report stories of such earth shattering importance as a WPLTDeeJay quitting. Who really cares? Why wasn ' t Homecoming covered? Know one really knows-especially the editors of Cardinal Pouts. But one can overlook errors of this ilk in light of the fact that Cardinal Points was run by a person who had little experience as a journalist Thomas Riedy was never an editor on any paper we know of before taking hold of Cardinal Points. And the results of his lack of credentials are painfully obvious. This is not meant to fault Riedy. He really tried to do his job. But. unfortunately, we had to pay the price for his mistakes. In the final edition of Cardinal Points, the paper attempted to summarize and grade the effectiveness of the Student Association officers. On what basis were these grades made? What was the criteria? Or was it totally arbitrary? Based on the flack ofi information available, it was arbitrary. Furthermore, the evaluations did not fauly assess the accomplish menls of the Student Association. What it did was libel at least two members, and provide an outlet to express the personal dislike by the editor of the members of the Executive Council, both past and present. This is not journalism. This is second-rate trash The students at this institution deserve, and should ask for- -demand for-a better media. The pulp which was produced throughout the semester was not worthy of being called a newspaper A paper it was. But it was not a newspaper. A newspaper contains news and infor- mation. The Cardinal Points contained neither We are pleased to present to the students of this school the sole edition of the Cardinal Counter- Points. We have no personal vendetta against the Cardinal Points, or the people who produce it- We do, though, feel an obligation to present an alternative new. In the follow- ing pages, the articles represent strong opinions on a mynad of topics, all relevant to unifying topic of the latest edition of CP. Articles on ethics, libel, misinfor- mation and frustration. Also contained are letters and cartoons. So. sit back, relax, and enjoy Mrty, Dirty Dirty irzzzsr campus • ' COMPIAINI Who- Do You think ' Pictured above is a paper published by a student at Plattsburgh State in 1975. it. too. is not the Cardinal Points. To quote, Dirty, dirty, dirty. Plattsburgh students forced to pay for trash. We have found the general attitude of Cardinal Points to be totally negative, and not al all in the inlerests of the students at PSUC. J s d nu - ■ demand a school nrwspaprr. not a lying scandal sheet! Not an advertising journal! A service for students! No more favorausm! Proper usage of our money! Cardinal Points-face the facts or remain fiction! WHAT DO VOL ' THINK! Response to S.A. attacks By Jeffrey E. Nlmerofiky In recent weeks, the Student Asso- ciation ' s newspaper has felt that effective news coverage b derived from inaccu- rately reporting news-ctearty misstating the facts and providing the students with a false sense of information Specifically, in the November 8. 1984. issue of Cardinal Points, an editorial was written condemning the actions of three very prominent members of the Student Asso- ciation government It a my honest belief that criticizing the actions of Student Association officials is most definitely an acceptable journal- istic practice However, these attacks on SA representatives must be based on lacts- not mere speculation, or an editor in chiefs personal feelings. Two days before the November 8. 1984, issue was one of the most successful days in the history of this college. As a result of the diligent work of Student Association President Spencer Weisbroth and NASI Delegate Gem Mulkem. the 1984 presidential election saw the largest student voter turnout ever on this campus. However, there was no election coverage in the student newspaper Instead, the members of the student body were led to believe that three executive council officers abused their powers. The Vice President for Activities was accused of aligning himself with the Vice President for Finances in an effort lo overturn the Senate ' s decision con- cerning a Student Association event. This was clearly not the case In an interview with Cardinal Points, the Vice President for Finances made it perfectly clear that the V P for Activities was not involved in the agreement that was reached with the Director of Campus Life. For the record, there is documented proof in the October 18, 1984. issue of Cardinal Points regard- ing the above facts. Furthermore, in an effort to maintain financial stability, the Vice President for Finances heeded to the Senate ' s re- quest. A contractual agreement was reached after many long hours of deliber- ation whereby the S.A. would not con- tinue to fund the concert. This is exactly what the Student Senate wanted. The deal (hat was worked out by the V P. for Finances and the Director of Campus Life accomplished two important things First, it followed the Senates actions, and second (of equal importance), it saved the Student Association over Jl. 200. The members of the Student Assoc- iation government acted in good faith and honestly and responsibly performed their duties. There is no reason for a few individuals to publicly humiliate stu- dent volunteers by deliberate misquotes and personal grudges This paper was entirely financed by the tireless efforts of our publisher. Russell Monaco, and Business Manager, Jeffrey Simerofsky. Ihis publication did not cost the Student Association or its members anything, except hard work. We wish to thank the following for their efforts to make this possible Don tenant, Mai Lavery and College Relations Office; Sktn Suptnski and The College A: ilutry Services; George Laymen and the College Bookstore; Robert Clinton and Marriott Greyhound. Any and all profits generated from this venture will be donated to the Cardinal Points in an effort to help off set their enourmous debt for the Fall 1 984. 76 77 80 84 91 92 93 97 99 102 f ay in the life . 1 dents in th I were eac with whic ' passage.
