Hawkins Hall symbolizes the beginning of what is now Pittsburgh State University College. From the beginning, for 103 years, the past has been a part of the future, but for now let us remember Plattsburgh as we know it — in the present. We recog- nize him for his encouragement and personal commitment to the students of Plattsburgh. Through his involve- ment in forensics, as Chair of the Com- munication Arts Department, as an educator, and most especially for his many years of never-ending contribu- tion and enthusiastic support in the production of the Cardinal Yearbook, he has demonstrated outstanding loy- alty and dedication to Plattsburgh State. 24 ALPHA PHI GAMMA RUSH m m caroinu loumge AMA MEETING Kfl 630 phi fob oo ALPHA CHI RHO RUSH m m sundowner YERABOOK RECEPTION toe ipm caroinal loungc WEEKENDS ' t Week- ends at Plattsburgh State symbolize dif- ferent things to differ- ent people. To some, it is a time to spend relaxing with friends. To others, it is a chance to try new and exciting things. Late night parties followed by late morning brunches, Saturdays spent cheering the red and white, and Sundays spent trying to accomplish the ever dreaded homework. All of these things are events we have experienced. 25 26 s 4 irffrf XV m Tl TE STUDENT ASSOCIATION PRESENTS HOMECOMING ' 83 28 Saturday, October 15th dawned a chilly day for Homecom- ing ' 83. During the previous week, festivities included the Coro- nation and crowning of Ted Sofianos and Sue Coughlin as King and Queen. All dorms had been busy stuffing chicken wire and the creative floats of the parade were the result. Defredenburgh Hall took first place overall and Hood Hall took first place for dorms. Saturday afternoon brought an alumni luncheon and a soccer game between Plattsburgh and SUNY Potsdam, with Plattsburgh gaining a victory, 1 to 0. The celebrations culminat- ed Saturday night with the semi-formal held in the field house. Stairway to the Stars was the theme of the dance and was attended by the AKEBA King and Queen, Russell Banks and Juanita Wooten. 29 30 31 HALLOWEEN ' 83 September 30, 1983 On Friday, Sept. 30, David Byrne took the PSUC Fieldhouse stage to perform a solo version of Psycho Killer. This was ju st the start of an incredible concert by Talking Heads. One by one, the other band members joined Byrne on stage. They went on to play a twenty-one song set which included some of their older songs like Cities , Love Goes and Build- ing on Fire , as well as new songs like Making Flippy Floppy and the top ten hit, Burning Down the House from their album, Speaking in Tongues. The crowd of more than 3800 people danced and cheered throughout the concert, which was brought to Plattsburgh by David Brickman and the Concert Committee. 35 STRAY CATS . . Due to the efforts of the Concert Commit- tee, under the direction of David Brickman, on February 3, the Stray Cats played to a crowd of 2,500 people at the PSUC Field House. Lead singer Brian Setzer danced around the stage all night. Drummer Slim Phantom played from atop, and in front of his drums, letting up only to take a few sips of Jack Daniels. Lee Rocker occasionally stood on his bass while playing a strong bass line. A group of five singers, calling themselves, Fourteen Karat Soul preceeded the Stray Cats, their doo-wop style and harmonizing complimenting the Cats ' 50 ' s sound. For their encore, the Stray Cats played Oh Boy as a tribute to Buddy Holly on the anniversa- ry of his death. . . . FEBRUARY 3, 1984 37 Rock This Town 38 Kelley Rodgers Ron Darian Winter Weekend ' 84 was kicked off on Fri- day, February 10th, by the second installment of Let ' s Dance , called Let ' s Laugh . Through the efforts of the Activities Coordination Board, under the direction of Sam Drury, three come- dians were brought to Plattsburgh State. Kelley Rodgers, Ron Darian and Bob Friedhoffer, all up and coming stars from the same agency, brought laughs and good times to all in attendance Bob Friedhoffer 39 On Saturday, February 11th, the Winter Weekend semi-formal was held in the ballroom and the upper floor of the College Center. Love is in the Air was the theme that set the mood for this special occasion. Romantic couples danced to the upbeat music that filled the air. It was a great prelude to Valentine ' s Day, which was just around the corner. A Typical Weekend . . . It isn ' t easy to define a typical weekend at Pittsburgh State. Each of us has our own ideas. However, there are some things that we all do ... For instance, getting up in the morning (or in some cases — the afternoon) for brunch. It ' s on Saturday and Sunday mornings that we go without our showers and trudge into the dining halls, in our sweats. It ' s a tradition and not the only one! What about the ever so popular naps during the afternoon or the midnight munchies? Another favor- ite pasttime during the weekend is just plain lounging out and talking with friends. It ' s on those days that you often wonder where the day went and why your homework didn ' t finish itself. The last, and defi- nitely not the least important aspect of the weekend, is the nightlife. Long, late nights are spent dancing at parties, drinking downtown or hitting off campus and floor parties. After a long week of classes, we all enjoy the time during the weekend to do whatever our heart desires, each in our different yet similar ways. 42 . . .At Plattsburgh State 43 44 SKIING ' 83- ' 84 45 ad - her bonus i enough r overs fall 6 floors and die locked in passionate embrace Please let me kill? Wheth- er they are dorms, apart- ments or houses, these are the places we can relax and be our- selves. We take with us the memories of those with whom we shared our life styles. ADIRONDACK 57 58 65 66 67 OFF CAMPU ' 68 72 73 INTERFRAT The continuous harmonic relationship enjoyed between the various fraternal organizations would not be possible without the hard work of a dedi- cated group of individuals — lnterfrat. Interfrat is composed of members of each fraternity and soror- ity on campus, and is responsible for all activities which involve more than one Greek organization. Charity drives are a major community function of the many Greek organizations, and of Interfrat. The continuous exchange of ideas and informa- tion, which strengthens all the Greeks through In- terfrat, helps to maintain a strong relationship be- tween all Greeks and the campus at large. Greeks are very proud of their individuality, and Interfrat supports and strengthens this by using this as a common bond for the greater good of all. CANDIDS 79 ALPHA PHI GAMMA (GAMMAS) Since the Fall of 1981 when Alpha Phi Gamma was established our soror- ity has risen to a proud number of 41 sisters. Recognized as the girls in gar- net and gray who carry teddy bears , we stand by the meaning of our soror- ity — The Beginning of Friendship . We are a very close knit organization who have a strong common bond of sisterhood yet each sister strives to maintain her individuality and unique- ness in hopes to better the sorority and the Plattsburgh State campus as a whole. On campus and in the community we are well known for our Blood Drives. March of Dimes Walkathons, and fundraisers for local charities. In our first fully established year we were proud to be the recipients of the Scholastic Cup. This year we have captured The President ' s Cup the highest award at Plattsburgh State, in honor and recognition of community and campus services. Alpha Phi Gamma has grown a great deal in a short time and will con- tinue to grow through the strength and bonding of our sisterhood. 80 ALPHA CHI RHO (CROWS) AXP The Sigma Tau Phi chapter of the National Fraternity of Alpha Chi Rho received its national charter in 1981. Our name has traditionally been asso- ciated with campus and community in- volvement, outstanding parties at our house, which is located at 142 Brin- kerhoff Street and intramural excel- lence. During the past years, we have or- ganized and participated in campus and charity fundraisers which netted over $15,000. These services in pre- vious years had led us to win the President ' s cup. This year we were presented with 1st. place along with Theta Alpha Lambda sorority, for hav- ing the best float at this year ' s home- coming weekend. Our membership is open to any male student attending Plattsburgh State. Once inside the doors of our house, you ' ll feel the enthusiasm that all the brothers of Alpha Chi Rho pos- sess. BAA Pride in our accomplishments, in who we are and in where we ' re going is just one facet of the emotions held by the Thalians. We are a group of girls who through our community pro- jects, scholastic achievements, campus activities and social functions have much to be proud of, too! Theta Alpha Lambda sorority is a blend of unique individuals, each with their own ideas of love, loyalty and unity. They bring these ideas together and through cooperation and much hard work help to establish a definition of sisterhood. Active participants in the campus Homecoming the Thalians were co-re- cipients of the first place award for floats in the Greek Division and proud- ly received the Scholastic Award for highest overall cum. Being in the com- munity is a major part of sorority af- fairs. To date we have worked for the American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, CVPH Blood Drives and given time to numerous homes for the aged. Continuing to grow in numbers the Thalians are always ready to open their hearts to new members. Always striving to maintain our ideas of friend- ship and loyalty we are sincere in our belief that Thalian girls are the best. THETA ALPHA LAMBDA (THALIANS) ■ 82 THETA KAPPA BETA (BETAS) 8KB The Theta Kappa Beta Fraternity started in 1959, founded by a group of Korean War Veterans. Since then it has grown and decreased in number but never once did it slacken it ' s own respect for its ideals. It strives for love between its individual members, honor amongst other organizations on cam- pus, and a faith in God that its love will perpetuate the organization. The BETAS have been actively in- volved in college community services, including Bi-Annual Blood Drive, Plattsburgh Earth Day (P.R.I. D.E.) The United Way, The Heart Fund, The Cancer Society, and the Community Hospital and County Nursing Home Services. With our ever growing Brotherhood, the Beta ' s have been able to establish a scholarship for its brothers, as well as contributing to the college founda- tion in an effort to help those students who are in need. But most importantly, the BETAS are BROTHERS. And with our strength in our brotherhood, we will continue to grow in the future and to help our college community neighbors, and most importantly to help each other. 83 ALPHA KAPPA PHI AKO (AGO ' S) Alpha Kappa Phi holds indi- vidualism as one of the most im- portant aspects of sorority. As distinct personalities, we feel that by combining the various talents and interests of many, we can emerge as an effective con- structive force. With every new sister wel- comed into Ago, a totally new experience happens for the indi- vidual and the group. There are many friendships, happiness and even some disappointments in- volved in the sorority but each adventure is a learning experi- ence 84 PI ALPHA NU (PINEAPPLES) IIAN Pi Alpha Nu is the oldest fra- ternity at Plattsburgh State, es- tablished in the fall of 1957. Pi Alpha Nu is a high spirited fraternity that stands up for its ideals. Our fraternity ' s aims are to promise high standards of scholarship, character and fel- lowship. This brotherhood main- tains these aims through its so- cial activities and services. Our pledging centers around a sharing of ideas between brothers and prospective broth- ers. We don ' t try to make one conform to our ideas, we use ones individuality to better our- selves. 85 AA6 Alpha Delta Theta has been a vital organization at Plattsburgh State for 58 years. During this time we have been actively in- volved in community projects as well as those here on campus. Among these are an annual fund drive for the Heart Fund and visiting various homes and hos- pitals during the holiday season. Being an Alpha Delta means expanding horizons. It begins with pledging a -.:me of self dis- covery and continues through the years with increased social and civic awareness. Our ideals of sisterhood bond us to each other through good times and bad. Individuality, Unity, Re- spect. ALPHA DELTA THETA (AD ' S) a 86 PSI EPSILON CHI (PSI EP) V PEX Psi Epsilon Chi, founded in 1968 is the only Greek organiza- tion at Plattsburgh State to own its own house. Our house, locat- ed across from MacDonough Hall, is well known for its base- ment and warm weather porch parties. We are a community ac- tion organization, always looking to help out the Cancer Society or other such groups. We encourage any men inter- ested in Psi Ep to come find out what we are all about. 87 PHI KAPPA CHI DKX (CLIOS) 88 SIGMA PI (SIG PI) in Phi Delta Omega, Plattsburgh State ' s newest Greek organization, was formed in the Spring of 1983 with the intention of becoming a national fraternity. In the Fall of 1983 Phi Delta Omega became a colony of Sigma Pi, the fastest growing and currently the four- teenth largest fraternity in the na- tion. Now, with the moral support and financial backing of eighty thousand Sigma Pi brothers an even stronger brotherhood has been formed. Now we can, and will, aid Plattsburgh State and its surrounding community with fund raisers, entertaining activities, and with ideas that are working in 140 other colleges around the nation. Though becoming a strong and stable organization is a goal focus, we deeply believe in the privacy and freedom of the individual. To- gether, each individual member will contribute to the ongoing suc- cess of the S igma Pi brotherhood. 89 91 i zociotion ■ ANIZATIQ NS IXXOCIO i 3 J 4r s- 93 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL TOP LEFT: Sue Coughlin (V P. (Points Photo by an Admiring Photographer) Cardinal Points, the student paper at PSUC, underwent a major edito- rial shakeup prompted by the resignation of the three top editors. Janet Healy, Spencer Weisbroth and Tom Edmonds left at the end of the Fall semester to pursue other career interests, leaving openings for the positions of Editor in Chief, Managing Editor and Features Editor, respectively. Healy left for an internship at the local paper, the Press Republican, and from there will graduate into the career world. Weisbroth left the paper to pursue a career in politics, as Executive Vice-President of the Student Senate, a seat for which he ran unop- posed. Edmonds left for a semester in England, where he will continue as Cardinal Points ' first foreign correspondent. Following elections held last week, Jeff Cochran takes over the posi- tion of Editor in Chief. He was formerly the Photography Editor. Karen Ulrich takes over in the number two editorial position. Former- ly the Layout Editor, Ulrich sees the change as a career move . The rest of the Cardinal Point ' s staff — Bobby VonGoeben as Editor for the Arts; Carey Avenia as Business Manager; Annette Valenti as General Manager; Joe LoTemplio as Sports Editor; Scott Florence as Ad Sales Manager with Tammy Astor as the new Co-Manager; Kim Mar- chino as Typesetter; Sandy, Sherri, Mike, Bob, Zina and all the others will continue to produce the weekly campus news, and expand on a tradition of quality. 112 113 CARDINAL YEARBOOK STAFF Carri Nelson EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Tony Armlin PRODUCTION MANAGER Jeff Cochran PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR Marlee Margopoulos TREASURER WEEKENDS EDITOR GOODTIMES — Dave Gossin. In conference play, the Cards were 2-3 and one of those wins were against nationally ranked Binghamton State. Dom Szambowski, Donovan Scott, and Rick Damore earned All-SUNYAC honors. Driving through the dark I write poems. Last night 1 drove through a stop sign, pondering line breaks. When I explained the policeman nodded. then he gave me a ticket. Someone who knows told me writers have fifteen years: then comes repetition. even madness. Like Midas, I guess everything we touch turns to a poem — when the spell is on. But think of the poet after that touching the trees he ' s always touched, but this time nothing happens. Picture him rushing from trunk to trunk, bruising his hands on the rough bark. Only five years left. Sometimes I bury my poems in the garden. saving them for the cold days ahead. One way or another you burn for it. Linda Pasten — Poet 13 Oct. After the show he lies on his bed and stares at the walls. There his heroes are captured in their best moves. The music moves him to a rain forest of lights and viney cords where wall-of-sound warriors walk with cymbal scarred ears. He leaps from the bed and restarts the primal ballet, hands punching through air. He is a magic man now, weaving spell and tale for the awestruck tribe. The spell ends, and the mime is left with his silence. Greg Cook Bill Crosby - Center for Art, Music, Theater From the Fields Below I cannot say what robin answered me, but there was one last-twilight, dark-descending one that spoke across the hawthorns ' fading flowers, the dying white of shadblow disky-falling. I heard that murmur of the robin ' s talk, last words that spoke, past the hawthorn white, beyond the shrubby dogwood ' s lingering brightness — brief words out of swelling fragrant pause before the day became the utter night. I cannot say which bird, but I am sure he sought to reach me with language more than birds ' — for he had seen me pass and knew my speech was such as love addresses to mate and child; and so, recalling, he spoke a fragment to me — love ' s half-conscious hope and desperate denial of that recurring inconceivable death of day. George Abbe Bill Robbins - Center for Art, Music, Theater 156 A TIME REVISITED by Itha Lee Reed Two grain elevators towered over the river, their tops reaching up toward the flat blue sky dotted with white cotton clouds. The scene was reflected perfectly on the river ' s motionless surface. On the opposite bank, newly laid railroad track glistened in the warm yellow light. Beyond that was a farm house, and gently rolling patchwork fields. A tractor stood idle near a fence, and fat black and white cows contentedly sniffed the clover. Far away a low rumbling sound interrupted the silence. It grew louder and louder until around the bend in the river, almost out of sight, a wisp of black smoke smudged the blue sky. The noise and the acrid tasting smoke both increased and soon a train came into view. It charged forward like a prehistoric monster along the newly laid track. The initials B. O. were painted on the side of the engine, and the words Baltimore and Ohio on the freight cars. The ground shook and the clear surface of the river became a mass of jagged ripples. The once benign looking reflections became disjointed fin- gers, reaching unsuccessfully for the noisy train which roared by leaving black smoke in its wake. Soon it was out of sight; and in a little while the smoke had disappeared too. All was silent and peaceful again. Is that what it was like when you ran the steam trains, Grandpa? Tommy asked. Grandfather wasn ' t listening. He watched the train until it disap- peared around a bend. Then he took a gold watch out of his black uniform pocket, brought it up to his thick wire framed glasses, checked the time, smiled, and pushed his conductor ' s cap back over his white hair. The B. O. ' s on time, like always, rain or shine, she ' s always on time, he muttered, happily shak- ing his head as the miniature train chugged to a stop in front of the cardboard station. Through the snow cornered pane I see everything I ' ve ever missed Piling up - undone And slowly melting - unachievable Thoughts are falling Indecision, indifference And I watch myself Piling up in a melting mound Suffering in the life-long sun Until a mercifully cruel winter wind Blows away snow and soul And the flakes lie quietly Like scattered ashes. Megeen R. Mulholland The Lost Memory A pink, faded nightgown worn sofl as goose-down, with reinforced underarms and ancient, hidden charms, keeps a young girl warm. In the back, a small hole unwillingly grows— fearful of rejection, of becoming tiresome, and no longer worn. The front springs open at the slightest touch; the slots for buttons were used too much by a girl-grandma. Its softness is comforting— absently reminding of the girl who warmed the nightgown for a girl she never knew. Erena L. Fulton I had died earlier in the week — a tragic, needless death. And I had been walk- ing for a time on a dingy cloud, with bare patches re- vealing the earth below, small and spinning like a child ' s blue marble. Now I set down my bags. 1 had reached Heaven, according to the sign. The high cement wall extended in both direc- tions and out of sight. Over the barred gate a red neon sign blared the name of the place. Still I wasn ' t sure . . . I approached the lone fi- gure beneath the gate, a grizzled man in a tattered Macintosh, huddled over a pale fire in a 50-gallon drum. He looked like a cou- ple of wire hangers jammed crazily into an overcoat. Excuse me, I said. This is Heaven, isn ' t it? He remarked me indiff- erently, and drew a paper bag from his inside pocket. Yep, he said, this is it all right. Want a jolt? Keeps back the cold. . . . God, no, thank you, I said, hefting my suitcases. But if you ' ll be kind enough to open the gate; I ' ve had a tragic death, and a tiresome walk getting here; I ' m sure you understand. He drank again, and passed his sleeve across his chin. Gate opening ain ' t my department, and I understand about the walk. The walk ' s longer for some than others. But the ' tra- gic death ' part just don ' t sit right with me. I just don ' t see what you mean by ' tragic ' . . . . I ' m a writer, I said. It was instinctive. 1 mean, I was a writer. Unpublished for five years, almost one short story per week, or two weeks. It was said that my time was just about come. ' A great unrealized talent, ' they called me. What ' s so tragic about that? he asked. I ' m twenty-two, I said, growing impatient. My work was never read by anyone. After twenty-two years — twenty-two tragedy-free years — I ' m a corpse, a ci- pher, a memory. . . . I ' ll never realize my full potential now. It ' s a shame. Yeah, sure, he said. A tragic death ain ' t nothing. Try living a tragic life. Poor from birth, belly always empty, then when my parents died I worked as a migrant to support my two little bro- thers. Along about then drinking crept up behind me and I lost what family I had. 1 suffered until the day I died. A broken body and soul at sixty-two. Truth is, friend, you had it easy. And truth is I don ' t see what you had to write about if things were so goddamned good. . . . I ' m bein ' honest with you. He turned a milky eye on me, and offered the bot- tle again. This time I knocked it back, whiskey, fire in my throat but some- how reassuring. The fire in the drum grew faint, and he stripped the bag from the bottle and added it to the flames. I opened my suit- case, the smaller one, and took out the stack of fol- ders containing my finished manuscripts, and shook each and every one into the fire. . . . Funny thing, he said, wiggling his fingertips in the glow. You never become a good writer until you ' re dead and gone. He paused. Here, finish this off. I took the bottle and drained it. I hadn ' t thought about it that way. The flames licked the edge of the drum, and the warmth of the fire penetrated the chill that had already begun to creep into my bones. carl nielsen Jeff Cochran CHAMPLAIN TRIO Z-PLATT READING 168 - ACULTY STAFF 2G v° a, 3 3s (y. . y 169 NURSING L. Mr. Fox Holden was appointed the principal of this new educational institu- tion in 1890 where he remained until 1892. Dr. Edward N. Jones succeeded Holden in 1892. During Jones ' administration a new wing was added to the southern side of the Normal School building as well as the introduction of a Kindergarten class to the school ' s curriculum. Dr. George K. Hawkins suceeded Dr. Jones in 1898. Two years after Dr. Hawkins became principal, the Normal school became a teacher ' s training school. Tragedy occured when the Normal School burned down during Dr. Hawkins term as principal. Due to the fire, classes were moved, in 1929, to the Plattsburgh City Hall until the new one-million dollar building was finished in 1932. Dr. Ward became principal after Dr. Hawkins retired in 1933. During Dr. Ward ' s administration, the school went through its larg- est expansion. Such events occured as the changing of the Normal School to the State Teachers College at Plattsburgh, the establish- ment of a four year economics class, the election of Dr. Ward to the presidency of the New York State Teachers Association, Twin Val- leys being purchased for the college and the building of McDonough Hall. After the death of Dr. Ward in 1952, Dr. Redcay was appointed to the position of acting president. In 1954, yet another president was named, this time the job went to Dr. Angell. During this period, a five year plan was incorporated for more expansion. Plans included a $700,000.00 budget for new dormitories and the expansion of Rugar Street to allow for more space. The Normal School was renamed Hawkins Hall and the economics building became known as Ward Hall. In 1974, Dr. Joseph Burke became the president of Plattsburgh State University College, a position he still holds today. During his administration, he has overseen the construction and dedication of the Benjamin J. Feinberg library. From 1899 through the present, educational opportunities have grown immensely. Plattsburgh has grown in size, not just physically, but in faculty, students and academic and social areas. Following is a view of where Plattsburgh has come from and where it is going . . . 235 236 What is presently the State University College at Plattsburgh began in 1889 as the Plattsburgh State Teachers Training School. This two- year institution, more properly known as the Normal School , func- tioned for the sole purpose of educating people to teach. The school was located in this building, located on the same site as the present day Hawkins Hall. In January 1929 a tragic fire completely gutted the building, however the school continued to function at other facilities in the city of Plattsburgh. This continued until in September 1934 when a new building, the present day Hawkins Hall was opened and classes resumed on the actual school campus. Although a college is really defined more by its student body, faculty, and staff, rather than its actual facilities and structures, the old and new Hawkins Hall have been the center of college activity and moreover the hallmark of the college. These buildings saw Platts- burgh change and develop from a small teachers school to a large state university college and functioned as a central and integral part of that past. Hawkins Hall will continue that tradition and go on as a part of Plattsburgh ' s bright future. 239 240 The Graduating Class of 1933 The Graduating Class of 1983 What we know as Plattsburgh State University Col- lege is and has been many things to us — a place of learning, a place to grow, a place to discover yourself and the others around you. These are the things that we all share — those who experienced the Plattsburgh of the past, we who experience Plattsburgh of the present, and those who will experience Plattsburgh in the future. Ret- rospect is a quick glance back at Pittsburgh ' s past so we can better understand what Plattsburgh has become to- day, just as this yearbook will someday be your glance back to your past so that you may remember what Plattsburgh was to you and hopefully how it changed a part of you.
