Feinberg LIBRARY The New Benjamin F. Feinberg Library, which had been under construction for over three years was finally opened June 27, 1977. The architec- ture of the building, which compliments its sur- roundings, was designed by Mitchell Giurgola, of N.Y.C. The library consist of three floors, which enables it to accomdate more students and more material for their use. 16 Power Tower 70 21 22 23 Miner Center Miner Center is a fully equipped satellite campus located 15 miles north of Pittsburgh near Chazy on the spacious es- tate of the William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute. The campus contains classrooms, laboratories, library, and faculty offices and residential and cafeteria facilities for 50 students and staff. It is the site of Man and Environment, a 15-credit, one-semester program in Environmental Science coopertively developed and fun- ded by the College ' s Institute for Man and Environment and the Miner Institute. V 24 26 26 Twin Valleys Twin Valleys, an outdoor education facility for Pittsburgh State, is located thirty-eight miles south of the main campus in the Adirondack woodlands. It is a 700-acre tract with brooks, meadows, and a three-acre pond. Twin Valleys is used throughout the year for such activities as tobogganing, snowshoeing. hiking, camping, campfire programs, swimming, boating, and in- formal sports programs. It is a unique experience offering one the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and to see nature at its fullest. It gives one the chance to see and ap- preciate how beautiful America really is. •• v. ; 5 - . 29 3? ill Lijrn The Right of the Cardinal A Day in the Life . . . tea® 36 • r k The morning ' s sun rises slowly over Phttsburgh. but not nearly as slowly as the students rise. The day ' s work looms menacing before us Monday through Friday and getting out of bed means starting it all off. Getting up leads to classes, after classes it ' s studying, and studying means midterms, finals, and quizzes in between. Well, you can ' t stay in bed all day, but maybe just ten minutes more .... Whoever said getting there is half the fun? If you don ' t have your boots up here, you ' ll feel like a cowboy without his horse. But just like the mail, on we go to classes - through rain and sleet and piles of snow, to sit in class an hour or so. Then pick yourself up and move on to the next place to sit around some more. It ' s no wonder why the days seem to run in together and all be the same. Why can ' t it be Friday? 38 It ' s Monday, four days a week as we go through the cycle again. Keep working or drown in the rising flood of assign- ments. Not everybody makes it through four years and lately it ' s been getting tougher. Larger classes, higher academic require- ments, and increasing work loads make you ask yourself, will it all be worth it? What happens after graduation? 40 .1? 43 There is one good thing you can say about classes; it makes dinnertime look so much better. (Better than what?) Just think of the things you can talk about with your friends: God, this looks awful. Didn ' t we have this yesterday? Well, look at the bright side, you can always trust the salad bar if you can ' t guess what else you re eating. 44 You gotta eat, so get in line. Take your pick: you can wait in the snack bar, at the Stage, or in Clinton dining hall. Just like classes, you get used to it. Seconds, thirds, and before you know it you ' re on a diet. And guess what comes after dinner? 46 Here we go again, back to your room for studying: readin ' writin ' and rithmetic. That ' s if you can get down to work - otherwise a few hours of just sitting around can ' t hurt all that much. Wait a minute? Is that all we do here? If it weren ' t for the work, Plattsburgh would be great? So what makes it worth stay- ing here? Monday ' s over and T.G.I. F. 48 When the weekend finally makes the scene, the college pop ulation shifts. Where to? downtown! For a short weekend we come alive and stuff our books under the bed or in the closet. The end of the week changes attitudes as we get a break from the Mondays. People are happier and the smiles come easier, too. The only thing better than Friday is Saturday. Miller opened the Spr- ing Weekend music festival. It was a sunny Saturday morning for the annual Arts and Crafts Fair, as well as the campus wide picnic featuring Ent and the Screaming Boarder Boys . On Sunday afternoon there was a bluegrass concert featuring The Blend and Silver Chicken . Later that evening the College Chorale, under the direction of Dr. R. It wasn ' t much of a balmy southern day, but at 10 a.m. the floats started rolling through the city on their way to the foot- ball field and the Homecoming Day Game. It took all night Friday to com- plete the floats for the competition. The winning float, Show Boat , left, won both first place overall as well as Greek division. Kent Hall won first place in the 146 147 The Cardinals put up the best fight they could, but in the end we needed more than we had. The award ceremony highlighted half- time as Pres. Burke awarded his trophies to this years winning organizations. The Psi Eps and Thalians shared both first place Greek division and best float overall, with Kent Hall winning the dorm competition. The DK ' s and Psi Ep ' s won a Scholastic cup each, and for the fourth year in a row, the brothers of Psi Epsilon Chi achieved the honor of win ning the Presidents Cup. 149 150 Winter Weekend Life and Times ofthe60 ' s Winter Weekend 78 started with a Talent show in Hawkins Hall Auditorium. The weekend schedule in- cluded a Friday night beer blast at The Pub , Satur- day afternoon sporting events and a Saturday evening semi-formal dance. Unable to please all people and organizations all the rime, Cardinal Points has fluc- tuated in scope and design for many years. This year however, Cardianl Points has thrown off the yoke of financial oppression and has achieved a level of excellence hitherto unknown. All aspects of the newspaper, both quality and size have increased dramatically, to such a degree that Cardinal Points is rated as one of the best newspapers put out by SUNY colleges. Cardinal Points has won numerous awards from inside and outside of the college. A new Arts section has won much acclaim. Staff size has increased and advertising has been leaned upon to maintain the momentum (Cardinal Points allocation from the Student Association was one of the lowest in history this year). Cardinal Points owes a great deal to many people. Tom Robetham and Norm Radow have served with the paper for most of their college years and, coupled with their successors. Phil Karig and Jay McGrath, have elevated Cardinal Points to the award winning publication that it is. Cardinal Points has given me a lot. said retiring editor Tom Robotham. I just hope that my contributions have been of some benefit. Norm Radow, the retiring Managing Editor, left with a sense of accomplishment, but had many reservations. I ' ve left a lot un- done but I have tremendous confidence in Phil Karig as Editor, and have assured expectations for Jay McGrath. said Radow. Tom and Norm see the newspaper rearing independence. Many college newspapers are going independent. With the adver- tising base here and a dedicated staff. 1 can see independence in five years, maybe less. said Radow. Newly appointed Editor-in-Chief, Phil Karig, illustrated the point this way: Anytime you have to criticize the people, you are responsible for the conflicts that will develop. Though the newspaper has come under criticism from many sources, Tom Robotham finds it ironic that the Student Associa tion. which espouses a liberal and youthful philosophy, has tried more to squash the paper rather than the administration. But the fact is, said Robotham, that these attempts at censorship have been few and far between, and we ' ve met and won most of our battles. Cardinal Points will submit this year, a proposal calling for a three-fold increase in its budget. Presently Cardinal Points receives eleven thousand dollars from the Student Association, a miniscule amount for the service rendered. The one-hundred page proposal will call for a newspaper with a minimum of twenty-eight pages, and with a weekly Arts section and increased circulation. Both the outgoing Editorial Board, and the incoming Editorial Board see anything less than acceptance of this budget as a rubber stamp for independence. It was as if we had been invaded or time had regressed, and people from the past were reborn. The reason for these strange and unusual happen- ings of the night — it was Halloween weekend. Every where con- tests for the best costumes were being held. We were visited by the like of Dracula, Snow White, the Pizza Man. and the cast from the Wizard of Oz. There was a costume for every profession one could think of. from policeman to hookers. There were many scary, serious, and funny costumes. All in all everyone around campus seemed to have a good time. i 207 Christmas 1977 Around campus Christmas parties were fan- tastic successes. Santas never made it because they were passed out in different places. The elves were scurryinq about and some people seemed to stray from their friends and ended up underneath the mistletoe. Christmas trees no matter how Charlie Brownish they were gleamed and were admired by many. At the end of the night all the work that had gone into the parties seemed so well worth it. Some proof that the parties were big successes was the fact that most people stayed long after the alcohol was gone, possibly a Pittsburgh first. 208 209 . The organizations commonly referred to as the Greeks, lend other dimensions to the Pittsburgh campus. Besides partaking in campus activities such as being chairmen of various committees for Homecoming, Spring and Winter Weekends, as well as having the honor of being members of weekends court, holding positions on executive councils in the Student Government and donating their free time to work at the book swap, and polling booths the Greeks of PSUC do countless amounts of volunteer work in the com- munity raising thousand upon thousands of dollars per year. During the past year the Agos and the Psi Ep ' s have volunteered their time for the March of Dimes radiothon at WIRY as well as dressing up as characters from Sesame Street for the Pumpkin Patch at the Pyramid Mall. The Clio s have organized the campus wide United Way campaign: the Ago ' s sold carnations at the Arts and Crafts Fair, the Psi Ep ' s sponsored a talent show. The Clio ' s also do volunteer work at CVPH. The AD ' s and Psi Ep ' s helped the community launch the annual Heart Fund Campaign. Denise Vicarella is 1978 ' s Queen of Hearts. The Sisters of Alpha Delta Theta have always been hard working volunteers for this worthwhile cause. The Thalians have been involved with the Big Buddy program. Among the Greeks who have been recognized for their efforts are the brothers of Psi Epsilon Chi — they presently hold the American Cancer Society Award for the single organization in northern New York State which has raised the most money to benefit cancer research; they hold the overall float trophy along with the Thalians for their prize winning entry The Show Boat . The brothers of Delta Kappa Delta are involved with the organization of Winter Weekend as well as various athletics for the campus. This year they won the Scholastic Cup Award for the highest cummulative average among the frater- nities. The Sig Tail ' s are infamous for their twenty four hour long parties and campus blow outs. The Ago ' s volunteer their time every Sunday night and do USO babysitting, they work with the Association for Children With Learning Disabilities by putting together learning kits, tutoring and fund raising. They ' ve initiated Project Child Find in the Plattsburgh area as well as giving time to the Salva- tion Army. The Pi Alpha Nu brothers have initiated a telethon for the educational t.v. station on campus, a door to door drive for the Salvation Army, as well as an annual fund raising drive for leukemia. Some Greek organizations go Christmas carrolling at the hospital while others volunteer their time and still others dress up at Halloween time and visit the pediatrics ward. Other sorority and fraternity members enter the M.S. dance marathon; organize and take part in various worthy causes; the walk-a-thon for March of Dimes. Bike-a-thon for cancer, monthly blood drives for the CVPH blood bank and long hours spent at the Health and Well Fair at the Pyramid Mall. The Greeks welcome you to visit them anytime. Come to a rush — where you are able to become acquainted with the brothers and sisters — or to a fraternity house where you can receive answers to any questions you might have. Psi Epsilon Chi Psi Ep ' s Psi Epsilon Chi. founded in 1968. has something to offer everyone. For the com- munity, we promote the Bike-a-thon for Cancer and Blood Drives for CVPH among other things. For the campus, we have opened our doors of our house on 72 Broad Street for Annual St. Patricks Day parties and periodic TGIF parties, parties which are open to anyone who considers himself herself a friend of Psi Ep. And for our brothers, we offer loyality friendship, athletic teams and a feeling of satisfaction, knowing that in your years at Plattsburgh you have done something for yourself and for the people around you. 222 AK$ Alpha Kappa Phi Ago ' s Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority, more com- monly known as Ago, has existed since 1892. when it was a literary organization on campus. In more recent years; Ago has as its aims the establishment of coopera- tion and a feeling of sisterhood among the members; the contribution of activities and services to the college; and the encourage- ment of new ideas and interests among the members for the improvement of the organization. These aims are fulfilled and implemented by a variety of activities which take place each semester — such as U.S.O. babysitting, and working with A.C.L.D., just to name a few. Delta Kappa Delta AKA DK ' s Delta Kappa Delta is a fraternal organiza- tion which strives to promote among its members the qualities of scholarship, fellowship, and leadership. Wisely active in intramural and intercollegiate sports, DK has maintained a tradition of excellence in these fields since its reactivation in 1953 (the oldest fraternity on campus). Our membership is open to all male students attending PSUC. The fraternity also offers opportunities for action in community af- fairs and other community-related ac- tivities. Also, the brothers of DK participate and enjoy the most active social life available to anyone on or off campus. 224 Phi Kappa Chi Clio ' s The Clionian Sorority was established 102 years ago as a literary society. As the sisterhood developed, it based its goals on community service and loyality to the group. This semester we are working for the United Way. The sorority has actively lived up to these goals today by working for many weekends, rushes and other sorority formal functions. The Clio ' s are known to many as daisies, girls in yellow and the Phi Kappa Chi ' s. The sorority welcomes any girl on campus to join with the intention of serving the community and the campus. Sigma Tau Sigma Sig Tau ' s The objectives of Sigma Tau Sigma frater- nity are to bring together those male stu- dents of diversified backgrounds, having corresponding interests and common am- bitions to provide a fraternity through which intellectual, social and charitable ac- tivities will have a beneficial effect upon the lives of the brothers of the fraternities members, the college and the community. The Sig Tau ' s house is located at 147 Brinkerhoff Street. 226 9AA Theta Alpha Lambda Thalian ' s Theta Alpha Lambda Sorority is a women ' s organization at PSUC. It strives to provide opportunities for each member to grow as an individual socially, emotionally and academically. In addition to rushing, pledging and frat parties. Pi Alpha Nu is a fraternity organization where you can do your own thing and form long-term friendships. 228 AA0 Alpha Delta Theta AD ' s Alpha Delta Thcta Sorority is a group of women on this campus that believes in the spirit of sisterhood. It is our goal to obtain the scholastic and social ideals of college life, such as working to raise money for the Heart Fund. You can find our lavender and white sweatshirts downtown, at parties and on campus. 229 Theta Kappa Beta 6KB Beta ' s Our fraternities started in 1959, founded by a group of Korean war veterans. Since then it has grown and decreased in num- ber, but never once did it slacken its own respect for its ideal. It strives for love bet- ween its individual members, honor amongst other organizations on campus and a faith in God that its love will per- petuate the organization. Currently the fraternity participates in all athletic events offered, provides the campus with many social events and lends support to many community activities. 230 232 233 Soccer This year ' s soccer team was off to a good start early in the season defeating N.C.C. 12 0, and Clinton Community 4-0. Despite many injuries at mid-season, the Cardinals lost four games by only one goal. By the end of the season Coach Nick Goddard had most of his team back in full force ready to face the number five team in the state, Oneonta. Oneonta was lucky to win 3-2 as the Cardinals played their best game of the season. Next year ' s team is looking good, but unfortunately, the team will lose three seniors this year. The opener at Marist College ended in a 14-14 tie. In the second game of the season the cardinals out- classed a strong Middlebury B squad with a 28-0 shutout. Travel- ing to Brockport State the team lost a well played game in the rain and mud 0-7. At this point in the season an unusual number of serious injuries crippled the car- dinals as several starters were for- ced to sit out the remainder of the season. The result was successive losses to R.P.I. , St. Lawrence Un- iversity. Mass Maritime, Norwich University, and Albany State. The last four losses coming against teams that were the best in the east in Division III. The final game of the season was an outstanding effort by the cardinals against Albany State, a team that went on to the Division III playoffs. Leading the cardinals was freshman quarterback Jeff Budka, who passed for 1015 yards and a 43% passing average. 242 244 245 Women ' s Volleyball Everything was new for the women ' s volleyball team this year. The coaches S. Baum and D. West, had a real learning experience working with the team. They worked hard but had fun too and are looking forward to next year ' s season. This young, but skillful team did a good job in their first season ending with a 7-7 record. The PSUC Women ' s Tennis Team had a ruff and rainy start losing to Potsdam (twice), Middlebury. and St. Lawrence, with three cancellations, St. Michael ' s. Albany St. and Siena. However the girls showed much improvement toward the end of the season by defeating Caselton and Hudson Valley. We were fortunate to send four team mem- bers to the New York State tournament, and our doubles team won in the cancellations. We are looking forward to a more experienced squad and better season next year. 249 252 253 Women ' s Swimming PSUC had an impressive year, beating Middlebury. Albany State, St. Michaels, Russell Sage (twice), McGill University, Skid- more, New Paltz, and Buffalo State. This fine women ' s team lost only three times, to St. Lawrence, Middlebury, and to the University of Vermont. The 9 wins 3 loses record, is the mark of an outstanding season. Doug Stewart, Frank Collins, Keith Kuril, Mark Yatarola. Dave Robertson (Coach). 258 259 Men ' s Basketball The 1977-78 Cardinal basketball season has proved to be a year of ups-and-downs. The Cards began with a torrid pace of 5 wins in a row including a first place finish in the Berkshire Classic over host North Adams State of Massachusetts, but then fell victim to two powerhouse divi- sion II schools (Bridgeport and Hartwick) just before the holiday semester break. Coming Back in January it looked as if the Cards could regain their title as S.U.N.YAC. champs that was theirs two years ago, But due to the loss of personnel and some cold offense the Cards sputtered. An overtime lost to Oneonta State at home the Cards had their first bad break, but then later that same week an even bigger blow came. With a 0-7 record the Cards were at Cortland State and won 4948 in the last twenty seconds, but a wildly thrown elbow ended a career that may never be forgotten. Larry Parker was lost with a fractured cheek bone. His season ended and gone were his 17.9 points a game and 15 rebounds, but most of all his leadership. The Cards rallied behind letter- men Mike Green. Darryl Hutson and Tony Petroni to win their next two games over Powerhouse St. Lawrence and Castleton St., before falling victims to the flu and Albany State which eliminated them from post season play. Coach: Ben Nelson Trainer: Doc Powers Managers: Kirk Eskild, Ed Barber, Tony Higgins Statisticians: Marge Dugan 261 262 263 Ice Hockey At Pittsburgh State, winter is the season of bounc- ing balls, sharply slapped pucks, boisterous crowds . . . and butterflies. Coach Louis Frigon ' s hockey team has captured the spotlight of those boisterous crowds with a hockey team that at mid-February was atop the ECAC division II West with a 15-2 overall mark, the New York State Collegiate Hockey Association with an 11-1 record and the State University of New York Athletic Con- ference with an unblemished 8-0 slate. At the first of the season. Frigon ' s hockey team represented an 80 percent turnover in personnel from a year ago. That was topped with the inexperience of the club as an ECACII contender — joining the ranks in fall, 1976. However, the Cardinals demonstrated that their lack of experience in the ECAC leagues would not deter from the talent of their young club. The Cardinal front line of Teddy Dash, Matt Wescott and Danny Brown demonstrated their high scoring ability in the first contest with an 18-2 whipping of brockport State. That contest followed with a disap- pointing 6-5 loss to Army at West Point. From that point, the Cards went on a hockey tear that witnessed them build a ten game winning streak over such notable clubs as the University of Buffalo, Geneseo State. Norwich University and Hamilton College. The Cardinals did not stop that relentless pace until January 28. with a loss at Elmira College that set the 264 Plattsburgh State record at 10-2. Two weeks later, before a record crowd of 3,100 at the Field House, the Cardinals avenged their Elmira loss with a 64 win over the Golden Eagles that gave Plattsburgh State sole possession of first place in the ECAC with a 14-2 mark. The Cardinals took sole possession of the SUNYAC and New York Hockey conferences with a 5-2 win over Oswego State on February 18 at Oswego. That win came despite a flu and injury bug which depleted the team to just 12 healthy players who made the trip. The win assured the Cardinals either the number one or two seed and a home ice advantage for the March ECAC playoff. Danny Brown, a transfer from Clinton A T, has proved to be the stalwart player on this year ' s success team. The junior from Richmond, Ontario has con- sistently led the ECAC in scoring with an average of almost four points a game. Teddy Dash and Matt Wescott have complimented Brown ' s play — each chipping in enough points to stay among the division leading scorers. The hockey team ' s success has been the major sports story on the PSUC campus in 1978 as they ' ve captured the hearts of student hockey fans as well as the entire community. Chuck Kefler Coach Louis Frigon. 268 Women ' s Basketball With the addition of some height and some new faces the Cardinal Women ' s Varsity Basketball Team have turned things around this season. Af- ter a disappointing season last year. Coach Sturm has made some changes such as incorporating the running game along with using the height of six foot freshman Meg Durfee and five-eleven senior Mary Jo Hartmayer. Joining Meg and Mary Jo up front are, senior Susan Speeches, junior Mary Schreck and freshman Darlene Lint. In the back court for the Cards is the outstanding guard Linda Case along with junior Melody Kalinkewics, sophomo re Karen Martini, and freshman Denise O ' Connor. The women ' s schedule this year in- cludes Albany State, St. Lawrence University, Lyndon State, Johnson State, U.V.M., Potsdam, Buffalo State and Norwich. Even though there are three freshmen on this year ' s squad, the team will lose four key players, Case, Hartmayer, Speeches and Kalinkewics at the end of this season. Their duties consist of prevention of injuries, immediate first aid for those that are injured and treatment and rehabilita- tion procedures as directed by their advisor or the Team Physician. Their skills vary from taking care of cuts and abra- sions, to making pads, taping, etc. The student trainer is well versed in emergency procedures. It is the trainer ' s duty to carry out any orders given by the team physician and to keep the coach informed of the athlete ' s physical condition. Henri 199 277 In Memoriam Over Christmas vacation, John Byrnes left us. Mind you it ' s cer- tainly not like him to desert anyone; if anyone needed anything, anytime Bymsie was there. There ' s no doubt in my mind he wishes he could be here now to tell us all everything will be alright. Yes, Bymsie has left us, but what he left with us is a lesson in how to live. He lived a life of constant giving and caring. He touched many lives with his contagious enthusiasm and tender compas sion. I could write nearly endless lists of his accomplishments and sacrifices for others yet what is more important is that we have grown and will continue to grow because of our having known him. Yes, Bymsie has left us and we shall all miss him terribly but in a far greater way, he will always be with us and we shall never stop loving him.
