HOWARD DORFMAN, Assistant Vice-President for Personnel Affairs, has been here for nine years. Currently his job includes overseeing, organizing, and setting policies pertinent to the operation of personnel throughout the entire Medi- cal Center. He acts for the President of Personnel in areas of faculty personnel policy and with the Board of Trustees. In addition, his responsibilities include administration of the Records Office and the Office of Machine Services. He is married and the father of two. HELEN KOVACS, Director of Li- braries, was bom in Hungary, and studied in four foreign countries and in the United States. At Downstate since 1957, she be- came Head Librarian in 1961. Fluent in many lan ages, she is much in demand as an autildr and lecturer both here and abroad. She has worked endlessly toward the creation of the newly merged library fofticially-the Medical Research Library of Brooklynl, now third largest in the United States. This library, now com- puterized, will be the first of its kind in which a computer may be queried using general medical terms. Though over- whelmingly busy, she is a wife and mother, and enjoys painting and garden- ing. ROBERT L. RENCK, Assistant Vice- President for Facilities and Planning, has been at Downstate since 1949. A mech- anical engineer, his major areas of re- sponsibility include heating, air con- ditioning, maintenance, safety, security, and, most important, co ordination of the entire building program. To date, suc- cesses include completion of the Univer- sity Hospital, Residence Halls, and the Parking Garage. Currently underway is the new Recreation Facilities Building, to provide for all student activities, includ- ing: swimming, gym, music, organiza- tions, snack bar, and even a nursery play- ground. DIRECTORS AND ASSISTANT VICE- PRESIDENTS MILTON MILLER, Assistant Vice-President and Director of Business Affairs, has several re- sponsibilities, including: prepara- tion of all budgets for the State Legislature, supervision of all purchasing Cincluding the recent equipping of the new University Hospital, a mammoth jobj, Ac- counting and Payroll, all Hospi- tal business affairs fincluding Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Crossj, and administration of all student funds and aid. At Down- state for 17 years, he tries hard to find a little time to enjoy his family Cincluding several grand- childrenj. 'Tl DR. EDWARD W. MOLDOWSKI joined the staff at Downstate in 1963 as Director of Student Affairs, and was the first to hold this position. A psychologist with wide experience, his challenge was to meet with and advise all students on a personal basis. Though he feels the Center's environment is stimulating, he wishes the communication between ad- ministration and student would improve, and devotes much of his time and energy toward this goal. I EVELYN GOODWIN, Assistant to the President and Director of Public Rela- tions, is a woman of tireless energy carry- ing many responsibilities. In addition to working very closely with the President, she edits all school publications fthe bul- letins, The Reporter, Briefs, etc.J. In addition, she supervises special events at Downstate, handles press, radio, and television releases, publicizes lectures, conferences, tours, and obtains faculty lecturers for outside groups. Though we don't often see her, we constantly beneiit from her fine work.

uw n Qjjflliliflg il Q1 en affiliated hospitals, located throughout the borough of Brooklyn and near-by Long Island, have provided a rich and rewarding variety of clinical experience for Third and Fourth Year students at Downstate. At these institutions, the student was given the opportunity of observing and participating ir1 the practice of medicine as it is carried out in large voluntary, municipal, state, and federal hospitals. Our associations with these outlying hospitals have provided us with a broad cross-section of patient populations and clinical entities from which to leam, on a scale not possible at any single institution. Many of tl1e staff of these hospitals serve on the Faculty at Downstate, and, along with other attendings and house staff, have been enthusiastic and ambitious in iilling their preceptorial assign- ments. Experience gained at these hospitals will serve to mould us into better physicians in the future. The LONG ISLAND COLLEGE HOSPITAL, circa 1860: origin of Downstate. The LONG ISLAND COLLEGE HOSPITAL is the original medical school hospital in Brook- lyn. A voluntary general hospital with 567 beds, it is utilized for regular and elective instruction in the major clinical subjects. We extend a special thanks to the staff here, for each hard-working member did his best to provide us with the learning we sought. Every day was a new experi- ence, and we gained by doing as well as by seeing. We will remember these men, not only as excellent physicians, but also as outstanding teachers.
