GERRY PAUL F. EATON 86 ROBERT L. BISHOP LAURA E. TREYZ ROSWELL SANFORD ARTHUR DEGROAT 87 DR. WILLIAM R. KUNSELA President 88 To the Class of 1972: You are a member of our 55th graduating class. When you leave you will be joining more than 60 00 alumni who have gone before you. When Delhi College was established in 1913 it was one of the early pioneers in the community and junior college movement. We are now one of 1500 similar institutions in the United States who enroll more than one-half of the nation’s college freshmen. In contrast with our sister institutions Delhi is mature, well developed, and endowed with magnificient resources. Yet, we share the same excitement experienced by the new community colleges which are being established across the land at the rate of one a week. By being at Delhi you have been a part of a relatively new kind of education which has swept the country like wildfire. By being at Delhi you have experienced a new life style in education where tradition has not stood in the way of innovation. I think we can all take pride in being one of the finest two-year col¬ leges in the nation. Your class, which expects to graduate more than 800 students, is the largest in the history of the College. In fact, in 1972 we will graduate more students than we did in the first two decades of our existence. While numbers are not important, Delhi’s output reflects State University’s determination to meet the unparalleled demand for higher education in the State of New York. Given the resources, State University can help man’s dream for universal higher education to become a real¬ ity in the next decade. In spite of the shrinking labor market we can take great pride in the tre- menduous demand we have experienced for the competencies, skills, and capac¬ ities you have acquired. Our nation will always need the expertise you possess as a technician or skilled craftsman. We also take great pride in the demand we have had for those of you who plan to co ntinue your education. As you join the ranks of Delhi alumni, we wish you the best of luck. We hope that you will return to your alma mater so that we may share your successes and learn from you how we might do a better job of preparing Delhi’s students “to be¬ come all they are capable of being.” MR. WILLIAM F. KENNAUGH Vice-President 90 To the Class of 1972: One of the privileges accruing to those who live in a free society is the opportu¬ nity to make one’s own life decisions. As mature young adults, you have now reached one of those important milestones that measure your progress through life. You have arrived at a point where critical decisions must be made with re¬ spect to a future that seems to stretch endlessly in time. Your formal education in the last few years has been directed primarily to assisting you to develop those in¬ tellectual processes and accumulate that knowledge which will enable you to make decisions that are intelligent and satisfying. Your decisions in such areas as career, further higher education, marriage, fami¬ ly and ultimate goals will mold your life as nothing in the past has ever done. In addition, they will also help to mold the society in which you and your classmates will live. For these reasons, much careful thought and sincere soul-searching should be the order of the day in reaching your decisions. Without such care and diligence, much of what you have already achieved will be without value. For many of you, the net result of your decisions will be a satisfying and suc¬ cessful life. For a few it will mean preeminence, while some will fall by the ways¬ ide. Be that as it may, the very fact that what you achieve is the result of a free man functioning in a free society is worthy of note. I feel certain that it is the hope of this college community that you will accept not only the privilege but also the responsibility of wise decision-making so that you and your generation may be¬ come all they are capable of being. Yarnes Instructor 215 The Students of Delhi Agricultural and Technical College recognize the Valley Farm Complex for its outstanding agricultural and vocational leadership to both the college and the Delhi Community. The main barn of the million dollar complex houses the dairy herd, which has for the past five years led the state in production for an under fifty cows herd on D.H.I.R. records, and a group of horses for the equine science students. The barn is a modern, fully equipped practice area for all those in all agricultural options to gain practical experience. It also serves the community by making its resources available for use on 4-H projects. The dairy herd of Registered Holsteins supplies the campus with milk, selling what is not required for campus use. The beef barn has been converted into a completely modern auto mechanics shop in which students and townspeople may bring their automobiles for repair for a slight service and parts charge. The third building is now the home of the masons and electricians, who, in a concentrated one year program learn the tools of their trade and leave Delhi to serve effectively and efficiently in their respective fields. 216 217 218 219 MEMORIES 221 While preparing the 1972 FIDELITAS, I was aware of constant cries of student apathy coming from the various student lea ders and concerned students. A look at the active staff of the yearbook only tends to strengthen these cries. This years book was prepared by two constantly active people, myself and Ann Unkenholz, to who I owe a great deal. There were also various other people in¬ volved who helped from time to time. Of course there were the students who were always willing to offer suggestions and criticisms but would never take an active part. To the active students on campus, I apologize for the books lateness. As we progress through life there will always be the one who stands to one side and says, “someone else will do it,” and he will be right. Don’t let this person be you. The future of our lives rests in our hands, all of us, not just a few. If everyone steps in and makes just a small contribution toward the development of the future, I feel confident that the problems of the world will be solved for the good of all mankind. To the freshmen, you have seen the fruits of noninvolvement time and time again. It is my sincere hope that in your senior year at Delhi, you will make your voices heard through the various student organizations and governing bodies open to you. Only through involvement in the affairs of ones environment may one “become all he is capable of being.” Sincerely yours, Thomas Ridgway, Editor in Chief
