HOWARD HAAS l TOLD YOU SO ELL, well, so this is Le Salon d'Andrew that I've heard so much about! You say all the smart New York women come here? By the way, who's proprietor here? Not really the Andrew Vuyosevich we used to know? Well, girls, here's where your star reporter gets the low-down on all the debs and dowagers and a lot of gossip. Psst! is that Bette Chambers over there having a pedicure? Do you know she's just finished a full page ad for the Sailor's Rest , on the Passaic waterfront? lt's run by June l Ma i Robertson and Betty Admiral. And look, in the next booth Ledy Harmarr! Why, she's the outstanding night club chanteuse or something -now if you girls and boys won't breathe a word to a soul-she was Jose- phine Alesci-and she can dance too, thanks to those Hungarian impres- arios, Artur Clementi and Alicia Bockmanya. Those two can teach anybody to dance, but they're having their troubles with Jay Northrup. Do you see that girl under the dryer? No, no, over there-it's Miss Barbara Hodges, she's the leader of Cafe Society here in New York-being prettied up for a benefit ball for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Snakes in the Grass. Say! what's that headline on the paper you're reading- Kirchmann Khemical Korporation destroyed by explosion believed to have been caused by head chemist, Bill Hartmann? Speaking of science, have you tried the sunlamp invented by Lester Kress--it's guaranteed not to cause freckles-some boon to humanity. Did you know Theodore Ernst, Q.R., D.P., A.J., l.Q., etc. has disproved the theory of valence. According to Ernst, all he learned under Prof. J. J. Kirkendall was wrong! Let me see that movie magazine. Hm, Hollywood tips-Gloria Larsen is to play Scarlett O'Hara in the revival of Gone with the Wind . Rita Shapiro has been chosen for her stand-in. And think of it! Donald l'Allol Grant has finally captured the coveted role of Rhett Butler. Now if you can keep a secret-Lois Frankland has just returned to Hollywood as a lan- guorous blonde with a Swedish accent lGarbo will never be missedl. Listen to this-Paul Jones has been hired by Stupendous Studios to replace Ned Sparks. By the way, did you hear that Fred Owens passed out at the Paro- mount, not from the heat, mind you, but from one of Walt Rooney's jokes. Look over there! Do you recognize her? lt's Jean Garcia, the present Brenda Frazier. She's reading the sports page. Speaking of sports, did you know that Ed Antolini has been hired by the U. S. S. R. to coach the girl's soccer team. Walt Schneider, former athlete who is president of Schneider, Schneider, and Sons, manufacturers of Red Swiss Cheese, is returning to his home in Holland. Have you ever seen a polo game? l saw one last night. The Pussy Willow Quartet consisting of Virginia Bradley, Marie Ca- valcante, Marie Dermody, and Elvira Er ienger defeated the Daffodils- Grace Frey, Harriet Geerling, Elaine Hassel, and Janet Hugo in the Women's Polo Tournament. l'm going to see my first prize fight next Thursday. Doris DeGreen is fighting Madame Zaza . Twenty-nine Well, you culture fiends, in terpsichorean fields Marian Bringman, Marian Austen, and Stell Moroney-famed jitterbugs have taught the King of Siam the Pineapple . As for radio-John Leigh has just celebrated his umpteenth anniversary as tobacco auctioneer on the program sponsored by El Reeko-the cigar with the bite. Remember Don Keiran? He's the new Dean of the Static Institute. Say, what do you think of that title they've given Mickey McGarry? Mother of the Air. Humph. I happen to know that her husband has written every single thing on bringing up children that she ever broadcast! All the night owls are looking forward to the opening of Casa Bandana run by Bob Yereance--he's going to pack them in with the aid of three hundred beautiful girls. You'd better put this on your reading list: Boyds: A Study of East Side Birds. I saw June Jewels last night-have any of you seen it? Well, I declare every show Benner and Bookstaver produce is better than the last. And Dan Graves! You should see him! Why, a show simply couldn't fail with him in it! They say Vin Barry is wildly jealous of him. Why shouldn't he be? If Graves goes out to Hollywood, everyone knows that M. J. M. won't renew Barry's contract .... While I remember it-how about getting up a little party to go out dancing? Bill Crane and his Crippling Rhythm is at the Swank Room. Oh dear, I nearly forgot-there's a dinner tonight that certainly will be boring -Arthur Nelsen, president of the Presidents' Club has arranged to have David Robbits, professor of Latin, Greek, and Phoenician languages, to speak. Now draw up your chairs real close and listen carefully. I've been getting around town quite a bit lately, and I've heard plenty, believe me! You know Bob Lawshe? Of course, you do, but don't interrupt-well, he was left waiting at the church by Barbara Hannah-she's eloped with Roy Kucks, bon vivante and man-about-town. And guess who blew into the big town on the Hudson yesterday? Mr. Janeba, the benevolent multi-millionaire, whom just oodles of people call Pop . He was accompanied as usual by his secretary Marie Giannone. Now there was something else-oh, yes, George Crane is posing as editor of Better H-omes and Gardens . Even he admits his only gardening experience has been cutting grass. Oh, my dear, are you going to hear Robert Donnan, Esq? He is going to lecture at Town Hall. His theme is How to Talk Your Way through High School or Blow Hard and Graduate in Three Years . Now just a minute more, and my nails will be dry-cute shade of polish, isn't it? You want to hear more? Here goes-Gloria Marcus-yes, the Gloria Marcus, is running a popular pawn shop and Vera Zoubek is running the library-ragged. I saw in the paper yesterday that Howard Meuche, chief of the G-Men, promises to capture sweety Stroehl within twentye four hours. I certainly hope he does-that Straehl is a wicked man. Betsy Young and Jeannette O'Connor are running a day nursery for the orphans of gangsters and people who were lost in the Christmas rush. Well, don't I look beautiful now? That M. Andrews is a genius. So long, girls, see you at bridge next week, and remember to listen to the Lone Ranger. Now ebon night walks o'er the land, Scattering stars with careless hand 'Til one scarce can tell in the winter night Which is a star and which a light. -J EAN ARFMANN ON THE ADVENT OF SUMMER l sing a song of praise to thee, O Summer, when in nightly spree The crickets chirp without cessation. O happy season of flowers fair, O long hot days with sultry air, And-O what's best of all-vacation LIGHTNING Jagged, lt gleamed For one second- A huge bolt of blinding power. A moment, lt reigned, Invincible. From cloud to peak It shook the heavens in fury, Then vanished forever. -J AMES CHENOWETH O MY CHOSEN FEW My special likes are hard to name But here l'lI try to list A certain few that come to mind, But loads l've doubtless missed. A firm warm hand-shake leads them all A friend's bright, smiling face, A twinkling eye, a bubbling laugh, 0 A scarf of rich old lace, A A Or one of rustling taffeta, A quilt that's stuffed with down. mellowed pipe's aroma, sweet, slippery satin gown, 'Most any shade of stately blue, A softly-cushioned chair, A neat appearance, witty jokes, Soft, glistening, curly hair. Silly trinkets please me too, Pins, bracelets, bows, and such, Shiny metals, sweet perfumes, White hankies, crisp to touch. These things l've named l like the best, Of course, there are more too, But if I tried to list them all l never would be through. -BETTY WARNKE -BARBARA GREEN Fifty-eight ROLLER COASTER At first deceiving, gentle motion, Suddenly, Zooming, plunging, rocketing, Rough wind and flapping hair, Shrill screams and piercing cries. Finally, Longed-for quiet and the vow, Never again! THE CYCLE A glow in the east, Red ridges in the sky- Down. Birds singing their matins ln the soft countryside, Men rushing to and fro ln the rough city's tide- A glow in the west, Red ridges in the sky- Sunset. -PEGGY SAENZ O TH U N DERSTORM Roaring, crashing, Tearing its way Across the earth, Leaving, -BETTY CHAMBERS O AUGUST AFTERNOON A heavy drone beats on thick air As a toiling bee reels by. The silent, stifling heat weighs down And the drooping flowers sigh. A ROSE See the toll lady! lsn't she lovely? Red velvet bonnet and princess-like air Softly her green gown sways, Light with the breeze she plays, In its woke' Never did I see a lady so fair. Coolness, sweetness, silence. -LOIS CAMPBELL -MARJORIE GETTMAN ty-nine THE SENTINEL LONELY GHOSTS Watching brovely, Look- The lone candle guards the musty hall, The street lights... And here a shadow hastily lifts its ' Th I ,k I I h tattered skirt, ey 9 eom I e one Y 9 CSIS AS Q mouse swf,-ies by. Wrapped in cloaks of falling snow. -ARTHUR WARD -LOIS RODENBURG 0 ODE TO A FORGOTTEN CITY Under the heavy, worried sea Which calls no land its home And hurtles all with spumy glee Beneath its hungry foam, Past slimy monsters which lurk in caves On the ocean's fathomless floor Where murky waters swirl o'er graves Of things which will creep no more, Tangled in ribbons of sea-weed, Half-buried in shifting sand, Seen dimly 'mid sentries of coral, The walls of a city stand. Forgotten, unsung, they are passive, In silence accepting their fate. Though the ocean that sways them is massive, The peace they enfold is as great. In the quiet of years unending Through a soft light of green you can see The desolate, delicate ruins As they sway with the drifting sea. A wave ripples slowly o'er them And the ruins no longer stand. The walls have changed into pebbles And the pebbles have changed into sand. Its beautiful buildings have fallen, Each one is a single grain. Lo! the city has vanished And time is the victor again. -JAMES CHENOWETH Sixty .-A fy. I N EX K Nb An.AN-sHlMAN, Inc. NEWARK, N. J.
