Yes, R.H.S. has been good to us, It has sheltered us, disciplined us, educated us, and prepared us for a world beyond the steel lockers and chalk boards. As we, the class of ’69, prepare to leave, we may feel some regret, for, as in the words of Victor Herbert, ‘‘Once you pass its borders, you can ne’er return again,’’ No matter how often we visit, we’ll never again be a part of the changing classes, the school buses, the lunchroom lines, the games, or the happiness. The ’69 OWL has tried to capture some of our senior year in pictures. If the annual staff has succeeded in returning the memories to you, then all our hard work has been rewarded. The OWL is proudly presented as a permanent reminder of the class of ’69, EXPRESSING irae. MR. T. W. W. Evans. . . . OUR APPRECIATION Mr. Evans teaches Latin and English; he also sponsors extra- curricular activities, one of which is the demanding task of coaching our debate team, In this series of snapshots we find him in a typical session with his team, First, Mr. Evans explains some of the finer points of skilled de- bating. A member of the debate team gets some individual instruction. In the next frame Mr. Evans listens and takes notes as his team debates the question, Finally, Mr. Evans gives his criti- cal analysis of their debate. It appears that the team and their coach are pleased with the pro- gress they are making. Beas00 33 CLASS FLOWER - Yellow Rose CLASS COLORS - Yellow and White SENIOR CLASS HISTORY September, 1964, opened up a new life for us. We were finally in high school, Rustburg High School. We looked around us at the new and smiling faces. These would be our fellow classmates for five most important years of our lives. The sponsors for the eighth grade were Mr. Hodges, Mrs. Wilson, Mr. Evans. At our first class meeting, we elected Bill Carwile, President; Dana Burnette, Vice-President; Faye Threatt, Secretary; Dennis Windsor, Treasurer; and Reny Knight, Reporter and Historian. One year had gone by and we, as freshmen, were developing interest in the extracurricular activities around the school. Our sponsors were Mrs. Gallier, Mrs. Hackworth, Mrs. Wells, and Mr. Wingfield. The officers selected were Sue Triplett, President; Tod Blankenship, Vice- President; Glenn Dawson, Secretary; Bruce Stauffer, Treasurer; and Jimmy Litchford, Reporter. Football season marked the beginning of our Sophomore year. Members of our class were participating in sports as well as cheerleading. This was a sense of. belonging at last. Our sponsors were Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Gregory, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. Fletcher. The class officers were Tod Blankenship, President; Glenn Dawson, Vice-President; Jessie Cyrus, Secretary; Rita Almond, Treasurer; and Wayne Staton, our Historian and Reporter. Our Junior year had finally arrived. All thoughts were centered on studies and college boards. But all was not work - remember the Senior Prom, Class Night, and the parties after- wards? We ordered class rings and our senior portraits were taken in the spring. We were almost at the top of the ladder. Our sponsors for the junior year were Miss Bragassa, Mrs. Hicks, Mr. Styles, and Mr. Dictor. The officers were Tod Blankenship, President; Hugh Rowland, Vice-President; Bonny Tabor, Secretary; Dwight Inge, Treasurer; Casey Carden, Reporter; and Peggy Carwile, Historian. And then it came - a victorious football team and the beginning of our last year, our most important year, with ninety-six seniors. HOMI ACTI Homecoming began as golden fingers of the bonfire's flame reaching skyward some- how radiated their warmth into the spirits of the Rustburg student body. The students encircled the fire, as their rippling re- flections, the lapping tongues of flame, and the cries for the death of Staunton River permeated the student body as surely as did the ironic touch of the hot flames and cold night air. The coronation, the epitome of Home- coming, occurred the next day as Mr. Brewer placed a silver crown on Miss Rita Almond's head. That afternoon the parade made its way down the Main street of Rust- burg. Its floats reflected the ingenuity of club members as well as their ability to push tissue paper into chicken wire. At least they put Dennis in his place. 42 The newest style in Paris. PRR gen OMING IES That night in frigid weather the foot- ball team played an inspired game. At halftime the floats encircled the field and the strains of Pomp and Circumstance Queen for a Day! floated through the night air. The Home- coming Queen and her court found the air somewhat chilly at midfield. However, the Red Devils returned red hot from a lecture by Red Devil - Coach Styles and defeated Staunton River 19 to 7. Then there was the dance. The sounds of the Expressions, the strobe lights, and the nearness of someone special made this last phase of Homecoming unforgettabie. JV.S IN ACTION The Rustburg Junior Varsity began summer practice with a sense of hope, but prospects for a successful season were dim due to lack of experience. However, all predictions that foretold a poor season were blasted by strong team effort. The first year boys proved them- selves worthy of Coach Wade's praise while leading the team to an undefeated season. The only team to seriously threaten the Baby Devils was Appoxattox, who came to within four points only to be stopped by the Rustburg De- fense. This was the first undefeated team in the sports history of R.H.S. This made them eligible to send a dele- gation to the annual F.T.A. convention which was held at Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, in December.
