Vincent wasn't a lunatic, McTavish says. He did some odd things, but he was intelligent and well read. We were finishing up a tour of an Edward Albee play, and looking for a two-man play to do. so we wrote a play based on van Gogh’s letters and called it Letters From The Yellow Chair, which is the title of one of Vincent's better known paintings. Pace says, making it sound very simple. Apparently, it was a job well done. Letters From The Yellow Chair became the first play ever presented at the National Gallery in London, and played to sell-out crowds throughout England It is starting a three-month tour in this country with a performance at the Birmingham Museum of Art at 7 p.m Thursday The next stop is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where it will play for two weeks, before heading across country to California, stopping at major museums all along the way. McTavish and Pace admit to a fondness for American audiences. There were a great many Americans on vacation in London who came to see the play in July when we were doing it at the National Gallery, McTavish says. They show their enthusiasm, they let you know they are enjoying your performance. Which is wonderful. Pace adds. Especially with a story like this. McTavish continues There are not a lot of laughs in it The play opens with Theo. played by Pace, returning from Vincent's funerai The various episodes in his brother's life that he remembers are based on facts drawn from the letters they exchanged. LOS ANGELES - It's not easy to imagine actor Pat Morita in the role of a police lieutenant named ‘OHARA. In the first place, most people seeing the name OHARA would think first that someone had forgotten to include the apostrophe after the 0. And secondly, that a person with a name like that would be Irish - not Japanese, as Morita unmistakably is. Also, that the role of a kindly Japanese gardener or karate instructor - as Morita portrayed in previous film appearances - would be more suitable for the first generation Nisei” “OHARA is the new ABC one-hour drama about a veteran police lieutenant in a big-city police department who blends a unique combination of shrewdness and compassion to accomplish his objectives as a cop. Heart of the City, formerly scheduled in this time slot by ABC, had its last airing last night Asked here at the Century Plaza Hotel what sets Ohara s character apart from his contemporaries, Morita said it’s his manner and his compassion He is a practitioner of a Zen philosophy that helps him understand and empathize with others. This allows him to focus his concentration on a single subject block out and slow down the outside world, and tend to the matter at hand, said the actor. “He's able to extol peace and control in a world of frenzy and turmoil. he added.
