The entire object of true education is to make people .... 1974 . . . as you look back, what will you remember? For a refresher, do you remember Homecoming, the gas shor- tage, after school jobs, snow days, flooded locker rooms? Or do you remember the general feeling, the at- mosphere-do you remember the SPIRIT? In 1974, Ruskin's spirit saw a dramatic increase by students, faculty, and administration alike. Everyone was willing to get involved in a personal way. Not all people could shake pompons at football games, sink the basket that made the difference between winning and losing, or write the editorials for the Hi-Light. SOME had to be the Pep Club behind the cheerleaders, the manager of the basketball team, and the typists of the editorials. But everyone freely gave his part toward making a total Ruskin. Unfortunately, spirit in America as a whole was on the decline-thus, Watergate, impeachment, resignation, poverty, war, recession. Perhaps a little hope was renew- ed by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian journalist, when he said, . . . I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble . . . Our neighbors have faced it alone . . . They will come out of this with their flag high . . . Returning to the school aspect, Ruskin was more or less like other middle-class, suburban high schools. But the basic difference was that spirit didnTt affect Ruskin, Ruskin WAS spirit. So, this book-dedicated to present the SPIRIT of 1974.
