F- M f D . RN J RUSKIN HIGH SCHOOL SPIRIT '74 IS . . So much has been said throughout the year by so many about The Spirit of Ruskin and Ruskin's new spirit that the Mirage staff felt that one entire sec- tion of this book should be dedicated, fittingly, to the people who make Ruskin High School what it is today-the spirit people. But first, what is school spirit? Spirit is the feeling of pride that comes from saying I go to Ruskin . Whether you're a cheerleader, a Chess-Club member, or just a typical guy who smokes in the john, if you like your school and are proud to say you go there-you've got spirit. lt's a feeling that grows as you do and increases with your years at R.H.S.

Ruskin spirit is the pride you feel when attending the Ruskin- Hickman basketball game and the entire gym stands for the Alma Mater or the Ruskin Fight Song, lt's being able to say, We have the best drama department in the state. lt's the enjoyment of walking down the glass hallway or sitting in the courtyard on an 800 May afternoon. lt's watching all the teachers stand at the back of the gym and sing Mathilda because that could never happen anywhere but at Ruskin. lt's Mark Bishop and Martin Merritt acting like a train in the cafeteria or Les Terry pushing Clay Trillin in a painted wheel-chair because it gave peo- ple a few laughs and made being at Ruskin a little more fun. Spirit is the courage of 150 Ruskin seniors taking the time and effort to donate blood so that others can live. lt's the unspoken devotion of Mr. Burkhart staying after school five consecutive nights until 9:30 p.m. to help plan Project Youth . Ruskin spirit is walking through the hallways 3rd hour and listening-to the silence-of 1400 kids growing up.
