Counsellor: The purpose of the department is to assist students in making educational and vocational choices and in dealing with personal problems. M: What do you think of our Guidance Department? The department includes 12 courses, 10 units. Some of these courses include typing, vocational, clerical, bookkeeping, business law and math, and two new courses, personal typing and record keeping. The department head, Mr. Wrisinger, volunteered a little more data. Mirage: How many years have you taught at Ruskin, Mr. Wrisinger? Mr. Wrisinger: Since 1948, which is 24 years. l started teaching at Grandview when I was 21. M: Can you tell me more about the new courses such as personal typing and record keeping? Mrs. Skinner prepares for another timing. 22 Mr. W.: Each of the courses is a one-semester course worth Z unit. Personal is mainly for the college-bound student who needs only the basics. Personal typing teaches correct letter form, and concentrates on control rather than speed. Record keeping advances the student to double-entry bookkeeping. M: Are the contests very important to the department? Mr. W.: We participate at State and District contest. There are ten events-typing l, ll, lllp Speed and production, Shorthand I, ll, Bookkeeping I, ll and the Business Knowledge on which almost anything can be found. District and State contest are held in March and April. In May the Civil Service Test is given to seniors wishing to enter the clerical field through the government.
