'ilk Administration Building HiSf07j1 gf Ruskin High School Ruskin High School District, or Consolidated District No . 1, jackson County, Mis- souri, was originally composed of four districts: Holmes Park, Hickman Mills, Rock- ford, and Union Point. 0 Under a state law of 1901, the leading citizens of these four districts met to consi- der uniting the districts . In the later part of 1901, the citizens voted to consolidate the districts, a site was selected and a bond was voted to build a schoolhouse . ln the fall of 1902, school opened in the first consolidated district in the state of Missouri. The high school, with an enrollment of thirty-three, was situated in Hickman Mills and by the county superintendent was named Ruskin in honor of the English author . At first Ruskin had only one room and offered only a three-year course . AnAssistant tea- cher was hired in 1904, and a third teacher was added in 1908 when another room was added and a four-year course established. In 1931, a building facing Blue Ridge was completed, housing ten regular class rooms . In 1950, an annex for the industrial arts, music, and acafeteria was completed . ln 1952, a building boom brought hundreds of new students to the school district. In 1955, a new building consisting of 18 regular class rooms, a cafeteria and a library was built to ac- commodate the increased enrollment. A four room annex and a gymnasium-auditorium were added in 1956. A All Ruskin's buildings were demolished by the tornado on May 20, 1957. The fol- lowing school year Burke Elementary School served as a temporary high school while the new Ruskin was being constructed . The new building, two-stories high and 698 feet long, was ready to use in September 1958. Twenty-two class rooms, a library, a ca- feteria, and a gymnasium-auditorium served eight hundred and sixty students . The fa- culty was increased to 46 teachers handling 75 courses and 56 374 units of credit. Since 1958 twenty-three class rooms and a separate industrial arts-music wing have been added to Ruskin. Today the faculty has grown to 75: the student body, 1800. The school offers 80 courses and 67 units of credit in 54 class rooms, two audio-visual rooms, withalibrary, cafeteria, offices, agymnasium-auditorium, a36 station language laboratory, and an industrial arts-music annex of six rooms. 6
