Many of us knew him as a fine, outstanding teacher, who enrichedtheday of eachof his many students. Then, at the beginning of the second semester of 1961, he stepped into the position of assistant principal. He not only has helped our principal, Mr. Steck, but he has guided the student body toward higher goals, to make this a model school. His tact, friendliness, and sincere interest in the students have endeared him to the heart of Ruskin. Our sincere thanks and the dedication of this, the 1962 Mirage, go to Mr. Douglas Lawrence. board of education Each of these men has made a contribution to what our senior high school is today. Their foresight has resulted in a well-balanced and extensive school pro- gram and in an excellent modern building and equipment. In 1902 Ruskin ' s enroll- ment was 33; today it is 1,454. Thus vision has become reality through the years. LEFT TO RIGHT: Lyle Schultz, Donald Newkirk, R. E. ' .Sfinj.eft, 41B W Mra . It C - x-l ■fiy During our four years here at Ruskin, many doors have been opened for us, the graduating class of 1962. We began our high school career in the fall of 1958, which was the first year our present building was used. Since then, Ruskin has purchased many pieces of modern equipment, completed the first floor rooms, and added a wing for music and shop classes. The staff has been increased by one assistant principal, two counselors, and twenty three teachers. Ruskin has been given a triple A rating and accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. Many of the members of our class helped organize some of Ruskin ' s finest clubs --including FTA, RHALS, Esthetics, El Circulo Espanol, Rendez-Vous Francais, and the Science Club. We have also helped represent our school by taking part in district and state contests, playing in the Golden Eagle Band in the Rose Bowl Parade, and entering athletic competition. We seniors --through wonderful co-operation, talent, and hard work- -have tried to present enjoyable class assemblies each year. Our themes have been Television Variety, South Pacific, Roaring Twenties, and a talent show at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We are happy and proud that Annemor Rygh, Ruskin ' s exchange student, has been able to share our senior year and graduate with us . When we are in college, working, and founding. homes in the future, we will remember Ruskin, the things we have learned in her classes, the friends we have made in her activities, and the fun we have had here throughout high school. ■M THE CLASS OF 1952 LJn m Stt m m ' ... ANNE KATHRINE RYGH Norwegian Garland Cake was served at the tea where school personnel and students met Annemor. J our exchange student Ruskin ' s first foreign exchange student, Anne Kathrine Rygh, known as Annemor, is from Dram- men, Norway. She is one of 23 foreign students in Kansas City sponsored by the schools this year through the American Field Service. Annemor lost no time in adapting to our ways of life. She was welcomed so warmly by students, faculty, and administrators that she felt at home immediately. Her bubbling personality has won her many, many friends where ever she goes . I love to hear Annemor talk, is often over- heard by students . Even though she has studied Eng- lish six years, she still has a characteristic accent that everyone likes to hear. Annemor ' s excellent scholastic abilities have made her an honor roll student. She likes her sub- jects and studies hard. In addition to her family in Norway: her father who is a doctor, mother who is a nurse, and 15- year-old twin sisters, she has acquired an Ameri- can home with the G. R. Warrens. She now has her first brother, Don; two new sisters, Anne and Ellen; and a new Mother and Daddy. After talking with the other foreign studenrs, I wouldn ' t trade places with any of them, Annemor has often said. Both the matinee and evening performances were well attended. Perhaps this was partially due to the suspense created by advance publicity. They listen to our problems and help us solve them, supervise the class-wide testing and College Night, and iron out the wrinkles to make our school year successful. To do this, they must start their work during the summer with the planning of classes and grouping. Mr. Johnston, who is serving his sixth year as a Ruskin counselor, helps the freshmen. Mrs. Langford, who advises juniors and seniors, is serving her third year in the capacity of counselor. ' Mr. Murry, in his second year, is now serving as a full-time counselor to the sophomores. The girls set an example for the whole student body to follow . Ruskin ' s first Pep Club was organized during the fall of 1928 by Miss Mullinax, social science and dramatics teacher. The squad was composed of eleven students. An all-white uniform composed of a long-sleeved shirt, slacks, and a sailor hat was worn by all the members. The year the squad had to be split into Senior and Junior Varsity divisions. The senior squad ' s uniform is a royal blue two-piece suit with a four -corner white blouse, white socks, gloves, scarf, and shoes. Besides putting signs up on game days and decorating goal posts, the Pep Club plans all the pep assemblies that are held throughout the school year and also the Home- coming Dance during the football season. In the fall, they put up in the cafeteria a display of work from the art department. Christmastime was kept hectic with work on the window, and in January they sponsored and put up a display of prize-winning photographs sent around the country by the Kodak Company. The Club ' s big spring activity was co- sponsoring, with the Rendez-Vous Francais, the Beaux Arts iBall, held on March 17, At the beginning of each semester the Club ini- tiated new members. The Vocal Music Department has grown right along with Ruskin, It now numbers 475 members, making up the freshman-sophomore choruses, Boys ' and Girls ' Glee Clubs, Concert Choir, Madrigal, and various ensembles . The freshman-sophomore choruses, 395 strong, assure us of continuing excellence in the future. The Boys ' and Girls ' Glee Clubs entertained us in assemblies and competed at contest. The Concert Choir is a constant source of pride to Ruskin. The carefulty chosen voices mold into a melodious unit under the direction of Mr. Tarry. They practice their teamwork daily, and it has been evident in their performances in assemblies, Christ- mas Vespers, choral concerts, Baccalaureate, Commencement, and contest. The Madrigal group and other ensembles are made up of voices taken from the cho- ruses and choir. They meet after school to polish the ir style for contest, assemblies, and other engagements. The success of our Vocal Music Department is largely due to the instruction, as- sistance, and direction of Mr. Fred Tarry. He gives generously of his time to write a tuneful chapter in each Ruskin year. Also, for the first year Ruskin has a full-time ac- companist other than a student. Mrs. Janice DuVall does a wonderful job of keeping our singers on key. Our vocalists have lovely possessions other than their voices. They now occupy a music room in the new wing. Here they no longer have to share facilities with the band, for they have a spacious room expressly for them. Ruskin is proud of its talented singers, and rightfully so, for they have proved them- selves competent throughout the year . the madrigal singer FIRST RQi4 j__LEFT_TO RIGHT: Janet Lanford, Marcia Schultz, Marilyn Frounfelter, Betty Boltz, Linda Whitsitt, Linda Sharg SECOND ROW: Dick Hudson, Scott Husby, Weston McCune, Jeff Hildebrandt. THIRD ROWTTomDaniels, Jon Perry, Tim Moore, Frank Koonce, Jim Marfield, Tom Taylor. The vocal music department has three regular extra-curricular groups meeting each week: the Girls ' Glee Club, the Boys ' Glee Club, and the Mad- rigal Singers. The boys ' group is open to any boy in school while the girls are selected by audition, a total of forty being allowed into the group. This year marks the fourth year for several members. The TVIadrigal group is selected by invitation of the director and has been in existence for three years. Originally a group specializing in sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth century music, the group has changed its outlook to more popular styles, and has revised the membership to ten boys and six girls . Soloists and other ensembles are selected in advance of the music con- tests, and are trained particularly for participation in those events. How- ever, it is also established that the skills acquired in singing in a small group contribute to the skills used in singing in a large group. Thus solos, en- sembles, and glee clubs all serve the purpose of exposing the students to musical styles, techniques, and the satisfaction of creating a musical ex- perience.
