Some people think I am a ghost ' cause I ' m always around when something happens. Other people think I am just a little devil, ' cause I ' m always tellin ' on ' em, but to the people who really know me, I ' m just a buddy who ' s always around to help cheer at the ball games, and help eat all the food at the picnics, and snitch on tests, and all those little things that make a guy feel really wanted. Naturally, I was the most likely to be chosen as your guide through this yearbook, since I know more about this school and its activities than any normal person. Well, now that you know who and what I am, let ' s look inside and see just who does what at Ruskin High School. ,o J on p «j , ? ft !m v Dr. Carl E. Wallace L. Pinkepank John E. Stewart r. Billy T. Wall V. X L . % The greatest experiment in history is that which asks the question Can a form of govern- ment which bases its policies on the will of a voting public survive? Our great country is involved in this ex- periment. Its existence and perpetuation depend upon the wisdom, understanding and participation of informed citizens. As your superintendent, I trust that to the education you have received in your public schools you will add prayer and meditation which alone can give you the wisdom and spiritual in- sight which is needed so badly in our country today. May God bless you in all your efforts toward good. Sincerely, Dr. Carl E. Wagner Administration The success of Ruskin High School can only be determined by evaluating its graduates. Your success depends upon the wise use made of your abilities, time, and energy while at Ruskin. It is up to each one of you to do your best so as to improve yourself and your school. It is our hope that you will leave a record at Ruskin that will do justice to yourself and to the school. May you look back upon your days at Ruskin with a great sense of pride and satis- faction. Student Council A n „ Over the top in magazine sales! Council hard at work. The major fund raising project this year was the annual magazine sales sponsored by the Student Council. The students of Ruskin sold over $3100 worth of subscrip- tions of which the Student Council realized over $950 in profits. Sponsored by the Student Council 91 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is a select group of students who have shown unusual service, leadership, character, and scholarship. Only 15 per cent of the seniors, 10 per cent of the juniors and 5 per cent of the sophomores are allowed membership in the local chapter. This is the third class of the Ruskin High School National Honor Society which was reactivated in 1957. There are twenty seniors, seventeen juniors, and fourteen pro- bationary sophomore members who will become active members next year. Students were chosen for this society by a committee of six faculty members, two sponsors, and Mr. Blaine Steck, principal. The emblem of the National Honor Society is a keystone upon which is superimposed a flaming torch. On either side of the torch are the initial letters of the society, C S L S, which stand for character, service, leadership, and scholarship. Two Of Ruskin ' s First Row: Mrs. F. May, Sponsor; L. Quill and Scroll has been interested primarily in recognizing the work of the individual student journalist. Through outstanding work students gain entrance into the organization. To be eligible for a Quill and Scroll charter, a high school must publish a newspaper, a yearbook or a magazine which is considered of sufficient merit by the executive council. Besides promoting individual endeavor and supplying practical publication information through a magazine issued four times a year, the organization sponsors criticisms of manuscripts and publications, helps in the organization of state press asso- ciations and endeavors to acquaint school officials and the public with the value of high school journalism. Mrs. Lois Moore is the sponsor of this organization at Ruskin. The students honored by being nominated for Quill and Scroll this year are pictured below. This year the Blue Eagle Marching Band started things off with a bang by performing on tele- vision with sixty-two other bands at the University of Missouri Band Day. The organization also participated in the Warrensburg, Missouri Home- coming, and was awarded second place in the Class A marching band division. In addition to these trips, the group performed at all home foot- ball games. The first show was entitled Faces in the Ruskin Halls. Other half-ti me shows included The Satelite Story, Here Comes the Band, and the Homecoming half-time, Gifts for the Queen. Still not having done enough, the Blue Eagles went to Lee ' s Summit, and performed with their musicians at the Ruskin-Lee ' s Summit game. All school pep assemblies were aided greatly by their presence. Many exciting plans for the future are being considered by this able group of students. The capable leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Seward, band instructors, has been largely responsible for a successful and happy year. 94 Sponsored by Joe ' s Drive-in 110th Blue Ridge Below Brass ensemble from concert band. And Blew Our Lungs Out One of the first things the concert band prepared for was the winter band concert, which was a combined program with the elementary and ad- vanced grade school bands also participating. Three members of the high school group were chosen to play in the North Central Missouri Band- masters Clinic Band at Chillicothe, Mo. Selected to go were Loyal Stubbs (trombone), Harold Nagel (cornet), and Eugene Lutes (horn). The music makers participated in many programs: William Jewell Concert Band Clinic, The Central Missouri State College Clinic Band, the Second Conference Concert in Grandview, and the Community Teachers ' Association program. All the small ensembles and the master band presented an assembly for the student body before entering selections in the district contest. Mem- bers holding 1 ratings went to the state contest at the Lniversity of Missouri. To conclude the season, a special spring concert was pre- sented. All The World ' s A Stage The Thespian Drama Club of Ruskin High School was chartered in January of 1958 for the purpose of enjoying opportunities and experiences related to the field of speech arts. A member must be enrolled in Speech I or have had one year of speech training in school, and must maintain a grade average of M. In teaching appreciation for theatre and its related fields, meetings are held on Tuesdays according to an approved schedule. Guest speakers and special events are planned by the officers and sponsor. The members of the club act as host and hostess to any special event held in the school that is part of speech arts training, such as the Midwest Speech Arts Clinic. Also through the club, Ruskin is part of the Starlight Theatre First Nighters organization. The symbol of the Greek Theatre Masks is the design of the club pin which was adopted in April of 1958. 106 Let ' s give a rousing cheer for those who gave us their generous support rfu-tz tZ-S sj, , J t ' Advertisements G.P.
