ORTHWEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS September September October October October October October November 7 Pine Ridge S D Crawford High Gordon High Martin S D Hay Springs High Chadron Prep Chadron High Hemingford High 40 6 46 13 40 6 40 0 33 7 27 13 26 7 47 23 The 1959 Rushvrlle Longhorns ended the most successful season since 1951 with eight strarght v1ctor1es an undefeated season and the undisputed Northwest Nebraska Conference Title The Rushville team was outweighed both in the line and in the backfreld by all opponents except Pme Ridge and Chadron High however they still rolled up 299 pomts to 74 for the op position The Longhorns had a rushing total of 2 512 yards to 833 for the opponents A very teams as were all but twenty -one pornts scored by the opponents One of Rushvrlle's greatest assets this year was the fact that we had four good ball carriers When the opponents would lay for one the others would take over Grant Strong carried 86 times for 927 yards or 10 8 yards per carry He scored 14 touchdowns and 10 extra pomts or 94 points Kenneth Lrnders carried 68 times for 465 yards or 7 yards per carry He scored 6 touch downs and 3 extra points for a total of 39 pomts Denny Hoffman carried 74 times for 466 yards or 6 3 yards per carry He scored 13 touch downs and one extra point for a total of 79 points John Hills carried 79 times for 405 yards or 5 1 yards per carry He scored 9 touchdowns and 5 extra points for a total of 59 points Rushville placed f1V6 players on the All-Conference team They were Bill Gottier Grant Strong Lennie McDaniel Mark Strong and Jack Mitchell Grant was also chosen for honora ble mention on the Class B All State Team B111 Gottier and Grant Strong were chosen by the Longhorn football team as the outstandrng players of the year Bill Gottrer was awarded the blocking trophy and John Hills the tackling trophy presented by the Sheridan County Star each year at the football banquet Fifty srx boys were presented football letters by Coach Stephenson at this same time 12 ' ' . . - 26 ' - 3 ' - 10 ' . . - 17 ' ' - 23 - 30 ' - large percentage of the opposition's rushing yardage was made against the second and third
