Camera Service Camera Service, divided into two groups, is supervised by Mr. Johnson. The experienced group met on Wednes- days in 124 and the inexperienced group met on Thursdays in l25A. The purpose of these groups is-to learn the various parts of a camera, how to use one and how to develop and enlarge the prints. The experienced group performs a great service to the school by taking the pictures for the King's Page and the Annual. Math Scholarship The math scholarship group met on Wednesdays under the direction of Mr. Bear. lts purpose was to review high school mathematics in preparation for a competitive examination given at Marquette University in the spring. ln the 194-7 examination, two members of the group received honorable mentions. All seniors who have had five semesters of high school mathematics and are tak- ing their sixth semester may join the group. Music Council The music council was organized dur- ing the last semester. It consisted of representatives from the various music classes of Miss Sargeant and Mr. Zahorik. This activity met on Mondays during the eighth period in 121. The main purpose of the council was to increase the efficiency of its organizations through well planned student help and thus give greater service to the school. The stand- ards necessary for winning a music award given to students upon gradua- tion were established. A suitable award for these achievements has been chosen. Junior Red Cross Council One of the most active organizations is the Junior Red Cross council under the leadership of Miss Dorothy Gardner. This year the council's most ambitious projects were to fill gift boxes for the children in Europe and collect school supplies for Germany. Other activities have been the promotion of first aid, and Home Nursing courses at King, projects for the Curative Workshop made by woodshop students, and games for the Veterans at Wood. Student Council The student council provides the stu- dents of King with their own governing body. It meets once a Week under the direction of Miss Mervash, Miss LaBine, and president Ted Spella, to discuss and try to solve the various problems which arise among the student. The council has a representative from each homeroom, but it can function well only with the Wholehearted sup- port of every King student. Auditorium Council The Auditorium Activities Council, commonly called the A. A. C., is under the supervision of Miss Miller. The activity meets on call in the auditorium. There is an elected member from each homeroom Who serves on the council for one semester. The council has re- cently drawn up a constitution by which the meetings are conducted. The purpose of the A. A. C. is to pro- mote better auditorium programs and noon hour activities. Future Scientists Future Scientists, supervised by Mr. Dummert on Tuesdays in 118, have discussed jet propulsion, mi- croscopes, animals, electronics and other subjects. Every week some member of the group prepares a lecture explaining his interest with the aid of dia- grams and models. For instance, one explanation dealt with the prin- ciple of radio waves, how they are produced and their applications. A general discussion follows these lectures. Anyone who is interested in sc'ence is wel- come to attend these meetings, whether he is a mem- ber or not. Electronics Club The Electronics club met on Tuesdays after school during the year. Mr. Wing sponsored this activity. The group dis- cussed various types of electronic equip- ment, and had some demonstrations per- formed for them. The members of the club were also able to study and practice for amateur radio operator's licenses. Accounting and Ticket Sales Five students of King spend about two hours a day in Bookstore HB" under the guidance of Mr. Zimmerman. Their var- ious services are: the collecting and check- ing of money for the King's Page, Kingis Crown, and graduation fees, keeping all records of the teachers, desk books and deposits of all money, taking care of the lost and found, selling gym towel cards and bicycle court parking ticketsg selling and keeping records of tickets for all ac- tivities, handling the. music cards, selling tickets for all athletic and musical eventsg buying and selling second hand books, and making out tax reports. Without their assistance, the school business would lack the efficient orderly fashion in which it is conducted. Visual Service Mr. SteWart's visual service cadets run the electrical equipment for the school. These cadets have been trained, for at least one semester, during an eighth hour activity. During this time they learn to run the projectors, phono- graphs, recorders and the public address system. There are several advanced cadets on duty every hour to help the teachers run this equipment. Home Nursing Home Nursing was offered again this year for those students interested in home nursing. This activity was held in 125A under the supervision of Mrs. Wright, a Red Cross Nurse. The class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:00 and it consists of a 30 hour course. The groupis purpose is to prepare girls for the caring of ill at home. Coach Robert Neubauer took over duties as head coach and instituted the HT" formation at King. Varsity members of 1946 changed positions, and all worked hard orientating themselves. The team also suffered from a great many injuries to players. Nevertheless they wound up with a .500 average for the eight-game season. In the first game King lost a tough defensive battle to Lincoln, 10-0, before an overflow crowd. They went on to win from West 24-14. The Generals dropped their third game to Washington, 12-0, but bounced back the next week to win from East, 19-0, and chalked up another victory the following Satur- day, taking Tech 14-20. The Kingmen then lost to South 14-0 and to Custer 18-0. They finished the season with a 10-0 score in a snowy, muddy game against North! Bob Lowe, rugged right tackle, was rewarded for his sparkling defensive play, by receiving all-city and all-state honors. Although January and June graduations depleted the team ranks somewhat, several of the varsity members will be back on the field next year. 1 X, Top Row--Roht. Sophomore Football The 1947 Sophomore squad working under a new system, proved very successful. Under the coaching of coach Hanks, all the fellows were molded into one group. Not only does football teach one the way to run and tackle, but it expresses and shows the need for team work in life as well as on the field. Practice was held during the eighth hour and after school. Scrimmages with the varsity and freshmen squads were held. Due to the training and experi- ence, the squad should prove to he very good ma- terial for next season's varsity. The members of the squad received minor letters for playing in the City's B Conference. During the course of the season good sportsmanship was always displayed. Even in defeat, Q , the squad took it as a team. At the end of the season, the squad tied for second place w.th Custer. In scor- ing the squad had 78 points to their opponents 57. In only three out of eight games did the opponents cross King's goal. The scores of the games are: King Custer . . . King North .. King East . . . King South . . King Tech ..... King Lincoln . . . King Washington King West ..... Q.1 X f . K Freshman Football When the Freshman boys were called out for foot- ball, Coach Foti was greeted by a horde of aspirants. Immediately the boys were conditioned by grass drills, and were ably instructed in the. fundamentals of football. Soon they learned plays and began scrim- maging among themselves and the Sophomore team. After a few weeks of training, the Coach was able to single out the boys who would make up the team, which would play East in their first game. Since this game was an early game for the Freshman teams of both King and East, it was highly defensive, and went scoreless for'the first three Quarters. ln the final quarter King showed its superiority by scoring a touchdown and adding the extra point. When an experienced Country Day junior-varsity played host to Kingfs freshmen, they almost got more than they bargained for. Although King lost the game 13 to 6, King did very well as can be expected of an all-frosh team. It started slowly because it lacked experience, but it concluded successfully by whipping Whitefish Bay 16 to 0. Whitefish Bay proved no match for the sturdy line and driving backs that Coach Foti had efficiently developed. Besides winning and losing, the boys on the team acquired something more admirable, that of good sportsmanship. Cross Country Team The 1947 Cross Country Team climaxed a very successful season by winning the City Cross Country championship. Running against seven other teams, King totaled 41 points in the City Meet, 18 points ahead of the second place Winner. The boys, under the direction of Coach Norman Ruenzel, Won four dual meets, the north sectional, and placed second in the state meet. Dual meets were won from Washington, Whitefish Bay, Lincoln and East. ln the north sectional meet, which King won for the third straight year, they placed well ahvead of East, Washington and Lincoln. The runners were second in the state meet hehind Madison West. They lost a dual meet to Bay View, and placed in a three-way tie with Bay View and Pulaski in a quadrangular meet - Lincoln was fourth. Varsity Basketball After coming close for ten seasons, Coach Charles Polomis finally came up with a championship bas- ketball squad during the 1947-48 campaign. Prospects for success in the conference. looked dark as practice commenced on October 15. Only two lettermen, Read Morgan and Rick Barnett, had re- turned. After weeks of hard work a starting team of Armin Dassow and Rick Barnett as forwards, Read Morgan at center, and Richard Beck and Glen Fossum as guards, was ready for competition. The Generals dropped their opener to Marquette but went on to win three straight from Sheboygan, Kenosha, and Fond du Lac. King started the con- ference season by losing to East 40-37. They then swept to six consecutive victories over Washington, North, Custer, West, Tech, and Pulaski. A loss at the hands of South didn't discourage the Generals, for they returned the next week to defeat Lincoln. King went on to conquests over Bay View and Juneau, thus gaining a three-way tie for first place in the conference, along with South and Lincoln. In the tournament play-offs the Kingmen edged a stubborn North squad 40-38 in a thrilling overtime contest. The Generals avenged their earlier defeat by South by gaining a 53-49 victory over the Cardi- nals in the final tournament game at the auditorium. Four of the Kingmen received all-city honors. Glen Fossum, who graduated in January, was chosen on the Journalis mid-season squad as first team guard. Read Morgan was placed at center on the Hrst team of the regular all-city quintet. Rick Barnett and Armin Dassow received second berth honors as forwards. Top Row- John Beauchaine, James Klabunde, ,lack Broetzmann, Donald Trythall, Eugene Lord, Coach Myhre.
