GGILA S Rufus King was an American journalist and soldier. He was born in New York, January 26, 1814, and died there on the 13th of October in 1876. He graduated from West Point in 1833. Three years later, he resigned from the army, and entered the engineering corps. He soon became assistant engineer of the New York and Erie Railroad. He was the editor of the Albany uAdvertiser for four years. Having then removed to Wisconsin in 1843, King became the editor of the Milwaukee Sen- tinel and Gazette during 1845-1861. Rufus King was the first Superintendent of Schools in Milwaukee, serving without pay for three years. During the Civil War King was brigadier general of the famous ulron Brigade. He also served as U. S. minister to the Papal States at Rome. Because of his excellent service to the well-being of humanity and the high ideals for which he stood, our school is proud to bear the honored name of Rufus King.
