BOHN FOR RUFUS KING HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL Anniversaries are milestones . . . they give us reason to pause and to take breath and to consider our journey-whence we have come and whither we are going. They are the meeting ground of memory and hope. During 1946, Milwaukee will commemorate its centennial. You and I and the people of the State and Nation will participate in a series of events which will mark this anniversary. We will take inventory of past achievements, and make plans for the future. A city is the heart of democracy. All over this country we have dozens of such great hearts beating in the form of cities, hearts manufacturing the blood of commerce and industry, and pumping it over a series of roads that are like veins and arteries extending from the city heart to the body of the land. Milwaukee is one of those great city hearts. And it is well that we pause during the centennial to consider our journey- whence we have come and whither we are going. In dedicating this Annual to Milwaukeeis centennial, we cannot over- look the great contributions made by Rufus King and other schools of Milwaukee to our city, county, state and nation. They have been, and shall continue to be, the bulwark of our civilization. As Mayhr of !Milwaukee, I should like to invite you to participate in Mi1waukee's tennial during 1946. .Ar A-4. X JOHN L. By order of the Board of School Com- missioners. RUFUS KING, President G. ABBEY, Secretary 1Vlilwaukee,. Dec., 1846 In 1834, Dr. 0. P. Wolcott, who was then engaged in the practice of medi- cine in the. East, came to visit his brother, Dr. Erastus B. Wolcott in Mil- waukee. Here are his words: MSuch a miserable-looking place selected for a settlement 1 had never seen before. It was one unbroken series of sandfbanks, frog-ponds, clay hills and river marshes, with the unpretentious habitations of probably five thousand. people scattered around in a desultory sort of way. In three days I had gained the acquaint- ance of nearly every man in town, and I made. it a point to abuse everybody l met for locating in such an ill-favored and unpromising stretch of waste. Such f6L,4auf a spot, I informed them, was intended f M Q only for water-fowls and wild beasts, L ,z not for the dwellings of man. Milwaukee Bay is distinctly marked on the map attributed to Marquette which was dis- covered in a convent in Montreal and which is now in the Jesuit College in that city. La Salle and his party probably stopped here on their way south in 1679,an.d.t.l1e name' first appears as uMi1- liokew in the Jesuit Relations of that year. This and the numerous other variants were attempts to transliterate the Tndian name fmeaning ugood landswj of the village which the white men found here. The first Englishman known to have visited the spot was the adventurous trader, Alexander Henry, in 1760. There is a record of a French fur-trading post in 1763. In 1795 Jacques Vieau established a permanent post for the North-Western Fur Company, which he seems to have kept until it was superseded in 1820 by one belonging to Astorls American Fur Company. Vieau built a dwelling and a warehouse and engaged in extensive trading operations. In 1818 there arrived a young Frenchman, Laurent Solomon Juneau C1793-18561, who married one of Vieau's daughters and eventually bought out his business. The settlement was on the direct line of travel from Fort Dearborn fChicagoj and Green Bay, and as soon as the lndian titles were ex- tinguished by the treaties of 1831 and 1833 with the Menominees, colonists began to come to the neighborhood. ln 1833 Morgan L. Martin f1805- 1887J , of Green Bay, explored the harbor, made a map of the place, and entered into an agreement with Juneau and Michael Dousman for its develop- ment. A sawmill was built in 1834. The east side m!wauLee Was plotted in the summer of 1835, and the West side a little later by Byron Kilbourn. The rival settlements, officially Milwaukee East Side and Milwaukee West Side, were popularly known as .Juneautown and Kilbourntown. A third, called Walker's Point, was established on the south side by George H. Walke1'. The east side and west side towns had bitter quarrels, especially over the building of bridges, for their streets had been surveyed independently and did not come out at the same points on the river. They were sepa- rately incorporated as townships of Milwaukee County in 1837 but in 1839 united as wards of the same village, each keeping complete financial and administrative .autonomy of its own affairs. Walk- er's Point was annexed as a third ward in 1845, and in 1846 the three were incorporated as the City of Milwaukee, of which Solomon Juneau was elected the first mayor. The first vessel. anchored in Milwaukee Bay in 1779. A Chicago packet entered the river in 1823. The first newspaper, the Milwaukee Advertiser, began publication on July 14, 1836, and a public school was opened in that year. ln 1839 George Smith and Alexander Mitchell established the Fire and Marine Insurance Bank, which for 40 years was one of the strongest banking houses west ol the Alleghcniesg its notes passed at par through panics under which even government issues de- preciated, and it financed the 6'Milwaukee'7 and other western railways. The first brewery was built in 1840 by Owens and Pawlett. Connection was established with Chicago by telegraph in 18493 by railway in 1856. About 1840 began a stream of immigration from Germany, which was accelerated by the revolutionary movements of 1848 and con- tinued for half a century. Opening the sea- son with a dual meet against South proved fatal for the varsity as they were beat, but the MB team nipped South's NB 's for their first victory. Meeting Whitefish Bay proved profitable for King as it scored a double victory with both NA and H1379 teams winning. The third meet against Linc- oln was a memorable one. It was run in Juneau Park along the sea wall. A terrific wind lashed the lake. and a fine rain dropped during the en- tire race. Waves dampened the boys continually hampering their running. Under these abnormal conditions Lincoln won. East was King's next rival in a double dual meet. The varsity eked out a vic- tory while the uB'i team tied. The next meet., with Bay View, was the one n10St prized by the General Harriers. The south side school very highly favored and always a strong contender was upset by King. The NB team did not do so well in this meet as they were defeated. The MB squad then finished their season with a meet with East which they lost. Having Hnished their dual meets the varsity harriers entered into a series of tough runs. First came the North sectional meet involv- ing King, East, Washington, and Lincoln. This meet was won by King. Following this meet came a triangular with Pulaski and Juneau which was also won by King. Then came the all important City meet, South was victorious with King ending up in the fourth spot. The State meet was the last meet of the year, this being won by Bay View with King ending up in the fifth position. The season ended quite successfully with good pros- pects for next year. Uaraifg joofdaf Kings varsity grid squad, under the mentorship of Coaches Wolf and Hanks, started its training at the opening of school in September. The pros- pects for a great season were slim due to lack of returning material in some key positions. The boys worked hard for the opener with Marquette which the Kingmen won. The following Week saw the arrival of untimely rains and the cancellation of the Custer game. The lone preliminary game saw the Generals preparing for the conference opener with highly favored North Division. lnexperienee can be credited with the defeat in the opener. King's hopes were again dashed the following week as the King boys lost to a tricky Lincoln eleven. The third game saw a lot of determina- tion in the General team. This paid off in the first victory, over East. Not intending to stop at one win the Generals took the field the following Week against Vlfest for the King Homecoming. The King team was again victorious. The Generals now hitting the scoring pace at a rapid rate continued by spoiling Tech's homecoming for its third vie- tory. The last rival to be met by King was South Division, and the Cardinals proved quite formid- able, being favored over the King team by two touchdowns. This meant nothing as the Generals turned the tables and defeated the South siders by three markers. The season thus closed quite suecssfully with King finishing in fourth position behind the three first place teams. Their first semester of play was beset with defeats and bad breaks and it wasn't until the second round of play that the situation brightened. Gene. Schuelke and Ken Liebherr, and its early season defeats can be attributed to extreme in- experience. As the season progressed, however, the promising material was developed into a fairly good ball club under the watchful eye of Coach Polomis. The boys elimaxed the season of five wins and five losses by trouncing North Division, 44-35. North went on to the championship play- offs so the boys could be rightly proud of this win. Gene Schuelke was the mainstay of the squad, scoring most of the points, which gave him the city scoring title, and a berth on the all-city squad. Prospects for next year's team are very prom- ising. Those eagers who will be back next season include Jerry Dahl, Dick Goelzer, Dick Schulz, Doug Gostchock, Ron Shermacher, Ray Remmel, and a host of younger boys, which will all add up to a well balanced squad for next season. In winter our girls had three opportunities: The cadet classes were continued on Tuesday and Thursday. Basketball was offered to the seniors on Monday, the freshies on Tuesday, and to the sophomores and juniors on Wednesday. On Tues- day mornings Miss Mott had her tumbling class, and on Thursday morning Miss Altenhofen con- ducted her apparatus class. On Monday and WTC-dnesday, during the eighth hour, the girls had their chance to play volley ball. There were inter- class playoffs between all the volley ball classes. The finals were held between teams from the sec- ond and seventh hour classes. ln spring, on Monday, archery and tennis for beginners were given under the direction of Miss Altenhofen, and Miss Mott, and on Wednesday for the advanced players. On Tuesdays and Thurs- days Miss Mantsch held her softball class.
