He had been a faithful laborer in our midst. He was loyal to his students always speaking of them as our boys 'and girls. He spent the major portion of his time in behalf of the children who later mourned his passing. We all feel that life has been made more worth while by having known Mr. Morgan. If our departed friend and educator could speak, he would use the words of that great poet, Tennyson. The Crossing of the Bar Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea.. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep, Tums again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark: For tho' from out our boume of time and place, The flood may bear me far, I hone to see my pilot face to face, When I have crossed the bar. We the seniors of 1948. wish to dedicate our annual to the memory of our friend and teacher - - -- Herschel Morgan. FOREWORD With a strong desire and earnest thought we the class of '48 have attempted to portray within the covers of this book our fellow students and teachers as they pro- gress onward through the school year leaving their mark of friendship and love upon everyone they meet. It has been with earnest and tiring effort that we have completed this book under the masterful direction of Mr. Penrod. We have striven to portray to you the long list of organizations and activities of our school during the past year. A book, that today is a source of pleasing entertain- mentg tomorrow, it will hold a greater and deeper import- ance. Its likeness will describe a new message of pleasing memories and happy remembrances, which will have been made dearer by the passing of time. X Q x nm. 2 . ' I - at fAQ. CLASS HISTORY Once upon a time, twelve long years ago Mrs. Brinson was greeted by 13 very intelligent faces belonging to the graduating class of 48 . The people behind those faces were Dick Brown, Rosemary Lane, Claude Huffer, George Irvin, Leonard Hickey, Mary Rose Clevenger, Jack Riggin, Jim Riggin, Willis Hunnicutt, Carl O'Dell, Don Scott, Don Kennedy, George Smith. The second grade was taught by Miss Bell. We were joined by Bonnie Deaton from Washington and Arden Miller from Garfield. Our third grade was divided into two groups, it was taught by Mrs. Quick and Miss Whisman. This year we were joined by: Joanne Wesley from McKinley, John Harty from Selma, Bob Tudor from Gaston, Weldon Yoder from North Grove, Bob Buchanan from Selma: and John Mansfield from Burris. Jerry Branson came from Longfellow in the fourth grade. The teachers were Mrs. Post, East building and Miss Brooks the West building. Poor Miss Richardson and Mrs. Fredericks, by the time we reached the fifth grade we had very definite ideas on life. Our bulletin board was decorated with love notes. Our new people, Gordon Morrison from Cloverdale, Carol Riess from Jefferson, Barbara Ray from Eaton, Bob Parsons from Da1eville.' Mrs. Brinson thought she had gotten rid of us, but we were back. Mrs. Briner taught the other sixth grade. New members: Betty Robertson and Bob Foltz came from Selma, Walter Anderson from McKinley, Herbie Snider from Eaton, Vernon Eiler from Jefferson. Seventh Grade. We finally got in the big assembly. Mrs. Brinson got promoted with us. Cyrus Paul joined us from Jefferson. We won our Jr. High tourney in the 8th grade. Mrs. Brinson was our sponsor. By now we were old Freshmen. Nancy Lord and Rex M.organ joined us from Hartford City. George Smith and Cyrus Paul are back with us. Norma Emenhiser came from Wilson. Miss Atkinson was our sponsor. We got our class sweaters in our Sophomore year. We gave a skating party this year. Jim Fyfe joined us from Terre Haute. Mr. Brinkley was our sponsor. We gave a Carnival and the play Small Town Romeo in our Junior year. Our sponsors were Mr. Bixler and Miss Abraham. We bought our class rings. New stu- dents were Norma Osborne and Jane Crusius from Central. After twelve years we have finally reached the Senior row in the assembly. Our sponsors are again Miss Abraham and Mr. Bixler. We took our Senior trip to New York City and Washington D. C. and gave our Senior Play A Date with Judy . We also put out the school paper the Royerton Review and the Panorama . Our two new students are Sue Carol Muster from Center and Don Kennedy from Central. Wig? cw,-5,,,6q,,,, ,mf Cya Q.5 wR1kw , W, fjmgzwa W uf 2, VVXQESQ ml 592 0 qw W an MWQG 66 W Q gm, TWP? il? YM ga SENIOR THE BOYS SIGHTSEEING E1 OUR G PATRIOTISM It was a beautlful picture to behold the Senior Class of Royerton on the morning of September 5, 1947, as they stood at the fcot of the colossal Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's Island, New York Harbor. Many of the members of the class may never have this opportunity again. However, may each boy and each girl resolve to live a life endeavoring to spread liberty, justice, and peace to all mankind. Let us hope that it will .be possible for us to realize the meaning of what the father of one of the Senior boys meant when he said to his son, You may have seen the Statue of Liberty, but I tell you son, it meant more to me than anything' in all the world when I returned from World War I. Do we Americans really appreciate our freedom? We sincerely hope all the rest of you boys and girls of Royerton may have this grand privilege. Class- FRESHMEN FRESHMEN HISTORY We, the freshmen class of fifty-one, started in the first grade with an enrollment of ninety-four, in the year of nineteen thirty-nine. Now as freshmen we have eighty- - one. We had a class meeting and drew names for the Christmas exchange. which is December 19th. December 80 we decided to have a skating party at Gaston to which we invited the public. We are now planning our Biology trip to Chicago, but there are quite a number of things to be talked over. The freshmen class is very proud of our freshmen team. They have played two and lost one. There are three players off the team at present and it is a great loss to us and our team. The freshmen G.A.A. are to be initiated the week after we are back from our Christmas vacation. Everyone has cooperated and we are sureit will be a verv successful year, and the years to follow. The team played the Sophomores of Muncie Central two times. Both games were won by Royerton, the first by a score of 6 to 0 and the second also by a score of 6 to 0. BOYS INTERESTED IN TRACK FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM TRACK For the last two years the Royerton track team has won the county track tourney. Last year we came through with a total of seventy five points. Our closest opponent had only fourty two. Pictured above are the prospects for this year's track team. We think that they stand a good chance to bring home the county trophy again this year. CROSS COUNTRY This was also Royertons first year in cross country running with the help of Coach Brown and much hard work on the part of the boys we won a good percentage of our meets. We also placed third in the sectional meet at Anderson defeating larger schools such as Muncie Central, Marion, Kokomo, by a large margin.
