I, This year, as in years of the past, the Royal Oak High School band has gone out on the field regularly and put on a good show regardless of the weather. It is this spirit of showmanship that has given our band a well-earned reputation. Few high school bands attend football games at home and away with the regularity of the Royal Oak High School band. The one man responsible for this and to whom all the credit should go is Mr. W. J. Denman, the director. Since Mr. Denman came to this school in September, 1928, one of his main ambitions has been to turn out a good marching band each year. Then, when the season is over, to alter it quickly into a concert band. One of the difficulties with which a high school director is faced is producing volume on the field and the right difference for concert playing. During the last two years the band has attended the State contests and won Second divisional ratings. Mr. Denman expects better luck this year with a more seasoned organization. Within the last year a point system has been devised so that members may earn their letter for band. This system is, in some respects, similar to that used in awarding varsity letters in athletics and acts as an added incentive to the members.
