Lucky indeed are those people who are associated with individuals who make the dark days bright and the happy days more joyous. Such a person is Miss I. Constance Kinqan and that is why we of the Iune 1940 qraduatinq class find pleasure in dedicating our Oak to her. ll . If all other senior activities during the year are as nice as this was, we should make class history in R.O.H.S. OCTOBER- Dear Diary: Mother Nature's closing up shop for the winter, but weire just beginning. This month we had our election of class officers. Result: President-John Subia Vice-President-Marjorie Wardell Secretary-Pat Puvogel Treasurer - Well, Duane Smith and Garth Owen tied, but a special election was held and Garth came out QusaT!Le15 Have R urns oaoea!! ahead. Our Hrst class par- ty came this month, too. Joe Andrews, president of the Jan- CK uary class, was M.C. 'la We had boxes of can- 7,4 dy for door prizes 'n' everything! Just a few received those, but we all had a good time! NOVEMBER- Dear Diary. We put on our first formal this month, and was it a success? It was the Thanksgiving Alumni Dance. Everybody and his best girl was there! It was grand! iHard work, but grand.l The theme was an Evening in Paris and George Kava- naughis orchestra supplied the music. It was good to see so many of the alumni again. DECEMBER- Dear Diary: Along with Christmas this month brought the senior play, Smilin' Through. Our 12B's came out with quite a few parts, and I'll not hesitate in saying that they played them well. John Dallavo and Bill Lenhard were transferred to old men, young men, and old men again when they played the roles of John Carteret and Dr. Owen Harding respectively. Betty Horning played the part of Moonyeen Clare and was as pretty as a picture. John Turner made a perfect Willie Ainley, and Duane Smith and another Smith boy, Bill by name, put on their best manners to act as two of the wedding guests. Little Diary, we didn't know that there was a real Santa Claus, did we? Well, there is. I saw him at our Christ- mas class party. He gave us Karmelkorn and apples. Someone whispered to me afterwards that it was Mr. Upton, but I wouldn't let them bluff me again. No, sir: first they tell me there is a Santa, then they say there isn t. But seeing is believing, and I saw him. P. S. They had mistletoe. JANUARY- Dear Diary: We're out. was the cry of the January class on the 25th, but from what I saw of them after the exercises, most of them were down and out. Yes, down in the dumps and put out about graduating. However the commence- PAGE EIGHTEEN ft Wh , 'N 'M ment dance took a lot of their sadness away and left them with sweet memories. It was given to them, you know, by us 12B's, 'cause that's the way it's always been. The theme was that of a Southern Plantation, and the gym was simply beautiful, even if we 12B's do say so ourselves. Frank Link's orchestra played and everyone had a wonderful time. FEBRUARY- Dear Diary: Well, ahem, we're 12A's now, and we decided to wel- come the 12B's into our one big happy family by giv- ing them a class party. We did, by Jiminy, and candy hearts and valentines were floating all around the place. Laughter and fun were by no means scarce. MARCH- Dear Diary: evegywhere and candy paper were given out. This time it was the operetta The Mikado. Eddie Maxey and A1 LeRoy were the only 12A's to play leading roles. They posed as Nanki Poo and Pish Tush and they did swell jobs of it, too. The chorus of townspeople was composed of the A Cappella Choir. Those 12A's who are in the choir are: Guy Campbell, Suzanne Wetzel, Winnie Park- er, Dorris Reed, Gilbert McGeehan, Sue King, Margaret Coran, Marjorie Wardell, Carlton McKenzie, Mabel Beech- am, Jennie Savino, Shirley Holman, John Sanford, Vir- ginia Labbitt, and Jim Campbell. This month was a busy one, for we also had senior control day. John Subia was our prin- cipal, and we all de- cided to support him as President of the U. S. if he ever ran for the office. The Stravinsky Aeronautical Manufacturing Company will soon confirm reports of the existence of such a plane, seating two hundred and sev- enty-live passengers. Through John Turner, the well- known friend of Stravinsky, the class of June 1940 of Royal Oak high school has succeeded in chartering this monstrous airliner for its first flight around the world. For this reason a bad- minton class was started in 1938 with Mr. Baldwin as the instructor. See Badminton, page 49 It was through the efforts of the Gf A. A. that the many new games were introduced in Royal Oak high school. It is traditional for G. A. A. girls to usher at high school activities, thus rendering a service to the school. Miss Pearl MacArdle and Miss Emma Doerr are the sponsors of this club. The G. A. A. is proud of three of their girls who con- tinued their .sport activities from their freshman year to their senior year. These girls are Margaret Schnell, Eileen Puff and Hope Thomas. Barring serious injuries the R.O.H.S. baseball nine of 1943 will probably see Dick King, catcher, Bob Groves, inflelder, and Tom Koschtial, outfielder, climaxing four years as regulars on the Acorn squad. Switching from freshmen we turn our attention to- ward other outstanding players. Frank Penoza, playing centerfield, was feared by all opposing base runners for his accurate, lengthy, and speedy return of, balls hit into the outer garden within thirty feet of him. Patrolling the outer extremities to the left of Penoza was seen Amo Sinelli. Amo, although not always a dead shot when in the field, made up for it when at the plate. Mighty Amo kept within reach of the .400 mark all season with his power wallops. Along with these two in the line-up during the ma- jority of the games were slim Jim Shader covering the initial sackg scoop Tom McNeal hovering over the key- stone bagg Bob Groves at the hot corner g helping out between second and third was Bob Martin, Dick King squatted behind the plate to receive the offerings of pitchers Jim Bertraw, Marvin Hunt or Marting in the left field territory Judge Jim Hartrick was most always recognizable. Thus did the Oak baseballers shape up in 1940. Clemens 48 June 1-Monroe Royal Oak May 18-Regionals-third with 29 points. Although our track team didn't have a very impressive record for the current season, many of our fleet-footed stars bettered old track records which had stood for years. Clyde Johnson, who had been quite a success as a half- miler last year, ran the mile for the first time in his ca- reer against Fordson. In the first meet of the year he broke the Cass Field record set by Art Willis, former R.O.H.S. track great, who graduated last June. John- sons new record 437 5 Willis' old time 4.40.2. Then Hal Carpenter who ran the quarter last spring, tried the half for the first time against Wyandotte and sped around the oval in 2.02.4, just two seconds short of the record set by Brelford of Birmingham in 1938. The thinclads then hit their stride in May, tying Grosse Pointe on May 1 52 all and then on May 11, Royal Oak beat Mt Clemens for their first victory in three years. Then on May 18 they journeyed to Jefferson Field in v Y l 1 y PAGE THIRTY-SIX . 'N n Ferndale and placed third in the Class A Regionals, qual- ifying six men to compete in the State Tournament. Hal Carpenter burned up the cinders and broke a twelve year old State Tournament record by winning the half mile event in the sensational time of 1.59. The best Clyde Johnson could do was to finish third in the mile which was won by Woolsey of Jackson who turned in the mile in 4.30.8, the fastest time on record in State competition. Sammy Stout, who looked like a sure shot in the quar- ter, was unable to compete because of illness. Bob Ozias, Gilbert McGeehan, and Johnson will be the only regulars lost by graduation, so next season should be one of, if not the most successful seasons enjoyed by any track team Royal Oak has ever produced. Baldwin and his basket ball team fooled the sports writers who predicted a bad season for them, by coming through as the dark horse and smashing their predictions with eight victories and six defeats. In the regionals held in Ferndale, they won from Grosse Pointe and Ferndale before being defeated by Pontiac. Lincoln was the easiest team for the Oaks to beat, and for this reason they were defeated by the Oaks in two regular season contests and once in the regionals. Royal Oak was a constant threat in the Border Cities League competitions, beating each team at least once and Wyan- dotte and Ferndale twice. The league's final standings showed the Oaks in third place and only one game out of first place. The most sensational and consistent winning combina- tion was Tom McNeal and Bob Martin. McNeal is a for- ward, and broke the record for free shotsg Martin, for- ward, has the least number of fouls called of all the cage squad players. Hal Carpenter was a most consistent scoring threat at center: Frank Penoza was a steady de- fensive player, and Jim Shader or Dick Jackson were long shot artists at the guard positions. Last year, Knapp, who incidentally looks too short for a good distance man, won all of the dual meets in which he took part with the exception of the Monroe meet. Dick won both the regional, which was run off at Dearborn, and the state meet in which approximately one hundred boys jogged over the two mile course at Ypsi- lanti. Knapp intends to attend Michigan State Normal, where he will probably be as much of a success as a runner as he was here. Although he will be up against much stif- fer competition in college, he should be able to more than hold his own against them UIQ., PAGE THIRTY-EIGHT 'M , I 1 . f 1 HAL CARPENTER Half Miler STATE CHAMP Hal Carpenter, lanky quarter miler of last year, went the half this year and all of his performances were 2:05 or under. Carpenter set a new Cass Field record when he sped over the cinders in 2.01. Then in the regionals Carpenter broke the Jefferson Field record with 2.03 for the event. At the state meet Carpenter led the rest of the pack home in the very good time of 1.59 flat, which broke a standing twelve year record set by Rhal Arnold of De- troit. The record was previously 1.599 and was set in 1928. Carpenter is a junior and gr-eat things are expected of the ileet-footed star. Coach Bob Dunn went out on a limb and predicted that Carpenter next would establish a new state record. This record is expected to be 1.56, breaking the record time which he himself established this year. VORHEES - MGH 'IUNP . BLAZ O- SPRINTER R. O. I-I. Investigate the opportunities offered through secretarial training given at the Detroit Business University. All graduates of last year's class secured positions readily. Opportunities for men in positions of this kind are practically unlimited. A prominent writer said recently: In recent years, the secretarial pendulum has been swinging in the direction of young men again. The stenographer has been succeeded by an intelligent, well-trained secre- tary. Today's secretary is an accomplished personal assistant who has become an im- portant cog in industrial, financial and technical organizations. More young men are realizing the splendid opportunities which secretarial work offers. More of them are seeking close personal contact with busine-ss leaders and the practical training it offers. They are again claiming the right of succession and the opportunity for promotion which their keen-witted sisters were so quick to grasp. However, many of those meets were lcst by just a few points. Inconsistency was our main troub- le pointed out Coach Arnie Erick- son. At one meet some of the boys would, and some wou1dn't be in swimming form. In the next meet the boys that had scored high in the previous meet were likely to be out of form. Coach Erickson had practically a new team to break ln, there being only four veteran lettermen from last year's team. The remainder of the team was composed of inexpe- rienced men, who had never before swum in competition. Next year's chances look consid- erably brighter, because these men have gained valuable experience, and are sure to be good swimming material. Men to be lost by grad- uation are Co-captains Kenny Van Amberg and Paul Neumann, Al Le- Roy, and Pete Perkins. Compliments of- VIRGO E. One of the flrst things they did was to put Bob Ross up for Student Senate president and al- though he didn't finish in the money, he was very near the top. When the freshman tea came around there was a grand tumout and a good time was had by all. At the freshman party there was a large crowd, but we all had fun with one surprise following the other in rapid succession. Most of us were astonished to hear Mr. Dunn play .the piano and all popular pieces, too. The freshmen were represented at the student talent program by Lu- cille Worester, who danced, and Wlnifred Joslyn who played the pi- ano for her sister. Alice Edwards took part in a panel jury discussion on Juvenile Delinquency and others enjoyed the privilege of going to some of the discussions. Clemens, Coach Webb Aldrich has a legitimate excuse to fall back on. Only one regular, Capt. Bill Thomas, was left from last year's team and most of the few boys who reported for practice were inexperienced - and had to be taught the rudlments of the game. Inconslstency also prevailed here as on the swimming team, not all the boys being in winning form at the same time. Jim McCoy and Nor- man Pringnitz were the only really consistent winners for the Acorns while the doublers just couldn't start clicking. However, next sea- son's results may spell a different story because only Jim McCoy, Jim Hurley, Del Schmitz, and Herbert Ludwig will be lost by graduation, and Mr. Aldrich will have a more experienced team to work with. l A SENIORS' PET CONCEITS Chuck Storeng's cowboy outfit.
