TSVENTY-THREE BOYS ' SPORTS FOOTBALL REVIEW The 1935 football team of Royal Oak coached by John French assrsted by Gerald Jones Mrchlgan State Iron man completed rts most successful season rn several years The team won four' games lost four and tred one wrth the strong Port Huron team The Acorns started the season by defeatrng Mackenzre Hrgh of De trort 14 6 The Acorns were be hrnd untrl the last quarter when a serres of lrne plays scored a touch down the other came by an mter cepted pass The next game was the brggest upset of the Acorns all year they lost to Berkley 7 0 The Pontrac Chleftarns duplicated the Berkley feat by the same score 7 0 The Oaks contrnually lacked the Royal Oak then won the crty trtle by defeatrng St Marys of Royal Oak 15 0 Ozzre Hanson place krcked a field goal from the 20 yard lrne Harry Hallock rntercepted a Parochlal lateral pass for a touch down and lrne plunges netted the other touchdown Hanson krcked the extra pornts Wyandotte fol lowed wrth another defeat 7 0 Roy al Oak outplayed Wyandotte but they farled at the rmportant mo ment Port Huron last years state champ ons followed wrth a 0 0 tre The Oaks were outplayed but the good krckrng of Francrs Oazre Hanson held the Hurons at bav The Gold Derby Game wrth Ferndale came next wrth the Blue and Whrte losrng by a fo ward pass The sco t ,,4-1 .Sr wa 6 0 The next week Royal Oak opposed Hazel Park and won 10 0 Harry Hallock was the chref factor rn the scoring makrne 8 pornts On Thanksgrvrng Day Royal Oak jour n yed to Brrmrngham to wrn 10 'P Hugh O Brren scored the touchdown on a blocked punt whrle Ozzre Hanson krcked the remarnrng pornts Thrs game brought the Lrttle Brown Jug back to Royal Oak The captarn of thrs years team was Hugh OBrren senror who has played regular tackle for three years Some of the outstandrng players thrs year were Harry Hallock an excellent end on both defense and offense Ozzie Hanson end who drd fr fine Job of puntm and place krckrn and who also recerved an hono able mentron on the state football team Brll Mathews the hard charg ng fullback who con trnually hrt the lrne for fine garr.s Royce Norton halfback who could rt get gorng untrl the latter half of the season when he began to make rmpressrve garns off tackle The forward lrne was one of the best seen at Royal Oak rn many years The men graduatrng are Harry Hallock Francrs Hanson Hugh O Brren Chester Mello Robert Bald wrn Norbert Hughes Roder ck Bone and Brll Grrer Althou h los ng these stars John French coach pre drcts a good season next year be cause of the able reserve materral comrng up to nil the gap BASKET BALL R0Yal Oak High school's basket ball qurntet under Coach John J Baldwrn rs agarn launched toward a successful season In the first game of the season the Acorns unleashed crushrng of fense to score at wrll on a veteran Berkley team defeatrng them 35 13 A strong first half attack coupled wrth an unyreldrng zone defense de feated a powerful St Mary s of Or chard Lake outfit Thrs game srnce Orchard Lake rs always corrsrdered one of the Oaks toughest opponents only serve to strengthen Royal Oak fan convrctrons that thrs years cagers are gornff to establrsh them selves as one of the best rn the school s hrstory The first squad rs comprrsed of Captarn Lmdy Albrecht Al Holcomb Roy Fehr Ozzre Hanson Brll Gass Jlm Hallock Harold Sweet Bob Frnch Royce Norton Warren Mc Connell and Duke Dubors Harold Sweet a veteran of two years and Brll Gass a veteran of three years experience wrll be the only losses through graduation and although therr absence wrll be felt a strong reserve team leads root ers to belreve that therr posrtrons can be filled capably Heres best of luck to our bas ket ball team may Coach Baldwin lead them successfully through the IOL1lIlaY1'lCHt Harry Hallock Gosh thrs spa ghettr remrnds me of football Mary Lourse Why'-' Harry Always ten more yards He may be the apple of hrs morn e eye but hes not even appeal rn to me Impatrent Customer Cant you wart on me?
