' Dedication We gratefully dedicate our yearbook to the community of Roxbury. Without their continued support our activities and our senior trip would not have been possible. The people of the town never failed to con- tribute to our class when we needed their help. Now we are glad to have this opportunity to say, Thank you . CJn lit e mori am JOHN B. HEWITT In the summer of 1969, we were suddenly and deeply saddened by the death of Mr. John B. Hewitt, newly elected president of the Board of Education, The memory of his dignity and goodness, and of his service to the community, will long remain in our hearts. We would like to pay tribute to Janice Slauson and Mr. Charles Reed; both have done much for our class. As a very friendly and cooperative night custodian Mr. Reed made more enjoyable many of our evening activities at the school; he was always a help with our little crises. Janice was the sparkplug of our class, and we were all very sorry to see her moveto Canada. We greatly missher humor and antics and hope she will continue to be happy wherever she goes. CHARLES REED Jjrinc pa f s m essaye TO THE CLASS OF 1970 Dear Friends, As you leave these familiar halls to take your rightful place in society 1 have one request; please leave your special mark behind. You are another senior class, and yet, you are a unique group who have endeavored to be different. There is a certain difference, about you that has permeated and stimulated the student body to a greater awareness for the issues involved in education today. You have dared challenge traditions. You have dared face the reality of change. You have dared seek new and untried methods with die objective of improving opportunities for yourselves and others. You have dared face the issues of life squarely. You have endeavored to solve today's problems with today’s methodol- ogy. You have realized that schools are for children. Furthermore, as you have changed and resisted change, you have matured into persons who fully realize that what you are and what you will be is your sole responsibility. We, your friends at school, have only served as a catalyst in die direction of a desired end. You have done the work. Well done! % eed on, my friends, but please - don't ever loose that certain something. Cordially yours, Bruce A. Maynard Mrs. Carmelli; Clerk - Mr. Maynard; Treas. - Esther Snyder. Pres. - H. Well, it looks as though the graduates of 1970 did very well for themselves, with the exception of George Brown and Ralph Needham, who 1 understand have finally been expelled from R. C.S. for having a still in their lockers. Let's see, first in command, we have Marty Finch as principal, and without his devoted secretary Janis Moorehe would be completely lost. Acting as Vice Principal is Wayne Baer, and the way 1 understand it, the only reason he isn't principal is that his secretary, Peggy George, isn't able to read her own shorthand, but hang in there, Peggy, maybe some day you'll be able to write! Well, that's the high command, and what a job they're doing; but the person respon- sible for such good relations between students and the establishment is our beloved David Maplestone who when asked by Principal Finch to give up kangaroo hunting and take a job as student counselor, sold everything except a kangaroo suit, and came a-hopping. Our coaching job is handled by Jim Davies. He didn't have such a good season in blind man's bluff, due to the fact that the two best players fell into the creek and broke their legs. But he expects to have a championship team this season in tic-tac-toe! And who do we have in command of the girls' phys. ed. , none other than our own Mary M., and we're proud to say that any girl in her classes can out-wrestle anyone from the boys' class. Teaching bookkeeping we have Joe I. , who is doing a great job except he doesn't know a debit from a credit, but that doesn't matter as long as they learn to add. For Home Ec. we have Kathy Ballard; you should see the psychedelic cheerleading suitsher class made. Steve Gile is doing a great job in shop. His students built him a computer so he can understand French. Janice Slauson is teaching French and you should hear those kids, maybe you shouldn't! Donald Rowe is teaching English, and I understand that his students are reading and acting out the play HAIR. Lori Taylor is teaching Special Ed. and right now her students are learning how to count sideways. Lela Shultis is teaching Kindergarten and is doing a fine job. The kids know how to read and write and play house! And in Driver Ed. we have Maria S. teach- ing our kids safe driving habits. Her first period class set a new speed record for going around the corner towards the Post Office. Keep up the good work, Maria. With this new age, Principal Finch and Vice Principal Baer decided to start some new classes. The most important class is how to smoke tobacco. For this job we have Jerry M. who comes up here during the winter when business is slow on his tobacco plantation and teaches the kids why they should not take up smoking. Yeah Jerry! Another important class is hypnotism. In this class Harold Davis teaches thekidshow to relax, and study for tests. Ann Kasmer is teaching our students the fun and enjoyment of owning your own hotel or motel. And in Auto Mechanics, Joe Osbornwith all his experience with Falcons is building a 4 wheel drive Falcon with a motor for each wheel. Good luck Joe. And with all his heartbreaking experience Lou Higgins finally decided to teach others where he went wrong, so he's in charge of the H.T.B. A.C. Class . . . (How to Buy a Car). Witha great understanding of kids we have Carol Parnell teaching Psychology. With all her ability to go camping and sleigh riding Kathy Thompson is teaching Out- door Activities. Clyde Bussy is teaching Sex Education and we're proud to say that the girls' attitude towards the boys shows a big improvement. George Slauson gave up the Hell's Angels just so he could teach the kids how to drive motorcycles by standing on the handlebars. We owe the most praise to Paul Ruscio and Gregg Miller. Paul is our best bus driver; he only wrecked 5 buses last year, but this year he's only wrecked 2, which is one below his average, and Gregg is the best janitor this school has, and he’s smart, too! This summer he scraped all the gum off the bot- toms of the desks and now he's selling it to the students in place of paper wads! That's about it. Looks like they all did very well in this big bad world! There is still hope for George and Ralph. Mr. Finch said they could come back to school as soon as they wrote a theme on the evils of alcohol. And in my mind it’s not the cities, nor the parties, nor the hurried trips to hazy places which take the fore, it's the people. The value was not merely in the travel, but rather in the individuals which my travels brought me in contact with, each different, each unique and yet especially important because of the one thing they had in common: they came from an environment foreign to mine. I was given the opportunity to experience a society beyond the superficial sensationalism of newspapers and television. I was actually able to live with the people, and be a part of that society. When I came to your country I was so narrow minded as to believe that there was no other way to live but my own, and you, by merely living your own way, showed me otherwise. That was the reason for, and the result of, my year. 1 was given a position whereby I could broaden my outlook, and come to understand people a little better, by my own, first hand experience, and perhaps help others to do the same. I was lucky, my chance was given to me, but yours may not be. Don't wait, go out and take it. You needn't leave the country, as 1 did, for everyone is different, everyone has a unique message to convey, and everyone needs to express themselves, and learn from others. Talk to a stranger, listen to all people despite religion, color, or nation- ality. Communicate, that's what it's all about. Share ideas, become aware of the world; you can't afford not to. The Bronx, New York Dear Future Seniors, We, the Class of 1970, would like to take this opportunity to express our feelings on spending our last year in Roxbury Central School. This year has sneaked up on us, finding us unprepared for what lies ahead. Being a senior is a some- what scary feeling, because our future must be prepared for and our life plans established. The fact that we will soon be on our own is frightening. We have depended on school to fill our days and plan our agendas, but now, that task will soon be on our shoulders. Therefore, we must become indepen- dent. A big decision must be made before graduation, wheth- er or not to go to college. Our class has been fortunate to have the vocational school to help some of our members learn a trade or profession so they have an idea of what they will do, but college awaits many. Most students think only of the prestige connected with being a senior, and never realize the responsibilities and decisions that go along with it. In your senior year, YOU must make mature decisions that will affect your life for- ever. Becoming a senior comes only too soon; therefore utilize your school years while they last. You will see that they end before you're ready! Sincerely, Class of 1970 X 9 i
