Dedication ■ In appreciation of the help, encouragement, interest and generous support - without which many of our school activities would have been impossible - we, the Senior Class of 1955 do gratefully dedicate this yearbook to the people of Roxbury, New York. The 1955 RECORD Presented by the SENIOR CLASS of ROXBURY CENTRAL SCHOOL Roxbury, New York 1 Board Of Education J.Sveatman, E.Snyder, R.Dorrance, 0.Kelly, R.Ives, D.More, Z.Travis, H.Cartwright DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT Zena R. Dorrance SCHOOL CLERKS Esther Snyder Sarah Snyder SCHOOL TREASURER Mrs. Samuel More 2 Editorial Impossible as it seems to us, it won't be long now before we Seniors are launched on a new and exciting adventure. We shall soon come to the point where the narrow and relatively untrafficked road we have been coasting along on for the past seventeen years or so, opens onto the crowded Thruway of Life - The Big Road where the traffic moves fast, cars must stay in line, and each person must watch out for himself or be wrecked. Once we have taken the big step and turned onto the Thruway, we must keep moving - there is no opportunity to make a U-turn and retrace our path. True, there will be signs along the way, directing us to our final destination, but at the speed at which we are forced to travel on the Big Road, we must watch carefully for the signs, or risk never arriving at our goal. If we keep our eyes on the road ahead, and don't spend our time gazing at the scenery along the way, we can be sure that our goal is attainable and that we shall never become confused in a bypass, waiting In vain to get back into the traffic on the Main Road. NANCY WHITE WAYNE STAHL Alma Mater R.H.S. let us always be loyal; Let us all to your dear name be true. Give our all to your fame and your glory- Our strength and our love to you. Everything had gone all right, so far. The first three classes of the day had passed, and all had been uneventful. English I, English IV, and Social Studies seemed to be my best classes. Fourth period, however, always brought about a sour note into my working days, for this was the period when I was the Study Hall Supervisor. This study hall was made up of most of the refined gentlemen in high school. There were thirty-two of them, to give you the actual number. Each one of the thirty-two knew his place when he was in mj study hall, and he usually sat in it. The final bell rang with an ominous clatter. It sounded as if the end was soon to be, and some days I had almost wished that it was. The bell brought our fine fellows hurrying from all parts of the school where they had gathered to discuss the stratagem for overthrowing my study hall. The seats where they sat had been previously agreed upon by a popular, but secret vote of the students in study hall. A seating diagram had been drawn up by a boy who was a genius in classroom ag- gression. They voted for it, or else! The 'or else' usually meant that they were on my side. The vote was very popular with the students and was secret from me. The seating arrangement placed the boys with good throwing arms in the back of the room. Those who were aces with paper-wads were grouped in the middle; and those more proficient with spit-balls sat painfully close to my desk. The question now was: when would war break out? I was looking for it to start any moment. I Jumped as the door was opened, but it was only a tardy stu- dent entering. This student was an expert with a ruler catapult, so I heard a low mumble as he was instructed as to his strategic position. As for me, all I could do was to sit and wait. As I leaned over to look in one of the lower drawers of the desk, it happened! Their first action was a resounding volley of blackboard erasers which was de- signed exclusively for the purpose of setting up a civilian 'smoke' screen. This maneuver gave them about five minutes until the 'smoke' cleared away, to throw missiles at each other and at disliked objects which adorned the room. When the translucent cloud of chalk dust finally cleared away, I found all the erasers confiscated by the pupils and saw them all, supposedly, hard at work. The only visible articles which would give out any hint of the disturbance, were a rather large white mustache on George Washington, and the absence of Andrew Jackson from his position on the bulletin board. Other than these two items, the place remained an innocent classroom. I could not punish any particular one for this outburst, because most of them were deeply involved in the outburst. I could not punish them all, because I knew there were several completely innocent boys in the room. I warned them to calm down and then I sank back into my seat. I thought that if I gave them enough rope, one of them would, as the proverb states, hang himself. The second wave began with the usual chalk dust screen. Their target for this round seemed to be the waste paper basket which sat near the front of my desk. I heard the crashes of numerous but unknown items as they either dropped into the basket or bounced off the 'blackboard,' which was the front of my desk. By the time the dust had lifted, everything was again in order, and the ex- pected calm had been draped over the classroom. 7 --Continued on page Sk Maintenance First row: Charles Bhultls.Mrs. Wheeler,Mrs. Miller,Ward Roberts Second row: Omar Orlffin,Herbie Van,Lee Todd,Bud Long,Marshall 31auson,Bob Finch Mrs. Miller----Cafeteria Cook Mrs. Wheeler-----—-—------------ - Assistant Cook Robert Finch----------------- -------Bus Driver Omar Griffin (First Semester)--------Bus Driver Bud Long——————Bus Driver and Head Mechanic Ward Roberta-------------Bus Driver and Custodian Charles Shultis—------------------Night Custodian Marshall Slauson---------Bus Driver and Custodian Lee Todd--------------------------------—Custodian Herbert Van Valkenburgh (Second Semester)Bus Driver 8 SENIORS Class Of 1955 First row: Virginia Gaines,Diana Collins,Wayne Stahl,Nancy White,David Munsell, Jeanne Boerem Second row: Joanne Harrlngton,Fern Hlnkley,Helen Cammer,Kenneth Etts,William Decker, Gary DuHond.Elwood Christlan,Gary Hlnkley,Loretta Johnson,Margaret Pekrul,Gall Sears OUR ADVISOR Mr. William A. Then Mr. Crawford, our class advisor, explained the rules of Roxbury High to us. In spite of this however, we had an exciting year. Pour new classmates helped us earn money: Bill Decker, Glnnle Gaines, Paul Mothes, and Mary Odell. Mary and Paul left after only one year here. (Enough was enough. I guess!) Paul was elected class president. Joanne Harrington was a J.V. cheerleader. We gave a Leap Year Dance in February, and later on a play. Then we spent some of our hard- earned money on a riotous trip to Howe Caverns. The Caverns haven't been the same since1 Our attendants at the Junior Prom were Joey Harrington and Gary Hlnkley. In our Sophomore year we gained one new classmate, Karen Fraser, who Is now living In Jersey City. Glnnle was elected president. Elwood Christian was the only Sophomore on the Varsity basketball team. Fern Hlnkley entered her name In the annals of history by coming Into the lab and Inquiring, Where's old Crawford? She was Informed by Mr. Crawford from the back of the room that the old boy was still on deck! We put out a class newspaper with the assistance of Mr. Snyder, our English teacher, and had lots of fun doing It. (We learned all the dirt first, that way!) The girls of the Sophomore class (Ahem! Did you get that, boys?) had a Hobo Day In the spring. This does not consist of acting like bums, as some of you may think, but In doing odd Jobs around town. It was very lucrative; we recommend It. Fern Hlnkley and Wayne Stahl were our Junior Prom attendants and at long last came that milestone In high school life, the ordering of our class rings. We were ready for our third year In Roxbury High. To start our Junior year off right, our class rings arrived. Mr. Crawford gcTE them in the mall, and for the paltry(?!)sum of about twenty dollars apiece, we could possess them. He was mobbed! Wayne was our class president this year and we had a new classmate, Jeanne Boerem, from Long Island. We gave a Spaghetti Supper—what a rat racei--and had the usual bake sales, dances, etc. Joanne and Glnnle were promoted to the Varsity cheerleading squad. We all got nicely tired and sunburned at our class picnic at Gilbert's Lake, but, of course, the big event of the year was the Junior Prom. The theme was An Evening in Paris ; the King and Queen were David Munaell and Nancy White, and the attendants Wayne Stahl and Helen Cammer. This Is It-our Senior year and Wayne was elected president again, and he”Ts also president of the Student Council. We lost two of our favorite classmerabers, Karen Fraser and Virginia Cutting. Another classmate. Peg Pekrul, has quit school and is married. We started our last year at school with the Senior Play, Who Killed Aunt Caroline? , with Gail Sears playing the title role and getting bumped off in the first act. We followed the play with the magazine campaign and stationery sales. We're really hustling to make our Senior Trip one that won't be forgotten (by anybody)! After that, will come graduation, which we're both anticipating and dreading; we want to get on with our lives, but we're going to miss Roxbury Central! Someone, uneducated in classroom military science, shot one of the rather small projectiles, called paperwads, at the health poster on the bulletin board. It landed with an audible crack, and opened the mouth of the small boy pictured thereon. I knew precisely where the small delicately folded piece of paper had come from. I debated with myself, trying to decide whether to take this criminal to the office and the Principal, or to leave him here and warn him against such fool- ish tactics in a place where people are concentrating deeply on their homework. A ripple of stifled giggles went across the room as they saw me hesitate in my action. I was still undecided, but I stood up and walked toward the back of the room. Just as my mind was about made up as to the procedure I would take, the door opened. First to enter the room was the Principal, closely followed by a rather good- looking young man. A complete hush fell upon the classroom. I dismissed my imme- diate thoughts of punishment and promptly walked to the front of the room to meet the principal and his guest. As I found out presently, his guest was our guest and our permanent one at that I He was a new student who had recently moved into our town and who was mak- ing his first appearance at our school today, and in the fourth period study hall, tool It was recommended that he be introduced to the boys, so this little proce- dure was taken care of. The presence of a new boy must have astounded the rest of the fellows in the study hall, because there was no other misbehavior in the twenty minutes remaining of that period. As the final bell rang, I stopped the new lad as he was on his way out and gave him another welcome to the school - something I could do more warmly now than during the study hall. This done, I hastened him to the cafeteria where we pro- ceeded to eat lunch together. While I talked to hira, I told him of the massed disturbance and troublesome students I had had in my room during that fourth period study hall. He, of course, expressed his disbelief and told me that he wouldn't have thought that those fel- lows in my room could have diverted from their lessons long enough to engage in school-house warfare. At this point we finished lunch and we went our separate paths until the aft- ernoon session started. The afternoon, as usual, went along without incident and I drove home at night very much satisfied with the children and myself. The next morning, as on every morning, the English classes and the Social Studies passed successfully, and I was so happy, that the fourth period study hall got well under way before I realized that nothing had happened thus far. I knew better than to say anything about It because a quiet study hall is like a stick of dynamite ready to be touched off. Much to my wonder and surprise, the silence and inactivity lasted the remain- der of the period and on to the end ol two weeks. After such a lapse of time without a disturbance, I became quite curious. I finally drew a student aside and asked about the sudden change to a noiseless study hall. Well, sir, the boy said, That new kid owns a swimming pool, and he told us that a good study hall was the best way he knew to get a free ticket. 5k NEW HOBART PHARMACY Compliments of Main Street LESLIE FURMAN Hobart, New York Phone: 3196 - Roxbury, N.Y.
