gddflflg SATURDAY NIGHT Squeezed between an old wooden barrel and Effdjf the brick wall of the theatre, sat a skinny boy. His big eyes watched all the different people walk up to the ticket box. Nobody saw this little, underfed boy. No one saw the hunger in his eyes. No one knew of the longing in his heart. The crowd was filled with excitement. Boys and girls were laughing and calling to one another. One tiny girl with golden curls cried, nMommy, are we ggglly going to see Roy Rogers?H The tall lady with her, smiled down at the little girl and said, nYes, dear, Roy Rogers is here in person.H It was Saturday night and everyone was happy, everyone except that lonely, little boy. How he wished he might see the famous cowboy, too! His hiding place was in the corner of the building, so he wasn't right out front. That didn't stop him from getting a good view of the people. Micky decided to wait until the show was over. Maybe he might just get a peek at Roy when he left the theatre. Micky knew he wouldn't have to be home early. No one worried about him at home. The crowd dwindled until at last everyone against the cold wall and shivered. It hadn't could barely remember when his family had been clothes and had eaten delicious food. Once he had gone in. Micky sat back always been like this. He happy. Once he had worn nice had gone to the movies. A big tear rolled down his dirty cheek, leaving a streak from his eyes to his chin. How hard he had worked to save his pennies from his paper route. This Saturday night was what he had been thinking of, day and night. And then, last night, M1cky's aunt had discovered his small jug of pennies. He could still remember her satisfied sneer, as she dumped them one by one into her pocketbook. NSo you thought you could keep them from me, did you?H she laughed. Then she turned and limped out of the room. Micky stood up with a start, when he heard the people come out of the theatre. Some came around by the stage door to get a good close look at Roy Rogers. Micky stood still, but his heart beat frantically. At last Roy opened the stage door and came out. As he came toward Micky, he caught a glimpse of the tiny ragged boy. Roy smiled and said, NHi-ya, Pardner,W and went on out to the street. Maybe that would be a minor thing to most people, but to that one, little boy it was the most wonderful thing in the world. M1cky's face lit up with a smile. His tears dried, and he sang on the way home. That was one Saturday night he wou1dn't ever forget! 24 JOAN BROWER
