Mr. Harvick. pictured at left in the new guidance office, plunged diligently into the demanding tasks of his new position. One of the first major problems he encountered was the desperate need for an increased tax rate, and he attacked this with his customary vigor. Below, Assistant Principal Mygatt enjoys the surroundings of his new office. 2 A T R C H S As a result of the complete renovation of the office areas. The fuel collected by sophomores blazes brightly at the pep rally. 6 I he cheerleaders lead the pep rally at the Thursday night bonfire. This first section of the 1969 ROX deals with the story of Homecoming Week. It all began Tuesday, October 15. The high school auditorium was filled to capacity to await the announcement of the Queen. At long last Lynn Metz was named the Varsity Queen. Her Court included Karen Kissaek, Debbie Miller, Cathy Armstrong, and Debbie Davis. The next scheduled event was the parade. This year's parade was one of the biggest and best parades in Roxana High s history. There were 11 floats—all beautifully done by industrious hands of students and sponsors. The Art Club had the winning lloat with the theme “Plaster the Bulldogs.” The parade led the spectators to the pep rally and bonfire. Again, it was one of the most successful Homecoming events in RCHS’s history. The crowd was large and enthusiastic. The cheering was like nothing that was ever heard in the sacred stands of the football field. The spirit carried over into the soc hop that was also well attended. Then came the game. Bv the overwhelming score of 34—6 the Roxana Shells really did Plaster the Bulldogs.” 1 he following night was the Homecoming dance. With the thrill of victory lingering in the air, the dance got underway. Queen Lynn and her Court reigned over the victory celebration which lasted from 8 until 11. Then it was over—the story of Homecoming 1968. 7 Queen Lynn Metz escorted by Steve Adams Miss Karen Kissack escorted by Jim Borchers Miss Cathy Armstrong escorted by Terry Cuebert Miss Debbie Miller escorted by Scott Spillcr Miss Debbie Davis escorted by Jim Durham V 1 Lynn Metz T D H A E N C E like most young men. Handy goes through the ritual of asking his father for the car. Along with the keys comes the warning to be home earlv. I At the Bryan’s house, below, an entirely different ritual is taking place. While awaiting Randy’s arrival. Linda carefully adds the finishing touches to her hair and make-up. Memories of the Coronation Dance arc not restricted to the dance alone; the preparation the boy and girl go through makes up half of the fun. The boy will always remember the agony of inviting that certain girl and the ecstasy of having her accept. After she has been invited, the girl begins preparation by picking out the dress she will wear. The utmost care is taken in her selection, because it is going to be a very special evening. The invitation, the preparation, and the dance will always be remembered by those who shared them. Linda Bryan and Handy McLain agreed to cooperate for these pages which follow a typical Roxana couple throughout a memorable Homecoming evening; one which will be similarly remembered by countless RCHS students and alumni. One of the hazards a girl must encounter before going to the dance is allowing her date to pin on her corsage. Below, Linda holds her breath as Kandy cautiousl) pins the flower to her dress. As the young couple leaves for the dance, the proud mother smiles and wishes them a wonderful evening, then spends the evening as a typical parent anxiously awaiting their safe return from their memorable evening. HILL Master of Art Education, University of Illinois, Art, Theater Practice, Junior Class Sponsor, Art Club. Department Chairman. The visual arts are an activity of the whole organism, an activity which begins in the senses with direct experience of facts, events, and ideas and finally involves the emotions. Until the individual becomes sensitive to experiences and to ideas, until experiences and ideas mean something to him personally, he is not able to think creatively either about himself or about his world. His sensibilities, his values and his attitudes are the key to his intellect. It is the primary function and objective of the visual arts to be directly concerned with the development of these essential components of learning, and it is the Art Department that is concerned with the teaching of these visual arts. Through both Studio and Art Workshop courses, Mr. Hill and Mr. Durham expose their students to many aspects of the visual arts. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Groshong also teach a theater practice class w'hich deals with the visual arts as they relate to the design and construction of scenery. A new part of the Art Department this year is Art Service. The recent acquisition of a number of color slides has made it possible for Mr. Hill and Mr. Durham to go to individual classes to show slides and give lectures on various areas related to art.
