In 1820, on act passed by congress gave roilroods rhe power ro carry possen- gers and ro use sreom locomotives; thus begon one of rhe greoresr eras in rrovel ling, on era rhor now con be found only in railway museums situated around tfie country ond in o few places where inde pendent toilroods still run narrow gouge steam locomotives for vocationers. This era is rhe Age of Sreom Possenger Ser- vice. Once possenger service begon, expon- sion was ropid, Finonciol gionrs vied for roilrood rights, while cities and towns in rhe East were linked by ribbon-like stretch- es of ttock. While troin service in the West became avoibble in 1856, it wasn ' t until 1869, at Promontory, Utoh, that a golden spike wQs driven on May 10th, marking the joining of the Eost and the West by railroad. The building of the railroads octoss the country changed the face of Americo. It enabled people ro live outside the city while commuting bock and fotth from home by troin. The train also morked rhe end of rhe covered wagon trolls os peo- ple could rrovel faster ond safer by trgin. America become mobile. Vost oreos of land were opened ro settlers, and fotms proliferated octoss the country. Cities and towns grew ,up along the train righr of- woys, while farmers and ranchers, able ro move rheir produas ro o market in rhe city, prospered. As more and more people took the train, better and berrer services became ovQiloble ro the possengers. Sleeper cors were added to make several days jour- ney on a rrain more comfortable. With the advent of the Diner cars, people no longer had ro corry rheit food oboord, but were able to eat in the Dining cot. Qub cors ond bars added ro rhe convenience ond comforts roilroods offered its ttavei lers. Trovelling ocross rhe Unired Srotes be- came an exdring and pleasurable five day trip. The londscope rolled efforrlessly by rhe windows on rhe troin, wirh eoch rown along the way marked by a depot sporting o woter rower and the name of the town. Dig cities built beautiful marble and brick edifaces artesting to the great- ness of the sreom giant. America ' s romance wirh rhis genrle gi- onr con be found in rhe music wrirren ocross the yeors. John Henry porrroys the block man on the railroad ortempring ro forsroll mechanization. Casey Jones tells rhe story of the engineer who scorched the tails wirh his engine. Other songs such as Wobosh Connonboll ond The Orange Blossom Special deal wirh individual railroad lines, while Choton- ooga Choo Choo became a million re- cord seller during rhe Dig Oond Ero, Lorer rhe music echoed rhe demise of passenger rrovel when The City of New Orleons sroted: This train ' s gor rhe dissop- peorin ' roilrood blues. The peek of sreom rrovel, ironically, marked rhe beginning of rhe end of sreom passenger travel when the advent of other merhods of rronsporrorion rook irs place. In 1934, an experimenrol diesel unir held on overoge of 77.6 MPH, ond rhe Age of rhe Deisel began. Alrhough the companies arrempted to streamline rhe sreom engine, rhe odvonroges posed by rhe deisel soon prevailed. Also, rhe family cor and rhe olrplone as o means of rrovel improved significantly, furrher eroding roil- rood possenger service. The Age of Sreom passenger rrovel dedined markedly afret World Wor II, re- ploced by a rol-ien service colled Amtroc rhor is run by the governmenr. Todoy oil ocross rhe counrr , in large dries ond smoll towns olike, stand old train depots in a silent tribute to on oge of roilroodirig rhar has ended. No bnger do people srond in long lines that snake around lobbies; no longer do hands and foces busily sell rickets out of rows of ticket windows; no longer do people happily greer each other nor people reorfully soy goodbye on plorforms by the rroins; no longer is heard rhe drown-our All oboord nor rhe quick blosrs on rhe sreom whistle that filled the nights; ond no longer do huge douds of steam tise in the air, nor rhe roils bend under rhe massive wheels carrying people ro their destino- tions. Only o srroy breeze now ond rhen disrurbs rhe dust that settles on the floor, on rhe counrers, and on rhe benches. Silence now fills the space once filled with the noise of people. Gone is the greor Age of Sreom Passenger Service
