EFFORTS BRING SUCCESS Hardworking, energeric and cre- orive ore rhree words Vera Denoir, Pep advisor, uses when she roll ' « obour rhe girls who belong ro Pep They ser high standards for them- selves, ond their efforts were reward- ed by their successes, she stated. Port of the reoson for the successful year was the method by which the girls were chosen. The judging is no longer done in parr by the girls them- selves, but is done by o ponel of three professionol judges ond two teochers. They grade rhe girls on a point system, and high point girls win. This system eliminated many prob- lems of post years and made for bet- ter Student Body representation on the squads. Another positive addition to Pep was a Sophomore Cheerleading Squad. This team proved to be o valuable assistant to Pep. They re- lieved some other squads of total re- sponsibility by supporting Freshmen and Sophomore teams. These teams, in turn, were pleased with the squod ' s oppearonce. Debbie Gately, o three year mem- ber of Pep was chosen os president while Piobin Gurney was Vice Presi- dent and Cloire Kowagishi was secre- tory-treasurer These girls are respon- sible for the scheduling of the groups at various athletic functions. The girls support all major othletic events and OS many minor events as time and schedule permit. Time is o very short commodity for the girls for they must keep all their grades up, they must practice many hours before and after school and on weekends and still op peor Qt their scheduled events. Because of their crowded sched- ule, the only group to participate in competition was the Song leaders. They entered Arroyo, Miss Drill Team USA,, Mt SAC and Disneyland com petitions. They are most pleased with the Disneyland competition os the girls brought bock o 1st place trophy. As in the post years, Pep wos also in charge of FMOC. They coordinated nominations, were in charge of the FMOC assembly, and sponsored the dance held in the gym on February 4 after the game. During half time in the gome with Los Altos, Debbie Ga- tely onnounced Paul Peloso as the winner of Famous Man On Campus. This year ' s squads fulfilled most of the objectives that they ser for them- selves and supported the school in many positive ways, Mrs Benoit concluded. Pep 35
