Dove Mosrers Annimorion George Gullerr Fine Arrs Chairperson, Bond Direcror An era or Rowland ended when Mr Anderson hung up his poinr brush and rerired losr year ofrer reaching orr here for sixteen years The easels, painr rubes, canvases and brushes he used in his program hove been pushed aside by rhe equipment and sers necessary ro produce rhe short animated features that ore rhe end products of the anlmorlon dosses toughr by Dove Masters, rhe teacher who took Mr Anderson ' s place Mr Masters hod taught his animation classes at Rincon Intermediate School for five years, but wos pleoed to move rhe progrom to Rowland in September of ' 83 This move, commented Mr Masters, made my work more credi- ble in the industry, as I am working with older, more morure students. Mr Masters currently teaches five classes of aninmotion. These classes are considered to be top classes and the only high school onimotion program one srep below college-level work. Atari, recognizing rhe quality of his work, donored S4000 of onimorion equipment, the same equipment used in the UCLA onimotion dosses, for the students to use Mr Masters takes oil of his classes very seriously, and students with whom he works must be conscientious and dedicated to rheir work ANIMATION INVADES ROWLAND The work done by Mr Masters in animation has already received recognition throughout the animation industry and the community. Over the post five years 191 awords hove been garnered by rhe work done in his classes. Thirry four of rhere awards come from rhe Academy of Motion Picture Arrs and Science with twenty-seven of the owords added since he come to P,owland The top three awards, however, were won or the Internorion Fesrivol in Europe. One of the features that won the top awards was A Visit to Another Planet which was produced by Chorly Stein and Pvichord Leon. Dove Masters was also the United States representative to the Convention of Student Film Making which took him ro Switzerland in the summer Seeing his srudent ' s work recognized is always a high poinr in Dove Masters reaching. This come obour ogam in March when Two On the Town come to Pvowlond to film a TV program around rhe work he does wirh his students. Mr. Whinnery, Mrs Christiansen, Mr Korns, Mr Philp, and Mr Gardner, and four parents v ho serve on a rotating basis Rowland IS currently in its first yeor of full funding for the progrom, which has FOUR STUDENTS EFFECT SCHOOL SPENDING the porentiol of tunning for three years. Lost yeor rhe school hod a porriolly funded planning year or the end of which a proposol was sent to the state. Acceptance of the proposol insured Rowland of rhe funds necessory to purchase variety of materials and services to improve Rowland ' s curriculum A wide orroy of improvements ot Rowland have been funded by SIP, and many more irems ore tentatively planned for the future. Defore any plans were mode, however, to spend money, exrensive surveys were conducted and pnoriries placed on oreos according to need Up to now the fund has mode possible teacher wortehops ond staff developement programs, while purchases for the clossrooms include compurers, video tape recorders, TV ' s, and video cameras for the use In all oreos of the school SIP also funded rhe purchase and upgroding of bool-s used by the students in a voriery of classes and has funded rhe Ansafone Hotline for student events The plonning ond implementations proved to be a fulltimejob for Jim Fonnakes when he assumed leadership of the program He currently teoches only one doss and administers SIP responsibiliries rhe balance of his rime. Mr Fotinokes felt many times that the job was almost too much for one person to handle, but now he states The progrom is going well Teachers, students, ond parents ore working excellently together. The improvements that hove been made possible ot Row- lond because of the work worthwhile I om looking forward to the continuing improvements of the school, through SIP ,3
