Dove Orr Social Science Chairperson I hoped I would be Ir ' s nice ro be recognized, bur there ' s other people doing good jobs and never get recognized commenred Dovid Orr when asked about his reaction to being chosen Rowland ' s Teacher of the Year for 1982 83. Mr. Orr hos been teaching in the Social Science deportment for 18 years and is currently deportment chairman His classes this year include US History and American Government. Teaching in o high school wos not the gool David Orr hod set for himself He hod always wanted ro enter the world of low as a practicing ortorney He went ro college, majoring in history, with all inrenr of entering low school after college He found, however, rhor he missed the teenagers and rhe academic environment, thus changed his career, becoming a history teocher instead Now I am glad I am doing this and working with young odults. I find if exciting Mr Orr ' s other life outside of school is centered around his family and his hobbies His fomily includes his wife Solly and daughter Carrie, age 18, ond his son Tim, age 14 Travelling with his fomily rake up a great deol of his spore time. One of his most memorable trips wos rwo years ago when rhe entire fomily rook o trip by cor around rhe United Stores It wos the best big trip before rhe children ore all gone. We oil really enjoyed it. In his other spore time he collects stomps, listens ro music, and fantasizes about being a general monoger of a professionol boseboll ream. NICE TO BE RECOGNIZED Mr Orr showers all around him with his wit and his words of wisdom. His commenr on being singled our for on honor I con ' r take it too seriously It doesn ' t mean I ' m better than other teachers. His attitude on each new yeor of teaching; ... to improve my hisrory dosses in some woy and to do a better job in teaching His ideas concerning the qualities necessary ro be o successful teacher: You ' d berrer like people, hove patience, and olwoys be attempting to do a better job ' ' Why David Orr was chosen as Teacher of the Yeor is obvious ro oil who come in contact with him. He is consciencious in oil aspects of his dosses, he is concerned for the srudent ' s welfare; he is firm in his convictions toward educotion, he obviously enjoys working with the students; and he is a person orher people wonr ro be around These qualities elevore Dovid Orr obove the ordinary reocher He is and has been rhe Teacher of rhe Year every year he has rought. 118 Sociol Soence
