The wheel, more thon any orher rool or invenrion, drosticQily olrered the life of moo for oil rime It propelled him our of rhe Srone Age, occomponied him rhroughour his journey post rhe Dork Ages, and conrinues ro serve him yer rodoy. Today one of rhe moin usfes for rhe wheel is os o bose for o body rhor conroins doors ond o sear and moves ropidly up ond down rhe ribbon like roods rhar aissaoss rhe conrinenrs Man colls rhis wonder rhe car. The cor hod irs beginnings in rhe lore 1800 ' s ond quid coughr rhe imoginorion of people oil oround rhe globe. These eorly cars usually were propelled by sreom ond elecrriciry, wirh o few using a new gosolinefueled engine, and rrov elled or speeds of 10 ro 12 MPH. From these eorly beginnings rhe car begon o period of rapid developmenr. The devel opmenr inducted improved engines, ber rer styling, ond inaeosed speed. It wasn ' t long, though, before the gosoline engine become the dominont engine, os it out performed the others. Dy 1920. cors were o comrmon stghr on rhe byways of Anner ico Ar first only the rich and the foshionable were able ro offord cars, bur it wasn ' t long before rhe ordinary people were cosring their eyes on tNs morvelous chor iorr The dream thiese ordinary people hod of owning on outomobile become a reolity when Henry Ford decided thot there wos o market for mossed produced cars, ond in the 1920 ' s starred the first ossembly line ro produce cars. Ir is always inreresring ro regress and look bock over rhe porhs rhor were rokeri rhor gor us ro where we ore rodoy As I look bock over my 18 yeors or Rowlond, I con see many changes in borh rhe school ond rhe srudenrs who orrend Rowland. When Rowland High School was firsr esroblished, our orrendonce boundaries were oil rhe way west ro Hooendo Dlvd , wirh Valley Dlvd on rhe norrh end rhe hills on rhe sourh, ro oil of whar is now rhe Wolnur Volley Unified School Disrricr Thar was a lor of rerrirory ro cover and ir only losred for rwo years. When Wilson High School wos founded, our boundary ro rhe wesr ended or Azuso Avenue The firsr day of school or Rowland High School in Seprember of 1964, I remember rhor rhere were rrees nearly everywhere, The difference was, however, rhor I wos as roll or roller rhon ony of rhose rrees. Today, rhose rrees rise as high as forry feer in rhe oir. The campus was near and orrrocrive in rhose days, and excepr for rhe noonrime lirrer, rhe campus hod o wormrh and beoury uniquely for Rowland srudenrs As foculry, we were generolly a very young sraff The principal wos only 32 years old or rhor rime, while roday ' s principal is . . . well, never mind There are srill several young reochers rhar hove joined rhis reaching sroff, bur as a group, we hove grown olde Inreresringly enough, we have hod only a few reriremenrs from our sroff. Enrollmenr in rhe school hos been like a yo-yo, up and down Rowlond High Schoo srorred wirh 1000 srudenrs and grew ro olmosr 1900 rhe second year. When Wilson High School splir from us, we dropped ro obour 1600 ond grew ogam ro abour 2000 pupils When Wolnur High School was esroblished in 1969, we rhen dropped ro obour 1200 srudenrs and hove grown sreodily ro where we peoked in 1978 or obour 2550 srudenrs ' LL TAKE TODAY Probobly rhe biggesr changes hove roiien place amoung rhe srudenrs In 1964, rhe very firsr day, I remember rooming rhe holls wirh Mrs Oorlond We were borh Assisronr Principols ond in chorge of boys and girls discipline We hod no campus supervisors in rhose days and really didn ' r need ony Our biggesr problems were long hoir on boys (wosn ' r allowed over rhe ears or down ro rhe collar of rhe shirr) ond shorr skirrs on girls (skirrs hod ro rouch rhe floor when o girl was in a kneeling posirion). In rhose doys srudenrs were very cooperorive and mosr orrenrion was spenr on good ocodemics and good exrro-curriculor evenrs (including sporrs, bond, choir, dances, dromo and Wesrern Doys). Inreresringly enough, however, in my opinion, rhe ocodemics of rodoy ore being achieved or greorer heighrhs by more srudenrs rhon in rhose good old doys The era of rebellion and defiance, however, slowly crepr onro rhe RHS compus, OS ir did on all high school campuses, and rhe proliferorion of severol negorive focrors rhen exisred Drugs, more use of alcohol, defiance ro ourhoriry, o rremendous increose in vondolism and many negorive focrors enrered inro school life The losr few years hove seen o porriol rerurn of rhe wholesome kid ' and olso rhe rerurn of more common rhings reenogers should wonr and should wonr ro do Kids will be kids, bur ir ' s nice ro hove o muruol respecr exisrmg ogam The good old doys were good bur I ' ll roke rodoy wirh oil irs neor srudenrs ond sroff members ond rhe challenges rhor, as yer, hoven ' r been mer Rowland High School has hod some bod days, bur has hod many, many more good days wirh severol more yer ro come Whor will happen in rhe furure is as yer unknown, bur reaching our desrinorion, whorever ir is will be exoring ?V.
