LEFIDERS FIDDRESS CLHSSNIHTES Melissa Hodgen - Valedictorion T' Today forty-three young people are graduating and stepping Into a new world. Over the years the meaning of graduation day has varied as much as those who have defined it. Hs for myself, I look at it this way. Our lives are like those of butterflies. Yesterdays are represented by the caterpillar: today by the breaking of our cocaons. and all of our tomorrows by the flights that Ile ahead of us. Like caterpillars, my classmates and I have spent the past twelve years develop- Ing into the talented young adults which are seated before you. But that development did not necessarily come easily. It was a process that had to be token step by step with one doy's lesson bulldlng onthe next. Take for instance our English class. Before writing a six hundred word composition, we learned to wrlte a one hundred word para- graph, and before wrltlng the paragraph, we studied proper sentence structure. This example ls just one of many, and now that we have worked hard at developing our wings we are ready to break free from the familiar cocoon of high school life into the winds of society. LUithin this society each of us possesses the potential to soar to success, and like the beauty of the butterfly which brings joy to people's lives, we too should strive for success In such a way that we add happiness to the lives of others. Only this type of success brings the rewards that are for greater than seven digit savings accounts. Hs someone once sold. money can buy a bed but not sleep. medicine but not health. and amusement but not happiness. Reach for that which con- not be bought, and in this reaching l encourage you who are still students to do your best so that when this Is your gradation day, you will feel that your wings are strong enough to face what lies ahead. To my classmates andthe rest of my audience I chal- lenge you to continue working and learning, for even the strongest wings become weak without proper use, and If someday the winds seem too strong l hope that you will remember these words from a poem by Helen Steiner Rice entitled On the L.Uings of Prayer : Just close your eyes and open your heart Flnd feel your worries and cares deport, Just yield yourself to the Father above Rnd let Him hold you secure in his love - For life on earth grows more involved llJith endless problems that can't be solved - But God only asks us to do our best, Then He will take over and finish the rest. QofGRHDUl'iTlON Sandro Hufford - Salutatorian Seventy-five years ago a young grocery clerk had S372 and an Idea, The man was Bernard H. Kroger. Fifty-six years ago with a horse, a paddy wagon, and S65 capital, a young grocery clerk started selling cheese from store to store. Today we know hlm as J. L, Kraft. No doubt many people thought these two young men were crazy when they learned of their bizarre Ideas, but today we marvel at their success. How did they do it? Simple. They were willing to gamble all they had on a dream they truly believed in. They believed in themselves, and they never gave up. In doing so they gained world-wide fame and fortune. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. These four words will Impact greatly on our lives os they did for both Kroger and Kraft. ln setting Out to conquer our goals we are putting our lives onthe line and that, far mast people, is enough of a motivation. when we realize we are putting thirteen years of education. training. and experience behind us, we realize that there is no turning back, and if we wont happiness and fulflll- ment we will have to work for it. Just like Kroger and Kraft had a dream, many of us have one too. llJhether lt's a dream to be a nurse. secretary, accountant, or the President we will only attain It in one way - by believing In ourselves and our dreams and by putting our trust in God. Success won't come served on a silver platter: It won't be In our graduation giftsg and we can't take an elevator ride to reach It. In order to get It we must be willing to give a little of ourselves. For thirteen years we have had our parents and friends to turn ta when we needed help. Though they will still be backing us all the way, it Is time for us to give up their constant assistance and rely on ourselves, and with the help af God, learn through our own experiences. H little boy.was once asked how he learned to skate. He replied, Oh, by getting up every time I fell down. If the words af that little boy could be adopted as a creed by everyone of us, attaining our goals would be made much simpler. I remember a conversation I had with my mom less that two weeks ago - lt was during the time in which everything needed to be done at once and the end of the year pressure seemed unbearable. I told her that, even though we had less than two weeks to go, it would be nice to just forget it all - to just give up. Hs I recall her answer It made me stop and think. She asked me, fire you going to run away every- time things seem Impossible? l.Uhat do we gain by giving up? Simple - nothing. But what do we have to lose? Everything - our friends, pride ln ourselves, and thirteen years of hard work and experience. To glve up now or ever would be throwing away all that we have worked far. In closing I would like to dedicate this poem to the Class of 1987. l.Uhen things go wrong. as they sometimes will, Lllhen the road you're trudglng seems all uphill. l.Uhen the funds are low. and the debts are high. l,Uhen you want to smile, but you have to sigh. llJhen care is pressing you down a bit - Rest if you must, but don't you quit. Success Is failure turned Inside out. The silver tlnt of the clouds of doubt, Rnd you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar. So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit - lt's when things go wrong that you mustn't quit, Perhaps 75 years from now someone will look back at our class and find that one of us became a Bernard Kroger or J. L, Kraft, lt could be any one of us, but only If we don't quit on ourselves or our dreams.
