Today I know better, and I would be glad to see those hornets in my home country, since I'm very proud of them. What does the word hornet mean to me? American teenagers act basically differ- ent from what German ones do. A hornet usually wears a smile on his face while walk- ing through the halls. A friendly Hello , Hi or How are you doing can be heard quite often. When I look at myself I see no smile, but signs of a bad mood on my face My head is usually turned down, and my eyes look at the floor. My thoughts are not where they should be, but somewhere far away. I takes me about 10 seconds to get out of my dream world and put my thoughts where they belong. Then I need 5 seconds more to realize that somebody said Hi to me, and 5 more seconds to attempt to respond. Finally, after 23 attempts, I was quick enough to respond to a How are you do- ing. I am ready to start the conversation, but the hornet is about finished. A Well, see you later or a Take it easy, buddy, bye can be heard after 10 seconds of talk- ing. I am confused, because I didn't get the chance to say anything. So back to my dream world. Another interesting thing I would like to talk about is the what have you — what can you effect. There are basically three things a guy can do to get the attention of other students (especially girls!): own an 85 Comoro, run the 100 M in under 12 sec- onds, or be good looking. I don't meet any of those requirements, and unfortunately this is also the case in Germany. Teenagers just look for good things they can see with their eyes, instead of taking the risk and searching the inside of a person to find good things. To be honest, I am guilty too, but isn't it easier to fall in love with a Marilyn Monroe than a 200 pound school girl? What I basically would like to say is that I am very glad I made the decision to visit Ross- ville and be part of it for one whole year. I would like to thank my parents, Jim and Janilyn, for all their care and help. Thanks also to my sister, Julia, for being so patient and giving me all the good advice I needed. A special thanks to my brother, Jeff, who shared his room with me. I hope next year you will get more sleep, since there won't be anybody snoring all night long. We had a wonderful time together. Thank you to the Rossville Speech Team and all the other HORNETS I see every day in the halls. I love you all, and I would like to let you know that whenever you gave me a smile you made my day. It was Thursday, and a volleyball night. I stepped into the gym and saw a lot of friendly smiles. I was introduced to the volleyball team first, and later on to many more peo- ple. Names and faces buzzed around in my head, and I thought I'd never know who all those people were. For the first time since I had left home back in Switzerland the day before, I realized that I was in a completely strange country all by myself, not knowing anything or anybody. Worst of all I was hav- ing trouble with the language. Now, some months later, those names and faces that were buzzing in my head have become peo- ple and friends that I don't mix up anymore, and I understand what they are talking about. During the time I spent here, I found a nice little town full of friendly people, a lov- ing family, and many friends. I learned to accept other ways of thinking and acting. I learned a lot about myself. I grew up a great bit, and I am a lot more understanding. I saw that people are the same all over the world, and that everybody has (almost) the same problem, fears, and hopes. What I found is not something better or worse; it's just . . . different. I learned to accept it. There were lots of things I liked; for example, the school, not just because it's Rossville, but the school system. American teenagers are more independent as far as choosing their subjects that the teenagers in Switzerland. We have to study according to a fixed schedule. I like all the pizza places, because they are so different from the ones in my country. I like the way American teenagers are made responsible for their own car, whereas in Switzerland the driving age is 18. I could name many more things, but I don't think there is space enough, so I think I'll write down my few last words. Maybe this is not the right place, but I still would like to thank my American Mom and Dad for taking me into their home, giving me a lot of love and treating me like their own daughter. I would like to thank my sis- ter Angie, for accepting me as her one-year sis and letting me share her friends and family. Thanks also to my teachers for hav- ing a lot of patience with me and teaching me a lot in class, as well as outside of it. I know now that it is possible to have a great relationship with teachers. And finally thanks to my many new and great friends for understanding, helping me out, and let- ting me be a part of Rossville High. Thank you, guys, for all the fun times we shared and even some sad times. I'm glad I got to meet each one of you. I hope you guys will keep in touch, and maybe some day I'll be able to come back, or I'll see one of you knocking at my door, which would just be awesome! se vS-nok. na irv-FFic. {Jxn.iivrS worr UJi'Aa TTn, MS, SP,SC)jC SENIORINFORMATIONSENIORINFORMATION SHELLEY DENISE BEVER Dale Dorothy (Walton) Bever Sunshine 4; Basketball 1 JAMES RICHARD BURKLE John Carolyn (Shultheis) Burkle FFA 1,2,3, Pres. 4; Speech Team 1,2,3,4, NFL 1,2,3,4, Who's Who 3,4, National Hon- or Society 3,4 DENITA JEAN CABLE Jerry Kathleen (Blocher) Cable Sunshine Keygirl 1,2, Treas. 3, Corr. The team wound up 5-9 in dual and triangular meets, two or three wins short of expecta- tions. Senior Tim Mercer led the squad this year, gathering 114 points. With only Tim and Scott Ridgway graduating from the team, hopes are high for 1985. 46 JR. The lady Hornets scored 7 wins and 2 losses in conference play, with an overall record of 13 wins and 10 losses. The volleyball team also won a first place trophy in the Midwest Con- ference Tournament played early in the season. Individually the team was led by Sharma Roth and Amy Dunk in blocking and hitting, by Sheryl McKinley in serving, and by Mimi McGill and Amy Dunk in offensive setting. Shelly Humbarger, T eri Davis, Jerri Need and Angie Schlat- ter contributed to the de- fense against the hard spikes of the opponents. The RHS Jr. High Girls' volleyball teams, under the direction of Coach Carol Hill, finished up their seasons with a combined record of 12 wins and 11 losses. The eighth grade girls were successful in gar- nishing 7 of those wins, while the seventh graders contributed the other 5. Hopes are bright for next year. The freshman basketball team had one of its best records in re- cent years. It finished with a record of 6 wins and 8 losses. The fresh- men also won the Clinton Prairie Freshman Tournament. One of the high lights of the season was the win over West Lafayette, who eventually went on to be the La- fayette City Champs. Nine fresh- men were eventually moved up to Junior Varsity. Highlighted by a three game winning streak over Tri-County, Delphi, and South Newton and exciting one-point victory in the final game of the reg- ular season over West Lafayette, the Hornets had some good games. But tough losses to good Pioneer and Park Tudor teams plus one point losses to Frontier and Sheridan saw the team fall short of its goal of a break-even year. The progress of this season's squad coupled with the return of seven letter winners promises a bright fu- ture. GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL Mgr. Missy Davis, Lana Remaly, Jill Larson, Irwin, Michele Schiery, Terri Davis, Coach Peg Kling. Not pictured, Mimi McGill. Jodi Stair, Amy Dunk, Sharma Roth, Lynn The girls' basketball team will hope for a more victorious season next year. The Hornets know that the experience gained by the play- ing of many sophomores and ju- niors will lead to more victories. The team will lose three Seniors: two-year starter Sharma Roth, guard Lana Remaly, and guard Terri Davis. Leading scorer, Amy Dunk, was named Honorable Mention in the Midwest Confer- ence. Lynn Irwin was the team's leading free throw shooter, and Sharma Roth was the leading re- bounder. The junior varsity girl's basket- ball team can be very proud of its performance this season. Individ- ual accomplishments can be re- sponsible for a very respectable season. Michelle Cooper led the team under the basket with the most rebounds. Other details include: Semi-trailer rigs DON'T pass every- thing on the road; it is possible to exist on less than 10 hours of sleep spread over 3 nights; you might spend as much as $510.00 to feed 86 people in a nice cafeteria; you can fall flat while walking on solid, dry, level ground; and if you wear a pair of mismatched shoes into McDonalds at 5:30 A.M., chances are good that some other band member, from your bus, will wear in an identical pair. Did you know that you could fit 82 instruments, 6 flags, 14 Pom- Pons, luggage for 83, 35 large piz- zas, forks, napkins, and 18 gallons of Coke into the cargo bays of 2 Cardinal busses? Chances are this interesting (but useless!) item of trivia has escaped the attention of most other world travelers, but it is a known fact to the RHS band. ,0SSVI4Lt|ND lien SCHOOL BAND BY STORM . Apple Blossom Festival In addition to discovering trivia, the band members had the oppor- tunity to visit Washington Cathe- dral, all major monuments, Smith- sonian Institute, Arlington Ceme- tery, where we participated in a Wreath-laying ceremony, Iwo Jima Memorial, the FBI Building, the Bu- reau of Printing and Engraving, the Capitol building, and the White House. The marching band participated in the Firefighters Parade, a 2 mile route containing the largest collec- tion of firefighting equipment in the world, and the concert band played in the Concert Band Com- petition at the Shenendoah Con- servatory of Music. The entire trip, which lasted 4 days, was a definite highlight of the 1984-85 schedule for the Ross- ville Band. And by the way, did you know that the Federal Treasury agents really WILL remove the film from your camera for taking an unauthorized photo at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving? 69 PEP CLUB Row 1: Peg Hufford, Jerri Need, Shelly Hum- borger, Angie Schlatter, Phyllis Hodson, Row 2: Jeff Oliver, Ross Goyer, Jeff Need, Dawn Disinger, Shannon McGill, Peggy Ward, Row 3: Bill Kuhns, David Beard, Scott Storz, Lon Whiteaker, Carlene Miller, Mary Esposto, Rhonda Clark, Melissa Whiteaker, Row 4: Jamie Corlson, Marvin Miller, Shayne Fines, Tami Hunt, Jodi Gangwer, Jill Newman, Darcy Ummel, Amy Ferguson, Leslie Draper Row 5: Ben Hopkins, Brad Hin- esley, Craig Remaly, Kane Dolby, Vicki An- derson, Julia Need, Kay Miller, Jennifer Roudebush, Paula Lewis Row 6: Kevin Fm- gerle, Craig Skiles, Rick Roth, Heather Mar- tin, Michele Peters, Holly Gangwer, Kathy Beard, Rashel Rodkey, Lisa Stafford Row 7: Chris Gray, Neal Whitlock, David Dunk, April Dunk, Missy Vinard, Becky Miller, Alisha Harrison Row 8: Jon Mellinger, Jer- emy Van Hoosier, Doug Hodson, Dawn Flo- ra, Angie Phillippo, Toni Draper, Kelli Oliver, Stacy Dunk, Kellie Tijunin, Angie Hufford Row 9: Aaron Nacke, Rex Rothenburger, Joe Trout, Michelle Cooper, Christy Frey, Kathy Fisher, Michele Michael, Lisa John- son, Rhonda Wainscott, Wendy Ridgway Row 10: Mike Rothenberger, Duane Tucker, Lori Johnson, Jenny Green, Mandi Cree, Trena Stanton, Heather Gascho, Melliso Hodson 70 R.H.S. vi SENIORS: Ross Dewese, Stoci Gochenour, David Hodson, Charles Keller, Tim Mc- Clure, Sheryl McKinley, Jane McKinzie, Tim Mercer, Lana Remaly, Dennis Ticen, JU- NIORS: Heather Buntin, Jamie Carlson, Mike Criswell, Amy Dunk, Shana Gochen- our, Ross Goyer, Shari Hackerd, Jill Larson, Shawn Mortm, Neal Mitchell, Jeff Need, Jerri Need, Jeff Oliver, Kevin Oliver, Craig Remaly, Michelle Schiery, Angie Schlatter, Scott Storz, Gary Ward, Todd Welk SOPH- OMORES: Stephanie Bowlin, Debbie Crum, Marna Douglas, Lisa Gochenour, Ben Hop- kins, Michael Hufford, Jennifer Lock, David Seest, Danny Shields, Rick Vinard, Peggy Ward, Pam Gregory, Sean Reynolds FRESH- BAND MEN: Melissa Bowlin, Brendon Bright, Ross Brown, Angie Buntin, Beth Bushfield, Susan Cool, Michelle Cooper, Chad Cree, Car- men Crow, Angie Hufford, Randy Irmeger, Andra Johns, Lisa Johnson, Michele Mi- chael, Julia Need, Brad Oliver, Fred Peter- son, Mike Rothenberger, Rex Rothen- berger, Laura Sloan, Doug Ticen, Kellie Ti- junm, Duane Tucker, Rhonda Wainscott, Brian Good FLAG CORPS: Andrea Gangwer, Tammy Hauser, Kathy Bowyer, Missy Davis, Denise VanHoosier, Janet Daulton GIRLS CORPS: Peg Hufford, Phyllis Hodson, Diannah Burkhalter, Emily Gangwer, Dawn Dismger, Barbara Gangwer SPEECH TEAM OFFICERS: Pres. The RHS Speech Team competed in five regu- lar season meets during the 1984-85 season, bringing home four firsts and one second. For the third year in a row the RHS Speech Team has won both the Sectional and Regional Speech Tournaments. In competition at the State Speech Finals with 67 other schools, the team ranked eleventh with the fifteen RHS students who qualified for those finals. During the speech season our speakers brought home 31 individ- ual first places, 28 seconds and 24 thirds. At the Central Indiana Forensic League Speech Tour- nament held at North Central High School in Indianapolis, the team placed fourth. At that tournament Sheryl McKinley qualified for the National Speech Finals held in Eau Claire, Wis- consin in June. Sheryl will compete in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. She is the sixth RHS student to qualify for the National Speech Finals in the past ten years. Dennis Ticen also qualified for a national speech tournament this summer. He will be competing in the national finals of the Sons of the American Revolution Oratorical Contest held in Louisville, Kentucky. Dennis wrote a speech about a dream that grew out of the American Revolution ... a love and respect for the basic tenets on which our country thrives. 73 JR. The student council is in charge of convoca- tions, the Coke machine, and Homecoming. Along with these re- sponsibilities, the student council has made it possible for the stu- dents to use the new commons area and has purchased a stereo for use in the lunch room. The house is al- most finished when Newton runs out of money and almosf loses everything to a greedy banker, Mr. Prescott.
