This year we decided to change the book a little. The first part is all informal pictures of school happenings. The theme, Taking a Closer Look , is em- phasized more in this first section. The last section is the more formal or the group section. It is our hope that you receive as much pleasure from this book as we had in compiling it! 3 Taking a Closer Look In taking a closer look at Rossville High School we see many things. The elementary students are very proud of their new play- ground equipment purchased with the proceeds from the Centennial. They play on these in bad weather. Also the high school students are proud to present their new report card system. Each six weeks period they get a report card which we can dispose of when we are finished with it. 4 at Rossuille High School Can you guess who these A Closer Look at Reactions “President Boner Reaction to a Regional Victory The Leader Women’s Lib?? Through these last twelve years, we have been taught much by some great, dedicated teachers. It is they who have prepared us for this occasion tonight—where each class member shall take a step forward. We now are leaving an important part of our lives, but it shall not be for- gotten. These twelve more intensive years have been a preparation for oc- cupations and professions. Constant references to the knowledge we have learned will be necessary in order to make progress. We will always remem- ber and thank those to whom we owe so much for making this fine school possible. Our experiences in school have developed some very necessary attributes. One of these is self-discipline. Many times as students we have wondered why we had to take certain subjects. We could not see the purpose of them, but we had to exercise self-discipline in order to pass. In fact, we have had to learn self-discipline all through school in order to obey school and teacher rules. Otherwise, we wouldn't be graduating tonight. Another attribute of success is ambition. Without the desire to accom- plish--nothing is ever undertaken--let alone realized. The basketball boys wouldn't have gotten as far as they did without the will and ambition to win. We had to want to graduate. Still another attribute is determination. It is easy to do just what is nec- essary to get by, but we have to sacrifice in order to reach our goals. De- termination enables us to produce sustained achievement, academic or otherwise. Our task now is to strive for social justice, a cleaner environment, and a new, better morality. Henry Thoreau once said, Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something. We should not simply become an eight-hour worker, we should put our hearts into it and really do an honest day's work. This is our end, our aim, our purpose. The methods for achieving an end are merely suggestions to be finally accepted or rejected according to whether they work well or not. As Theodore Roosevelt said, In the long fight for righteousness, the watchword for all of us is give and be given. It is of little matter whether one man fails or succeeds; the cause shall not fail, for it is the cause of mankind. We now have a new world to conquer, a new role in life to lead. This challenge must not go unanswered. To conquer this new world will require vision, clear thinking, and resolution to keep hammering away at super- stition, ignorance, hate, and greed, until they are replaced with understand- ing, cooperation, and brotherly love. Toward that end we must dedicate our resources unlimited. If we are able to do this, and help make a better community by our good citizenship, then we truly have only just begun. 46 Look at the Future Salutatorian Address High School Faculty, Parents, and Friends: I am honored to have the privilege to give the welcoming address at the 1971 Ross ville High School Commencement exercises. As our high school years are coming to an end, we want to express our gratitude to each of you for the important part that you have played in helping us reach for our diploma. It's amazing what we have accomplished in eighteen years, yet we wouldn't have been able to advance this far so successfully without each of you 120% behind us. An old Chinese proverb says: Behind an able man there are always other able men. Our able men that have been the foun- dation supporting us are teachers, parents, relatives, and friends. When we got outselves into problems you were there. You were the ones that pulled us out. You have helped to make us what we are today. A potter takes a mass of clay and forms it into a beautiful vase. You have taken our minds that were just like that shapeless lump of clay and you have molded our characters. We hope that you are proud of the product. As we go on in life, may we continue to carry nothing but your pride and love with us. The entire Rossville community merits an expression of appreciation from the senior class. When I came to Rossville five years ago, I left a wealthier neighborhood and a larger school. But in the friendly surroundings of Rossville I have discovered a whole community of millionaires. Not millionaires with a dollar sign attached, but millionaires with spirit and interest in their community. Where is it that opposing basketball teams get rattled at the thunder of adult fans ? Where is it that returning regional fans are greeted by the President of the United States in Tom Bonebrake ? Where is it that after bowing to the State Basketball champs a proud coach can truthfully say, We are the Champs! Ladies and Gentlemen, no where but in this wonderful community are such precious moments possible ! Several of us are focusing our thoughts on a new frontier involving either the excitement of college life or a new job. Plans for further education range from Purdue to Indiana State to Idaho to Vocational School. Others of us plan to remain near Rossville with jobs ranging from secretaries to factory workers to farmers. Each of us has his own plans that head in sixty- five different directions. We won't be a student of Rossville High School anymore. We won't be walking the halls between classes, or sitting and chatting with friends at lunch in the multi-purpose room. We won't be the high school students that are cheering the Hornets on. All we have now are the delightful mem- ories to go into the world with. There is a threshold we are about to cross and it is pleasant to take one last look before we turn our thoughts in an- other direction and cross that threshold. And now we see our parents in a new light, not as the people who pushed us to get our work done, but as the people who strove and are still striving to make good, solid American citizens of us. Our outlook on home has changed. No longer will home be the place where we get off the school bus. Some of us will be coming home only on weekends or for holidays. Though we may not be home every day our thought will still cling to home. Pliny once said, Home is where the heart is. Our hearts will remain with our parents, Rossville High School, and this outstanding Rossville community. May graduation this evening be remembered as the date each member of our senior class set out to conquer new goals. As we proceed let us pre- serve our open minds always believing that we can do anything, if we set our minds to it. A person that places limits on his goals in life is locking a pair of handcuffs on himself and throwing away the key. As George Bernard Shaw stated, Some men see things as they are and say 'Why?' I dream things that never were and say 'Why not? ' May receiving our diploma tonight teach us to say 'Why not?' In August of 1959 three groups of first graders excitedly and timidly entered the doors of Pyrmont, Owen, and Rossville. We were finally brought together in the 5th grade at Owen. In April of our 6th grade, the Palm Sunday Tornado blew us to the churches in Rossville to finish the 6th grade. In our Freshmen year we ordered our maroon class sweaters, and when we were Sophomores we got our class rings. During our Junior year we, like former juniors, sold magazines. We were able to set a new rec- ord for selling over $4,000.00 of magazines. Also we sponsored the concession stands at the ballgames. Most of the money from these projects went for the Prom. We started raising money for our senior trip during the centennial. During the year we had paper drives monthly and sponsored the 2nd Annual Tricycle Race and a fish fry. May 16 will be the close of the 12 happy, fun-filled years we all enjoyed together. 63 SITTING: Joanne Cottrell, Secretary; and Sharon Fry, Treasurer.
