To make sure the technicians are correctly carrying on their work, they aj.e required to attend con- ferences conducted by the Chief Technician: Our technicians make calculations to try to make sure that we astronauts find the right orbitoflife. Constantly, the are checking, prodding, helping, and watching. They check and recheck their calculations by means of tests, and many times after school hours the teachers must check papers for errors. For this service they don't receive any extra pay, but still they stick to their work. They prod with the right encouraging words or a distinctive pat on the shoulder. Watching us as we grow and mature, they try to help us complete the first stage without a misfire. Our teachers have spent years of preparation in college and must use all of their knowledge and facilities to make sure we are safely launched so that we will be able to hold our own in society. We may never return tojour launching pad, but we will always benefit from the guidance received from our technicians and counselors.
