SUNSHINE 4 STUDENT COUNCIL Improvements at Rossville High School FACULTY From the control tower Mr. Frazee, our superintendent and Chief Technician, and Mr. Wolf, his assistant, give advice and counsel to the technicians, our teachers. To make sure the technicians are correctly carrying on their work, they aj.e required to attend con- ferences conducted by the Chief Technician: Our technicians make calculations to try to make sure that we astronauts find the right orbitoflife. Constantly, the are checking, prodding, helping, and watching. They check and recheck their calculations by means of tests, and many times after school hours the teachers must check papers for errors. For this service they don't receive any extra pay, but still they stick to their work. They prod with the right encouraging words or a distinctive pat on the shoulder. Watching us as we grow and mature, they try to help us complete the first stage without a misfire. Our teachers have spent years of preparation in college and must use all of their knowledge and facilities to make sure we are safely launched so that we will be able to hold our own in society. We may never return tojour launching pad, but we will always benefit from the guidance received from our technicians and counselors. SENIORS For the seniors, the first few weeks of school afts'sed quickly like the first stages of a rocket blasting off from Cape Canaveral. As the year's activities got underway, the passing of the weeks slowed down some but kept moving at a smooth pacoj| When spring arrived, the seniors began day-dreaming, and timeipassed even more slowly. However, the night of graduation finally arrived and they received their diplomas for the completion of one orbit” of education with an A-okay rating. There have been many activities for the Senior Class of 1963 to remember: the dances they sponsored when they were freshmen; the skating party at Purdue life sophomore year; the first Junior- Senior Prom at Rossville, and all the work of decorating for it; the junior paper drive; and the many variations of painted senior cords. Many seniors are going on to college or some type of additional training. A few will join a branch of the Armed Forces. Some will enter into their chosen vocation immediately following graduation. Whatever they do; in a few years they will look back with a smile and remember tne fun they had. xms MRS. CRUM Sponsor MR. Junior Trip Have you ever taken a 600 mile trip in one day with time for a lot of sightseeing? Well that is exactly what the Juniors did in May 1962. They left at 2:45 a.m. on a Friday with very few kids having had sleep. Their exact destination was Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, Michi- gan. The Juniors went through a Ford plant and a steel mill in the afternoon, if they wanted to. Before they started home they ate and most of the girls went shopping. The trip home was rather quiet with almost everyone getting a little sleep. They arrived in Rossville at 11:45 p.m. Friday night a tired but happy group. 33 The boys take a short snooze. Mr. Koontz sleeps while Mr. Yochem keeps an eye on the Juniors. The Juniors drove their own bus, not really. They are the enthusiastic underclassmen. Jfiis generation will be- come the future astronauts and leaders of our country. Having passed the first stage, grade school these children have moved into the second stage. They are living the space age where sci- ence and mathematics are becoming more important. Graduating from high school, when technicians nd mathematicians will be in greater demand, these students will have greater job opportunities. But there is also a less serious aside. These students take an active interest in ball games, class parties, clubs, organizations, and various other activities. Their enthusiasm and energy enriches Rossville High School. The second stage is very important to these children. It is the time when they are preparing for the third stage, adult life. This period determines how successful they will be in the adult stage. But with correct guidance and perseverance they will be able to make their life orbit successful. Here they learn the fundamentals for each orbit of their school life . This basic training consists of preparing for more advanced learning and social development. They learn to play with others and to appreciate music, art, and good reading. Each teacher provides new inspirations for achievement which adds thrust to lift them to higher levels of learning and adventure. In this phase of their flight, the varied curriculum gives them a wide scope of devel- opment in both physical and riiental skills. As they complete each school year they have advanced to an outer level in which they have never been before. Each level is another challenge to them. Each orbit brings new experiences and more hard work and fun. Owen Teachers JAMES MONTGOMERY Central Normal College, B.S., Indiana Uni- versity, Purdue University, M.S., Princi- pal . Jme In the past few years Rossville has expanded its athletic activities. Under the leadership of Mr . Robertson, Rossville has become more prominent in baseball, track, and cross country. Yet, basketball remains the main stage of the sports department. Those participating learn the importance of good sportsmanship--a quality necessary now and later. They learn the importance of teamwork and co-operation. These boys also have the opportunity to meet new and interesting people. Mr. Koontz, our athletic director and basketball coach, and Mr. Robertson supervise the countdown of the sports activities. ActiviU are an important factor in the successful completion of an indjfnual's flight. The aim of the Sunshine Society is helpfulrujs.-rand kindness to others. The Band and Chorus each use team vwjrk to produce harmony and enjoyment. The Pep Club acts as a booster rocket for the basket- ball boys. High Spot, stressing school spirit; being strictly im- partial; and maintaining the properljpfonce of the past, the present, and the future, is the voice of our school. Thinking of the future, the Science Club is always exploring the unknown. Student Council, the central control of all student activities, guides and advises us on our orbital flights. g Latin Club the students explore a new frontier of language. The F .F .A. work together to learn more about farming. The F.H.A. work together to learn how to maintain a home. If a rocket is tijjja ach its goal, all functions must work together perfectly. Likewise, members of a organization strive together to obtain success and enjoyment.
