in which Jh Smou oh Tiowxlk Hujk School go a-fishing in the stream of 96 The oldest building in use in the Rossville Consolidated School District, Rossville, Indiana. Time is but the stream I go a- fishing in. --Henry David Thoreau Larry Andrew, assistant editor Larry Rodkey, business manager, Don Hufford, editor This edition of the LARS attempts to mirror the 1961 segment of time as it records the growing pains of Rossville Consolidated School District. A rural school area (no town can boast a thousand inhabitants), this consolidation of educational facilities has been one of natural evolution. To paraphrase Thoreau’s quote, Rossville Consolidated School District is a stream so small that it doesn’t deserve the name of a creek, just Campbell’s Run. When Owen consolidated its schools, it chose, as Rossville had. the environs of this small stream. So the first division of the book fldnuMdwtiori is prefaced by a picture of Owen’s veteran principal and the school he has served for thirty-one years out of his total tenure of forty-seven. Smou and Udmimmi use the scenic beauty of Clay Township to introduce their sections. Guuk return to the banks of Campbell's Run with a nostalgic scene, go upstream to Langston’s pit in Owen. utilize the ball diamond framed by a backdrop of trees on the banks of Campbell's Run. And now let us join the editors as they have gone a-fishing. To those who treasure the memories of days spent along Campbell’s Run, the catch will truly be significant. Me tduujk A Mfude o( A 'TtoMm, Mitk wuffOiiaUott Gene Milner, who rides from Owen Township seems to be headed for the bus again. Too many girls? --well, maybe not such a big whale. Rossville Consol- idation has fifteen routes, the longest of which is thirty- three miles and the shortest, seven. However, no student travels longer than fifty-five minutes on a bus. Of the fif- teen bus drivers in the Conso- lidation, Clarence Malaska is the veteran, having driven for seventeen years. Although our transportation problem evoked thoughtful consider- ation on the part of the Board, it wasn’t nearly so serious as that of most consolidations. . Halfred Mortsolf. Iotl Catron, Harm How We tftwe I Su emtmied Yes, you were one of 771 when you enrolled in Ross- ville Consolidated School District on August 26. Whether eager, indifferent, or actually opposed to the idea, you did come. You have found, if you were one of the 371 in the junior and senior high school, that the consolidation still is in the process of change. At least, now we have our own superintendent, Mr. Charles D. Frazee. Hired as principal for the school term 1959-1960, Mr. Frazee in the interim completed work for his superintendent’s license. As the first superintendent of Rossville Consolidated School Dis- trict, Mr. Frazee combines with this office that of principal. His duties are like the statement at the close of a sale bill - “too numerous to mention.” Though high school girls serve as office assistants, the pose of Mr. Frazee typing is a fa- miliar one. Too, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Wolf assist with attendance and discipline in the junior and senior high respectively. Mr. Montgomery operates from his class room, but Mr. Wolf found a neglected corner and transformed it into an office. As vocational instructor Mr. Wolf moved his class- room to the southwest corner basement room of the west building. His office is the south half of the small room to the east. Oh yes, the art room is still there (and at Christ- mas it looked like Santa's work shop.) Though his office is small and not centrally located, Mr. Wolf handles all high school attendance there as the lower picture indicates. Mr. Wolf is also guidance director for the junior and senior high school. Shifting all fifth and sixth grade students of the Con- solidation to Owen and centralizing all the seventh and eighth grades at Rossville necessitated the redistribution of library books. Mrs. Rodkey has had a busy year, sorting, mending, cataloging, and shelving these books. Conversion of the ramp between the two buildings into an audio-visual center has been part of the library’s development. Compliments of SKILES PURE OIL Rossville, Indiana MILNER FOOD MARKET Quality Groceries, Meats, and Produce Sedalia, Indiana Yes, there were snarls and tangles in the lines of Consolidation—one such was the most advantageous utilization of the buildings owned by the townships. Many taxpayers recall the meeting scheduled by the Board early in 1961 to propose the abandonment of Owasco and the transfer of fifth and sixth grade stu- dents of the three townships to Owen. This plan, as a consequence, called for three elementary schools, grades 1-4, one in each township. The newest of these structures is in Ross Township, dedicated in 1956. Junior High patrol boys, who have assigned posts at street intersections each morning and evening, provide safety for these grade school youngsters. Pictured above is the Pyrmont grade school building, Rossville grade school building, and the three safety patrol boys--Vernon Hitch, David Dyer, and Steve Fines. The Board of Education oftheRossville Consolidated Schools has announced the employing of Evan E. McFee of Kokomo to fill the position as vocational ag teacher at Rossville High School. McFee will succeed Charles Wolf, who has resigned effective January 27 to attend a Guidance Institute at Purdue University, according to Charles Frazee, Rossville school superintendent. The new vo-ag teacher will start his duties with the opening of the second semester of school on January 30. He is a graduate of a Fayette County high school and prior to entering Purdue University, served two years in the United States armed forces. He graduated from Purdue in January of 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. The 29 year old teacher has been associated with several insurance companies during the past several years. Julia Thomas ranked third in County DAR competition. R. W. REAGAN SON School Bus Sales and Repair Lebanon, Indiana Compliments of DIETZEN’S Bakers of Holsum Sof-twist Bread Kokomo, Indiana AdMutMiatiott, We seniors will re- member our days at our respective grade schools and will relive many ex- periences that havetaken place in the last eventful twelve years. The leading characters in most of these reminiscent thoughts will be the teachers who have guided us, helped us, and reprimanded us, trying to shape us into responsible citizens. Many of these teach- ers throughout the consoli- dation once, the same as we, were grade school stu- dents playing along Camp- bell’s Run, junior high boys and girls extremely excited at the thoughts of growing up, green freshmen trying to locate the matli room, and finally Rossville sen- iors with many high ambi- tions and goals. After graduation from R.H.S. or various other high schools, these teachers branched into various fields of education. Some started their teach- ing careers with us; others were extremely exper- ienced when they graced our halls and classrooms. The class of 1961 would truly like to thank the administration, faculty, and other school personnel, each of whom has given much time and effort in guiding us. Edited by, Bonnie Lee and Julia Thomas. School 'Bo d SitfeMtuidefU'i 0 jfi yfdMuiMwtiuz Gwtrfi No doubt there are many moments in the lives of the administrators of the school—from the busiest School Board official to the youngest Student Council member--when they would like to lock the doors and post a sign--“Gone Fishin”’, but the problems must be faced and solutions reached. Helen Montgomery serves as Girl Friday in the Consolidation office where the School Board holds its regular meetings. Stu- dents assist Mr. Frazee in the superintendent’s office; and they, like him, would appreciate the installation of an intercom or escalator. Student Council--while it doesn’t worry about taxes, wrecked busses, or teacher contracts—does arrange the student calendar and is working on the purchase of an intercom. Vk School JjJimif The current school year has been the busiest ever for the school library and library staff. There were more students with a yen for reading. Book collections from the various schools of the Consolidation had to be sorted and redistributed. An audiovisual center for the storage and display of material was developed. The staff of students assists with the accessioning and charg- ing of books. Timely displays on the peg board create interest in the library program. Truly it can be said at Rossville that the library is the heart of the school. LIBRA RIANS--Carole Bratton, Nancy Roth, Ruth Wagner, Nancy Gochenour, Joyce Lipp, Stanley Holsinger. For some these treks were fun; for others, work. And knowing a Senior’s tendency to be- lieve all school experienc- Ies were work, it is not surprising that Seniors j would need a picture of Owasco Rest Park for a division page. We have walked through these “Halls of Ivy’’ many times during the past twelve years. We have lost classmates; we have gained classmates. Together we have struggled and have stood to reach our goal; together we have had enjoyments and have created happy memories. In the years ahead we will have many Senior ac- tivities to remember. The presidental preference election, with all its cam- paigning, that our govern- ment class sponsored. The “great debate” to inform the student body about the qualifications of both can- didates. We will remem- ber our play and our paper drive on which everyone worked vigorously. We also sponsored a magazine drive that left its mark on our community. And be- cause we reached our goal, we were privileged to spon- sor a sock hop in the gym. Yes, we Seniors reading this in years 'to come, will think back nos- talgically on old R.H.S. UtUvtAmnm We are the aspiring under- classmen. Some of us have been at Rossville two or three years while others of us are experiencing the adjustment of changing schools. However, we shareacommongoal-- that of graduation. Together we have studied at Rossville and some of us have even learned to appreciate scholarship. Too, we have played together—lessons, homework, and responsibility forgotten. The old, picturesque dam at Pyrmont is a favorite rendezvous when the gang wants to have fun after school in the winter. Just as students are rated in their class work, the skaters range from good, or mediocre to poor, or won’t-even-try. But most of us learn to try and yet not always succeed--but we also learn to try again. Life for an underclassmen here at Rossville is a blending of seriousness and fun, work and play, and even saddness and happiness. It is days like these that we will treasure when we finally become a high school graduate. Gwk SckooU A consolidation of the grade schools, housed in three separate communi- ties, is somewhat difficult to achieve. Yet, with a singleness of supervision and with students sharing a common background such as is shown in the view of Campbell's Run the grades become an integral part of the Rossville Consolidated School District. There are always problems in a new consolidation, but like Campbell’s Run after a heavy rain just give it time and things will return to normal. Readin’, 'ritin , and 'rithmetic are the essen- tials taught in the Rossville Consolidated Grade Schools. These three R’s form the foundation which prepares the child for more advanced learning and so- cial development, for he learns to play with others and to appreciate music, art, and good reading. Grade school aims to stim- ulate the child’s interest in learning. Second graders at Rossville will long re- member the day when Eugene Barton discovered a Praying Mantis cocoon hatching in his desk. Other units of the grade consoli- dation can, no doubt, cite similar incidents. Edited by Gary Gray, Glenna Koble, Jerry Hur- ley, Carroll Unger, Carole Bratton, Linda Terrell. Once in 1958 instead of gently lapping its banks, by mustering its forces, it became a torrent of seeth- ing water which ravaged the land. Our schools too have joined forces by con- solidation. Many groups have thronged together to share in many activities. We judge stock. This year our F.F.A. boys went to Virginia to win first place in a national contest. We edit. Our High Spot staff has become a member of the Indiana High School Press Association. We enjoy music. Our music department provides entertainment at ball games and convocations. We have student rep- resentatives. Besides working with students and teachers, our Student Council heads the intercom project. We spread sunshine. Our Sunshine girls help others by sending clothing, toys, and food to needy families. We explore the world of science. Our Science Club sponsors the annual Science Fair. We raise our voices in unison. Our newly formed Pep Club in white sweaters and red gloves adds color to basketball games. We even try to van- quish Caesar. At least our Latin Club banquet makes up for a little of the suffering. Edited by Gayle Miller and Danny Leazenby. Big in respect to numbers--45 members--and little in respect to the size of the members since about two thirds of the band is junior high students. The officers are Bob Mohler, President; Phyllis Wenger, Vice-President; Marsha Jones, Secretary; and Bonnie Lee, Treasurer. The band entertains between halves at ball games by creating and performing what might be called contemporary musical skits. It also plays for many of our convocations. The various activities of this organization have been participating in the State Fair, Sept. 1; Purdue Band Day, Sept. 24; Veteran’s Day, Nov 9; County Band Festival, March 17; the Spring Program, May 5; and the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at which Marsha Jones, Bonnie Lee, Phyllis Wenger, Connie Good, and John Wenger participated. There are 95 honorable members. Latin Club sponsors the East- er Convocation. The Pledges. Janice Collins, General Chairman, makes plans for the banquet. Inevitably initiation comes. Wide-eyed pledges are left in the hands of calloused second year Latin students, who are still haunted by their initiation, but it’s all in fun. This year’s pledges retraced Caesar’s footsteps from Rome to the Rubicon, prior to a wiener roast at Mrs. Rodkey’s home. Every spring the Latin Club Banquet gives recompense for all the hard work. The banquet follows a prescribed theme with all of the tables individually and ingeniously decorated. The entertainment is both home and professional talent. But best of all, the food is delicious. Rossville, Indiana JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES Phyllis Wenger Ralph Calvert Most of our sporting activities that are centered around Campbell's Run are individual ones, but as we enter high school, we learn the value of team play. Of course, basketball is king, but Rossville also participates in cross coun- try, track, and baseball. Coach Buck takes great pride in the development of the player and the pro- per school spirit. He ex- pects his teams to face stiff competition and win their share of the games. Nothing makes Mr. Robertson happier than to see a boy give his “all” to track, cross country, or baseball. Track under his tutelage has won a place in the sun at Rossville. The seventh and eighth grade basketeers, best of the consolidated grade school corporation, work under Mr. Stahly. Perhaps these sports activities are the most ef- fective means of consolida- tion as interest generated in these activities brings many fans together.
