The History 0f W. W. Boss High School The first school in Fremont, Ohio, was erected in 1816 on the site where Ross High is now. lt was established as Fremont High School in 1863. In 1867 the first graduation took place with one graduate. This graduate originated the idea of a class motto. lt was, God helps those who help them- selves. Senior class colors began in 1888. Red, white, and blue were the very first. Officers for the senior class were instituted with the class of 1893. Until 1896 we had never played football. Our first game was here with Fostoria in which Fremont defeated Fostoria with a score of 28 to O. The first high school newspaper was published in 1898. It was named The Beta Record, but due to such few subscriptions, failed in a short time. Two events took place in the year 1905. The first was the origination of class flowers and the second was the first senior class play. The first flower for the senior class was the red rose and the first play production was The Courtship of Miles Standish. ln 1907 Fremont High School was placed on the accredited list of the North Central Association of Colleges. It was one of the first high schools in the state to offer a four year course instead of only a two year. The first band was formed in 1913 with forty members. The Croghan was the name of the first annual which was published in 1917. The first successful high school newspaper, The Croghan Chatter, was first published in 1926. In 1931, Fremont High School became W. W. Ross High School. William Wallace Ross was the superintendent and a teacher at Ross from 1864 until 1906, the year in which he died. lt is now 1958 as this year's class leaves. This will always be a memorable year, not only for the graduates but also for the people of Fremont. lt is the year in which the old W. W. Ross produces its last graduating class and steps back, ,as a high school, into the path of memories to give way to a new, modern structure. It is our privilege, the seniors of 1958, to be this last class. Ross High has a history of which it can be proud and to us it will always stand as a symbol of the foundation of our success in life.
