The week com- menced on Monday when students walked into school to find banners and streamers lining the halls. Clubs on campus de- signed all the posters to decorate the school. Noontime activities included Best in Bed , an obstacle course, a life- saver pass, tricycle race. egg drop. and a pep rally on Friday to complete the week's events. Friends could send each other homecoming grams to brighten their spir- its. Then on Friday night, the Panthers came out to play the El Monte Lions and emerged victorious with a score of 8-7. At half time, the Homecoming queen was an- nounced and Miss Martha Espinoza was crowned by former I984 queen Cindy Young. The floats created by each gradu- ating class paraded by with the freshman float representing America and the Statue of Liberty winning first prize. Fireworks ended the halftime activities as the queen and her court were seated on the field to watch the remainder of the game. Follow- ing the game was the annual Homecoming dance which showed a good turnout from students and alumni. l. Rosemead students show their pride. 2. Candy and Anthony wonder who will win the battle. 3. Princesses enjoy the activities during lunchtime. 4!Homecoming Week ' l A warm welcome from the class of '86, Homecoming activities keep students physically fit. Rosemead students show their interest in activities. Participants relive their childhood days. HCMECQMING . WEEK Ina Homecoming Week! RIVALRY GAME On October 25th Rosemead played one of its traditional rivals. Arroyo High School. Over the years Rosemead had won I5 games out of 26 from Arroyo High School in this rivalry series. This years game featured Arroyo. a team that was not only undefeat- ed in six games but ranked in the top three teams in the local area. Rosemead's team had one week earlier beaten El Monte and were hoping for an upset of Arroyo. The Panther defense played well forcing an Arroyo fumble early in the game but the offense was unable to score and with only one minute Arroyo scored on a touchdown pass to lead at the half 7 to 0. Coming out in the second half. the teams both stymied each other and were unable to score. Rose- mead's defense played superbly. consistent- ly holding Arroyo while Rosemead's offense was unable to mount an effective drive. Ar- royo went on to score a field goal in the closing minute to win IO to 0. Rosemead was successful in holding Arroyo to its lowest point total of the season and could take pride in playing well overall. par- ticularly on defense. l' Here we come to save the day! 2- look mom. no cavities! 3. NVASIO GF THE BLEACHER CRE TURE At Rosemead, the largest pep assembly we have to kick off the new school year is the Big R . The assembly generally promotes spirit and energy throughout the student body as classes unite to cheer on their graduat- ing year. During this assembly, fall sports including Football, Tennis. and Cross-Country teams are an- nounced. The auxillary, ranks, and cheerleaders gave us a fine performance. Our mascot. Patty Panther, made her debut during the assembly. She is full of spirit and en- thusiasm. Patty Panther gave us a wonderful perfor- mance during the pep assembly. She is a great addition to the terrific cheering squad of Rosemead. What did the students think of the Big R ? As Chris Jimenez put it, I believe the assembly had its good moments and it will get better as the years progress. Judy Solis quoted, The assembly was fun except for the seating arrangement. It would have been much better if we got to sit with our graduating class. Royce Campo- manes had this to say, The assembly was good but I think more people should get into the Panther spirit. Nancy Ho says, I thought the 'Big R' was fun especially having to get out of class and joining my friends in cheering for the class of '88. I. What time is the game? 2. Those words, uttered on October 3, l985, joined Sebas- tian Reyes and Linda Bustillos in the bonds of holy matrimony. Well, not really. The wedding. held in the Rosemead High School auditorium, initiated the beginning of married life for the students in Mr. Andrew DiConti's Personal Fi- nance Class. This class, as the name implies. teaches students how to plan financially in this new situation of providing for more than oneself. Such planning may include the purchase of a home, car, jacuzzi, and all other such necessi- ties. It places them in everyday type situations which are encountered in marriage. ln other words, these students learn what it takes for a marriage to be successful, both financially and emotionally. So when the time comes for them to truly walk the straight and narrow, they may be all the better prepared. The wedding and follow- ing reception that began it all required a great deal of planning and hard work. There were tux- edos to be ordered as well as the gowns, and the reception to be organized. But who said that marriage was going to be easy? I. lt's happiness and joy - for now. 2. Mr. DiConti thinking about the couple's future. 3. The bridesmaids showing off their gowns. Y,-f in ,, . WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM E ERIE D There are some things that are absolutely necessary to get us through high school: Money. a pet who is a great listener. and a good friend. Friends are by far the best things in the world. Without them we wouIdn't get those special hugs at just the right moment. homework to copy when our dog ate ours. or someone to laugh hysterically with for no apparent reason. Another big part of high school life are fads that are popular with the students. Fads on campus ranged from music trends to fashion to modes of transportation. Music boomed out into i985 with new wave sounds to heavy metal beats. Fashions showed us the dying of Madonna lookalikes to the new paislies. oversizeds shirts and antique jewelry and brooches. Modes of transportation brought us vespas. scooters. and ten speeds. while cars were still ever popular ways to get around. They seem to be constantly changing and you have to be really with it to keep up. We go through many different types of friends during our four years in high school. Each are special in their own ways. and each have different ways of expressing themselves to you. like for instance hugging each other and handshakes which is better then giving each other kisses or hugs. High school life can be fun. exciting. confusing and downright depressing. But with the help of our friends we all seem to survive our minor problems and have someone to tell our triumphs and secrets to. Tliiif l. Some of the stylish students at RHS. 2. Marty. FROM DANCING FEET TO MONDAY MORNING NEWS RHS IS RE DY TO PERFORM Gobd morning and welcome to this edition of the Rosemead Report. Top headlines are . . Sound a bit familiar? lt should because one can hear these exact lines every Monday morning during second period, and what bet- ter way to kill time in class than by watching the news? The Rosemead Report team works hard each week to bring you all the latest school newsfevents, sports, and whatever happenings an RHS student may need to know. The news also helped a few students wake up with its loud theme song! Could this production team be holding the next Walter Cronkite or .lane Pauley with Brian Tatosky or .ludy McGinley? Only time will tell! A new set of dancing feet has hit the grounds of Rosemead High. This new group, called Folklorico, was sponsored and started by Ms. Angelita Gonzales. Folklorico concentrates on regional dances from Mexico. Although they didn't perform in any competitions, they did present a performance on RHS' History Day and on Cinco de Mayo, The members of Folklorico put a lot of extra hours after- school and dedication into their dances with the help of their teacher, Mr. Robert Hernan- dez. They also raised money to keep the club alive which Ms. Gonzales hopes will help Folklorico to continue for more years to come. Dance Production, which was headed by Ms. Barbara Robbins. was unable to perform their annual dance concert due to the lack of dancers and experience. Even with the early signs of a small. inexperienced dance club. things looked as if the dance concert was going to pull through with the help of danc- ers outside the club. Unfortunately, many were unable to participate thus cancelling the concert. Nevertheless, the club worked on new formats and ideas to prepare for future concerts. Ms. Robbins adds, I'm hoping next year's dance concert will incorporate a lot more Iivelier aspects with dance, including singers and possibly bands. 62!Clubs Members of T.V. A VANCES T0 THE PL YOFF Playing an extremely tough preseason schedule, the Varsity started the season with a one win four loss preleague record. How tough the preseason schedule was became apparent as all of the teams played became highly ranked in their conferences or advanced to the playoffs. As the campaign progressed the team had been ad- justing players into different positions and had steadily improved its defense. Defense was to play an important role in Mission Valley league competition. Despite losing a hard fought I0 to 0 loss to Arroyo, the team had realized that it could do well in its remaining league games. The team had three successive league wins starting with a win over EI Monte which wasn't decided until the closing seconds. The Panthers proved to be tough playing before Homecoming Games as they spoiled both Mountain View and Duarte's Home- comings. The win over Duane was important in that Duane was the league's first place team. Playing well, the defense had a string of seven scoreless quarters while containing Duarte, who up to that time, had led the league in scoring. The last league game proved to be disappointing as Rosemead fell to Mark Keppel. A win would have enabled them to be co-champs while the loss placed the team as the league's second place finisher in the CIF playoffs. The Panthers played a very young team made up of a number of juniors and sophomores starters. The traditionally tough defense highlighted this l985 season. The captains of the team were Henry Chavez, James Banuelos, and John Bush. The team came back to beat El Monte I4 to I3 in theirrfirst league game. The toughest game of the year was against Arroyo in which the team viion 6 to O. B DMI TO CO TE TIO FDR LE GUE TITLE Varsity Badminton Coach Adrian Rodrigues remarked that this year's team is strong and has a very good chance of winning the league title. With a present league record of three wins and one loss, they may very well do so. Led by two outstanding singles play- ers, .lenyne Condon and Yiuman Tam, the varsity team finished preleague competition with a winning record. One of their most exciting games occurred against Alhambra High School. The two teams played closely, causing a tie to result in the overall score until the very last match. In this, the mixed doubles match, Rosemead prevailed and clinched the victory. The Junior Varsity Badminton team started the season very successfully, winning seven games and losing only one. The team hopes to continue to do well in league competition. In an exciting game against Mountain View High School, the score was seven to nine with Rosemead behind. The Panther's three mixed doubles teams proceeded to win their matches and, thus, gained the overall victory for Rosemead. Thesplans Present nd Then There Were None On Thursday, November IS, l985, the Rosemead Thespians presented Agatha Christies' And Then There Were None for their annual produc- tion in the Auditorium. The plot concerns an old man who owns a mansion on an island some- where off the coast of Devon, England. The man has invited ten people to be guests at his home for the weekend. Surprisingly, however, none of them can recall ever having met him before, nor do they ever see him during the course of their stay! But no matter, they are enjoying their holi- day -or so they think. This contest, combining horsemanship for donkey-manship j and basketball skill, pitted the Rosemead High School faculty against the students in a basketball game like no other. The rules were similar to those of any other basketball game - save for a few minor changes: before moving, passing, or shooting, one was required to be seated upon his or her donkey. Needless to say, this little detail made things a bit more difficult for the players. And the difficulty was compounded since the animal the players had to maneu- ver around the basketball court was a donkey, the reputedly stubbornest animal in the world. The brave, and foolish, souls who participated in this crazy contest were, for the faculty. Miss Jonsson, Mr. Taite, Coach Hall, Mr. Smith, Mr. Nichols. Coach Adame, Ms. Lawry, Danny DelCastillo, and Mr. Danny Martinez: and, for the students, Alfonso Arteaga, Trishell Young, Lorena DeAnda, Melinda Benavidez, Chris Brooks. Khanh Bui, Edmon Soliman, Scott Bland, and Sally Hines. Amidst all the humor and hilarity of the game, each side still wanted to win. This fact was seen in the close halftime score of 22 to 20 in favor of the faculty. The serious and competitive nature of the game ultimately gave in to humor as student and faculty players alike hilariously struggled to move their don- keys and, at times, fell off them. At the end, the faculty prevailed over the students by a score of 66 to 5 I. The game was a sight to see, one that would surely make James A. Naismith turn in his grave. MARCO A D GRAY GAME A BIG VICTCRY Maroon and Gray Week was filled with many fun activities. For instance, the student body enjoyed a variety of lunch time amusements. Class contests were held pitting the freshmen against the seniors in such competitions as the toilet paper wrap and the water balloon toss. Also during lunch was the annual Mr. Legs Contest. Here, the best-looking legs of our male students and teachers were the main attraction. Eric Espinal was the winner of the Mr. Legs Contest. At the week's end, the band and cheerleaders performed for the students at the pep rally. That night. the Rosemead Panther basket- ball team played against the Flintridge Prep Rebels in the Maroon and Gray Basketball Game. The Panthers played extremely well. With less than two minutes left remaining, Larry Samarzich put in the game-winning shot for a final score of SI to 50 in favor of the Panthers. Now, twenty years later, as I reflect on my experiences, I can especially recall walking through the halls of the administration build- ing, visiting classrooms. Big R assemblies, football games, band reviews, pep rallies, all- school plays, our choir singing Christmas car- ols through the halls. spring musicals, meet- ings with the student senate. reading the Panthers Tale, evening PTA meetings, fac- ulty luncheons, and so many more wonderful thoughts! But I especially savor the day-to-day opportunities I had to talk with our students. As I leave these hallowed halls of learning, I would like to leave some thoughts behind. May Rosemead High School be as pleasant and enriching a place for students to learn in the years to come as it had been in the past. I will indeed keep close to my heart all of the fond memories. To my fellow classmates of '86, may I say, always remember the words from our Alma Mater Where Maroon S Grey Mean Honor. Wherever you go, whatever you do, strive to bring only honor to yourself and to Rosemead High School. God bless you! fi' XX PRINCIPAL E. The boys made it to CIF finals for the third time in four years. All the runners were outstanding and all did very well. One runner. Aaron Mas- corro, commented on how he did say- ing. CIF was fun. I could have had a better day, but I did my best. With a look of wistfulness in his eyes added, Next year! Girls' Cross Country also did out- standing, reaching the CIF prelimi- naries. Vazquez, Maria I L. 37 3: 5 Sometimes we wonder why we ever took the positions of Editors. Insanity? Insecurity? We think not. Whether it's spending your summer at yearbook camp or coming up with creative ideas until your brain hurts, we've done it all. In our year as Editors we have been harassed, criticized, and sometimes we had to be a little callous with the student body as well as teachers. But we hope they understand the great length of work put into the yearbook. We do this not only for the glory, the fame. and the power, but also for your benefit thus creating a great yearbook. So we hope you enjoy this yearbook because we put alot of time and effort into it. We had a marvelous, excruciating, burgerless, fabulous. great time this past year on the Pantherama Staff. Thank you for your cooperation. We will never forget the experiences we had, the dreams we shared and the great friendships that will last a lifetime.
