Every year brings about changes in each of us, whether it is how we live, how we look, or how we think. These changes are largely a result of things we experience and observe everyday in the world around us. This year's Gleaner, The Main Attraction , is an attempt to categorize the events of the 1986-87 school year at Roscoe High School. This book, in a way, has become a part of Linda and myself. Through the course of putting this book together, we have worked, cheered, and cried. Sincerely, Kim Etheredge Editor The work involved in putting out an annual'is hard but rewarding. It involves not only long tedious hours but also lots of thought and emotion. It's fun to watch the annual being produced, and to watch how the year shapes for the students, and the teachers. No two years are ever alike so no two annuals are ever alike. It's always fun and exciting to take part of the memories each year brings. 'I'he annual is a special record of all thats happened in. that year. Sincerely, Linda Hernandez Asst. The Football Beau nominees were seniors: Larry Cornoyer, Neri De Loera, and Lee McFaul. The Band Sweetheart nominees were seniors Lisa Clark, Kim Etheredge, and Eileen Quimby. The Band Beau nominees were seniors: Terry Willman, Leo Hernandez, and Eileen Quimby. Congratulations to the winners! S Q v it F' 4 in A9 A8 Roscoe State Bank and Cont st Marching Contest was an ex- citing event for us this year as feelings of nervousness and ex- citement filled all who participated. It took Weeks of hard, serious practice to learn and perfect the marching drills we were to use at contest, then came our one chance to give our best perfor- mance and make a good rating. From beginning to end, I can say that after we had performed, most of us felt confident that we had done a good job. But our mo- ment of truth would come when the ratings were finally announc- ed . . . After what seemed to be forever, the speaker announced, Roscoe, Division I and the Whole band shrieked with happiness over the rating. Our goal for First Division had been achieved. Along with the thrill of winn- ing, meeting new people is exciting. I have met interesting people from Iayton, Trent, Ira, and Highland. Drama has been one of the most thrilling events in which I've participated. Our hard work paid off at Westbrook. We received many honors and took the Zone Championship! Unfortunately, the thrill of victory was gone at Rotan, where the district was too tough. We received many honors once again, but Trent and Hermeliegh went on to Bi-District. . We also had a debate team and two other in- dividuals to qualify for the Regional U.I.L. meet. Anyone who is skilled in an event should put out the effort to compete in U.I.L. Winning in an event not only gives pride to the individual, but also to the school. Congratulations to everyone honored through any U.I.L. event! It is fun to see what senior has the longest list ot achievements, or who was chosen Mr. an Miss RHS. This section is always fun to do because we get to see who the school thinks is the wittest and so on. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As the students entered school, they were told to report to the bleachers at the football field. Many rumors were circulating in the bleachers before the students were actually told the circumstances. After the students were told about the bomb threat, the faculty got everything under control. The girls were bused to the Community Center, where they gossiped and put on makeup. The guys stayed at the football stadium where they played football. Before the morning Was over, a decision was made to dismiss school. Most of the older students did not take the bomb threat seriously and thought it was great getting out of classes. However, some of the younger students took it more seriously, and were upset that some harm might come to the school and possibly some people. The building was searched by Dyess' bomb- sniff dogs, but nothing was found. Some students Went home to relax and sleep, or Watch t.v., and a lot of the high school students met and ate at Pizza Hut. A lot of gossip was spreading about how many bombs were found, or how many had gone off, and thankfully it was just gossip. KXOX appropriately dedicated two songs to Roscoe High School, Rumors and BoomtoWn. Kelly Hunter I R.H.S. fl To the 1986-87 Plowgirls, Coach Young and Coach Martin. I want to thank each of you for a very good and exciting year. At the beginning of the year, our goal was just to make it to the Regional tourney, but We did better than that! We made it to the Big House State!!! We did not Win state, but to me, I felt like we did, and I still do. I want to thank Coach Young and Coach Martin for believing in me, and not letting me be satisfied with just being good. I am going to miss all of you next year, and once again, thanks!!! The competition at the state level is tough because every per- son at the meet is a winner. The pressure was tremendous, but that made the trip even more exciting. I am glad that I had the opportunity to represent Roscoe High School at State in Informative Speaking, and I would like to thank Mr. Meares for pushing me to do my best. Mary Langston The UIL State meet in Austin was a terrific and memorable experience. I knew that shorthand was a difficult subject, but as I advanced on to state, I found that district was not as tough as I first thought! What I have learned this year will be very helpful to me in the future. Even though I did not win first, I felt honored to be able to attend the State meet. Everyone there had achieved something that others may never ex- perience in their lives, and I will always remember my trip to Austin as being fun and educational. Playing on the X playground, nap time, learning the ABC's are all parts of being in elementary school. You make friends and learn all sorts of new things. It is a fun exciting time in a child's life. Before you know it you are in Ir. High school. There are athletics and pep rallies, band and UIL. The courses are harder. Things like Computer Science and Texas History. It's different ex- perience altogether. The Elementaryflr. High section is our attempt to chronical the year for two very different groups of people. We hope to in- clude all the people and events that made this year special. Elementaryflr. High 107 'FY ff. X ,az . o-M' -w m ntsinTim ... ,f-va :-ek.
