The road before them was filled with dan- ger and hardships, but they were prepared. At an early age they began to get ready for knighthood. They built strong moral character, they trained their minds and their bodies to do their will, they learned to give orders and to take them, to work hard and to play fair, to be friendly, wise and generous. We, the knights of today, are also learning to live useful, well-rounded lives. From Roosevelt's halls we go out into the world with the knight's ideals. No matter what the difficulties, we will be braveg no matter what the dangers, we will be fearless in the cause of the right, no matter' what the cost, we will be considerate of others. We will be proud sons and daughters of Roosevelt. 5 . JOANNE ARNOLD, Editor-in-Chief. N . Y J .N .., N. as ' Y If-1, 1 5,3 'fl P 3 Q if , 'R M 3 ' . f N .M . v , 'Vi K ' fxx 3, .. 53 . And through the pages its busy, effective producers lead us to recapture in memory the days and feats of knighthood in the land of time gone by. 'J Strange figures today these warriors in shining armor on fiery steeds who rode forth from their castles on the hilltops down into the valleys to aid the weak and right the wrong. Yet h hould serious to them were their knightly vows and code of honor. Sans peur et sans reproc e s each defender of the code of knighthood strive to be. f To us they stand above all for courageg opposing their crude weapons and instruments in a world of fear to the unknown forces surrounding them. In Tennyson's words, And indeed he seems to me Scarce other than my own ideal knight, 'Who reverenced his conscience as his kingg Whose glory was, redressing human wrongg Who spake no slander, no, nor listened to it.' Their example should he an inspiration to us, as armed with the ever-broadening discoveries of modern science, and with confident acceptance of ethical standards and spiritual values, we move forward to carry on to greater summation the hopes and efforts of knights of yore. 'fig fag, lS very much alive. It lives wherever boys and girls purpose in their hearts to live for the 1 ni' Z. x ' '- '-?v2u'Q N' -'ZW' Theodore Roosevelt, for whom our school was named, was one of those who be- lieved in fighting aggressively for the right-in fact, he once said, It is the noblest sport the world affords. Roosevelt lived the thing he believed in. He lived vigorously and joyously-he was indeed a knight in shining armor. Today, as always, the challenge to you is to prepare in body, mind, and spirit to live and fight on the side which may lose an occasional battle, but always wins the war-the side which stands for the freedom of the individual to make of his life something decent, significant, and fine. En- listment in the fellowship of chivalry is always open-you may join now. CHI. jf. Eullnck Bins 3BrinnipaI I . 5 If ' ,X 1, 'X 'f 'J F ,1 H.-L 5 , x 6 xl. 5 L 5 N . 15 . 'S . N THE fall of 1946, there gathered at Roosevelt High School a class of eager students ready to start their long dreamed about high school years. The majority came from Shoreline, Bryant, Laurelhurst, Ravenna, and Olympic View. Their freshman year was spent becoming used to the new buildings and its schedules and adopting as their own the school motto, What I am to be I am now becoming. Through the second and third years they sailed, growing and prospering under hard work and wholesome play. At last came the big year which, when looking backward, took a surprisingly short time to reach. The senior class of 1950 elected as officers: Ross McLaughlin, president, Don Zalesky, vice president, Marilyn Davis, secretaryg and Jack Cahill, treasurer. Under the able advisership of Miss Hattie Fitzgerald and Miss Mary Simeon, the class sponsored a fall party called The Senior Snow Slide, and the traditional annual picnic and prom in the spring, all finally topped off with long awaited commencement actvities. As the members of the class stand to receive their diplomas they give thanks to their teachers and advisers who guided them so well in these very important years. They are leaving filled with rich memories of friendships and experiences, both of which go to make up wonderful years of high school life. They look toward the future with a fuller understanding of life, greater knowledge, and higher ideals with which to face the world. 43 3 - 1... , NL! jf.-' ,-AI 'A I, gif. This dance, which was one of the most successful of the year, was presented HARRIET KREP5 by a group of hard-working committees. Tickets for refreshments were handled by Jeanine Newcomer and Helen Haley, with posters and publicity well done under the supervision of Judy Flournoy and Barry Schneiderman. The entertainment in- cluded a chorus line dressed in red, followed by two clowning Santas who had the crowd shaking with laughter. Large Santas and clowns on the wall and Christ- mas music added to the Christmas spirit. Marianne Soha and Genie Kurak sang Winter Wonderland, while the res joyed ice cream sandwiches furnished by Jean Rue and Alan Stephe . First on the agenda was the election of officers, resulting in the victories of the following: president, Arlene Swanson, vice-president, Jim Andersen, secretary, Pat Gilbert, treasurer, Joy Price. The officers immediately began plans for the Sophomore Scamper, the class party, which was held on October 27th. Chosen to supervise the various sub-divisions were Neoma Ward, chairman of dancing, Tom Winter, games, Marlene Biehn, decorations, John Law, refreshments, Georgia Kravik, publicity, Corinne McCumber and Don Lockwood, entertainment. Committee members cooperated to make the Scamper as fast- moving and as much fun as its name implied. Several sophomores contributed their talents to Roosevelt productions. The class sparkled scholastically with 138 members on Torch. A number of prospects turned out for Teddie sports, of these, the stand-out was Mike Monroe, who was given honorable mention on the all-city football team and was a star on the basketball varsity. With such beginnings, the Class of '52 should prove to be an apt example of its motto, Always Successful. Sophomore Party Committee Chairmen The Sophomore Scamper 56 Ackerson, J . Adams, R. The new students were quick to join in activities and everyone was eager to take part in the democratic organization known as The Associated Students of Rooseveltf, Idi lrl-l'll'0l1gl'l this organization the students learn to work with each other, and acquire valuable experience that will help them in future years. nd the The ASR CABINET is composed of the class presidents, the class representatives, a ASR officers.. Problems of the school are discussed thoroughly before being sent to the student council. The ADVISORY COUNCIL gives students an opportunity to talk over their difficulties with other students. This makes for better understanding between all concerned, and leads to a more united student body. Much of the work accomplished by the ASR was done through its committees. The chairman used many underclassmen on these committees and apportioned the work as evenly as possible, in order that the ASR might truly represent the entire student body. 74 ADVISORY COUNCIL Back raw: jane Osterhout, Don Keith, Donna Corlett, Virgy Lamberton, Jim Stoddard, Marcia Keller: fron! row: Bob Porter, Shirley Goggins, Bud Hutchins, Betsey Bird, George Harding. Opportunities offered at Roosevelt are available to all, but the use of these advantages lies with each stu- dent. We have tried this year to encourage individual participation in ASR activities, and hope we have thereby contributed to the demo- cratic principles and spirit of Roose- velt. The ASR ofhcers wish to thank those who have helped make this year a success. We have sincerely enjoyed working with and for you. BETSEY BIRD ASR Secretary 75 THE STUDENT COUNCIL meets in the balcony of the auditorium whenever it is necessary. The Council is composed of two representatives from each roll and has the power to originate or to approve any legisla- tion proposed hy the executive department and affect- ing the entire student body. Each class selects its repre- sentatives, a boy and girl, by popular vote. Through the roll reps, each student may have a direct contact with the ASR government. q ,N BUD HUTCHINS Vice President ACTIVITY INTERVIEWING nop left? J. Greaves gets get the ANNUAL startedg the NEWS underway. EADLIN ES! Deadlines! Deadlines keep the Annual and the News staffs on schedule. S? Unless all deadlines were met it would be impossible for these publications to be dis- tributed on lixed dates. With Mrs. Flory as adviser of the Annual, and Mr. Greaves adviser of the News, and the complete cooperation of each staff member, the year- book and paper have maintained their traditionally high standards and ideals. THE ANNUAL The production of our book involves much time and planning. One of the first important steps is choosing a theme so that the art editor and assistant may create pictorial forms for our ideas. As this work progresses, each staff member is assigned a definite section for which he is responsible. After much study he designs and draws up exact picture plans for each page. When these patterns, or layouts, have been approved by Mrs. Flory, the editor-in-chief, and the layout editor, they are sent to the printer and the engraver for their estimate and approval. Five copies of each layout must then be prepared and assembled into dummies. Picture taking is begun soon after school opens, as the first deadline comes just before Christmas and the second soon after vacation. After the pictures are developed and printed by the photographers, they are approved by the pictorial editor who considers all good and bad aspects of each picture. Those which meet engraving requirements are then turned over to the mounters, who crop them and fit them into spaces drawn up on large cardboards. The mounting of the pictures is very particular work and must be meticulously done. Copy on each section and captions for each picture are next prepared. The cardboards are now ready to be taken to the engraver who photographs and tranfers them to copper plates, making cuts. These are mounted on wooden blocks and sent to the printer. He combines these cuts with the copy already delivered to him by the editor and sets them up in his press. Galley proofs are made and sent to the staff and the tedious work of proofreading, type resetting, and proofreading again, is begun. Then the printer starts his presses and copy rolls off sixteen pages at a time. They are cut, assembled and bound in a cover and end sheets designed by the artists. A year's hard work is finished and the annual is ready for eager students and an anxious staff. 84 A NEWS editor. Rose Armstrong, Uefll, gets a page plan ready, while the ANNUAL STAFF pool their energies to meet the first deadline. THE NEWS Under the advisership of Boss Greaves, and the management of six edi- tors, a paper is produced each week. The editor-in-chief of the week must work out his own individual page plan. He must assign the stories and the number of inches to each of the reporters on the staff. Deadlines are set and fines are im- posed for overdue stories. The best stories are selected for publication and edited by the copy editor. They are then taken to the printer who sets the type and runs off galley proofs. The copy editor proofreads these galleys and returns them to the printer. The paper is printed and received at school on Tuesday morning where it is folded. During sixth period messengers distribute the News to anticipating pass- holders. The pictures at the right show the pro- cess of developing, engraving photo- graphs, and printing, used by both the ANNUAL and the NEWS. The first picture is of the photographer washing pictures after they have been developed. The engraver fin the second picturej is at work at his machine getting ready to run proofs of the copper cuts. In the last picture the printer has started the final phase. This was the goal of the Girls' Club. fQQfi'f'r iff Friendliness was shown in a welcome program for all new girls, which included the selection of a Big Sister for each newcomer, and orientation talks to acquaint girls with school procedures and activities. The girls' adviser, Miss Isabelle Neffeler, helped solve problems, and proved a true friend to everyone. Sign-up Days were held inthe fall and spring so that each girl in school had a fair chance to be active on Girls' Club committees of her own choice. Being faithful to tradition, the girls planned and success- fully managed Father-Daughter and Mother-Daughter ban- quets, with Peggy Thometz and Shirley Goggins, respectively, chairmen of the two events. Parties and assemblies were arranged to give a wide variety of information and entertainment, so that fun would be pro- vided for all. A 65-yard touchdown romp by Monroe sewed up the scoring for the afternoon. Franklin I 05 Displaying definite potentiali- ties of a championship outfit in a 13 to 7 waxing of Lincoln, the green and gold color-bearers laid claim to a half share in the pig- skin lead with three triumphs in as many starts. The 'Riders cashed in on a couple of costly Lynx mishaps which set the stage for both of Roosevelt's scores, as Brask and Tackle Dick Unrue successively recovered fumbles for the Teds. Both teams see-sawed up and down the entire length of the field but neither managed to build up enough steam to push the leather over the goal-line. No less than three times the Teddies drove deep into Indian territory, once within two yards of paydirt, but each time failed to penetrate the West Siders' iron curtain. The Indians waved goodbye to any championship consideration with this one. !, An offense-minded Ballard eleven led by All-City backs Eddie Sage and Jerry Dodds proved to be too big a bite for Roosevelt's determined gridders. Operating off Coach Henry Bendele's effec- tive split-T, the Beavers pentrated the Teddy forward wall for con- sistant gains, scoring within the initial minutes of the game and again at the outset of the second half. 'Vi Cleveland 108 Harassed by dtiving winds and a steady downpour of rain, the Colonels once more fell victims of a scoreless deadlock, this time in the season's finale against the Hilltoppers from Queen Anne. With the exception of a despera- tion drive staged by the Teds in the closing minutes, both teams failed to click either aerially or on the ground, due almost en- tirely to the adverse weather con- ditions. ' Roosevelt's second squad, with Coach Don Harney at the helm, managed to chalk up a pair of victories and one tie against three setbacks, finishing in a fifth-place berth. Holding down regular assignments for the greater part of the season were: McLaughlin and Scott at ends, Ben- jamin and Woodcock at tackles, Babb and Hicks at guards, Bowen at center, Bean and Rardin at the halfback positions, and Hull calling signals at quarterback. Most of these boys played enough varsity ball to earn their big R's. Under the efficient leadership of Bob Lindh, the Teddy thirds placed one rung below their bigger brothers in garnering a single triumph, a tie, and four defeats. Carrying the brunt of the load were Babcock, Richards, Pierce, and Slick, ends, Bradner and Benson, tackles, johnson and Schwartz, guard, Bean, center, Foster, Marshall, and Markey, halfbacksg Matheson, fullbackg and Groesbeck, quarterback. Roosevelt's green but promising ball club worked its way from a tie for the cellar berth to the city championship playoff at Edmundson Pavilion inside of a single season. The Teds opened their twelve game agenda with a convincing triumph over a sky-scraping five from West Seattle, only to drop the next three successive contests. Then with sheer determina- tion and courage, the Cowan Park boys settled down and duplicated a few of the potentialities of Art McLarney's colorful champions of 1946 by making a clean sweep of their eight remaining games. However, the Roughriders were faced with extremely tough opposition in the title-deciding fracas in the form of three all-city first string boys and consequently had to be content to remain second only to a powerful Lynx five. Nevertheless, Roosevelt's hoop club of 1950 will remain prominent in the records for its impressive play throughout the season. The Tecls' contributions to the ten outstanding casaba players of the city were: Guard Karl Brask, who was nominated to a position on the first five, and Mike Monroe, who was chosen as a second team forward. With Brask the sole graduating senior on the first five, only one major replacement had to be made. The remainder of the starting aggregation consisting of guard Jerry Johnson, forwards Eddie Schaeffer and Monroe, and center John Ramsay were back to wrinkle the brows of opposi- tion players and coaches once again. As many followers and supporters commented at the close of the season, Watch out for the Teds' comeback next year. Ill .- H 7 M x . INDING UP the twelve-game playing schedule with a six-won, six-lost record, the Teddy seconds couldn't quite parallel the pace set by the varsity, nevertheless they established themselves as one of the stronger teams in the scrub league by finishing in a tie for fourth place with Queen Anne's Grizzlies. Lincoln's scrub outfits set a sizzling pace for the other seven schools and consequently finished the season on top of both the second and third team ladders. The opening tipoff through the majority of the season saw Holt in the center circle, Watson and Morgan as forwards, and Rardin and Jarvis at the guard positions. Roosevelt's third squad showed similarities to Coach Bob Lindh's quintet of last year which captured the city crown. Grabbing an early lead and holding it for most of the season, the frosh-sophs dropped three contests toward the end of the schedule and had to be content with a third place berth in the final standings. Handling starting assignments were: Bean, Sipherd, Perkins, Olson, and Bradner. Close on the heels of these boys were: Coshow, Paulson, and Pierce. If the performances of these and other promising freshmen and sophomore hoopesters pro- vides any indication of Roosevelt's basketball fortunes in years to come, the outlook for the future is indeed bright. On top of the final standing were Queen Anne's Grizzlies, who won from Garfield in the title-decider. Leading the Teddy nine from the plate was Doug Bohlke, who was a mainstay in the right field pasture. Bohlke, however, played his final year for Roosevelt as did Jim Callaghan, Jim Williams, Pete Erickson, and Bill Meeks. Credit also goes to Dick Crain for his efficient managerial services. Heading the list of outstanding prospects for the ensuing season was Dick Ellis, a senior, who was number three man on the 1949 net squad. Close behind was Doyle Perkins, who as a freshman established himself as one of the topnotch members of the team. With Terry Mahaffey being the only remaining monogram bearer, competition for the other six positions was wide open. Many promising sophomores and juniors were making determined bids for these spots at the initial turnout, with Herb Smetheram, Oliver Holte, Glen Harris, and Don Keefe appearing to be the outstanding choices. These and undoubtedly other court artists will be fighting next year to bring home still more honors to add to Roosevelt's ever increasing list of impressive tennis records. The Hgbbk revue is an annual tradition which gives almost everyone who wishes, a chance to display his talent. This year the scene was laid in a maga- zine publishing office in which the personnel were trying to decide upon a cover for the magazine. In their search for ideas they took the audience to France, England, the North Pole, and South America, and finally decided upon a cover with illustrations from these four areas. The script was written by Louaine Schrum. Mr. Strauss was the director, and Lou Ann Meyers, the student di- rector.
