Chorus students also performed the traditional ritual of caroling in the halls the day before Christmas sacation began. Iirom xocal music students memories may turn to the instrumental music department and Malone Hall. The march- ing band also something new this past year spent long hours learning intricate steps and formations. Practice paid off in compliments when members marched at football and basket- ball games, parades and tournaments. Orchestra members met at Malone Hall Tuesday nights to practice for yearly orchestral functions including playing for school plays assemblies music festix als graduation and various other school actisities. For some students art classes viere a preparation for a future career for others it was a course where ereatne talents were dexeloped and sarious hobbies pursued Miss Moberg s Art I students may remember the great xariety of aetixities undertiken Skills included water coloring ceramics lettering woodcarsing and other projects of general interest At II gaxe students a chance to des elop speeial talents and interests as students spent most of their time on the one art ph ise in which they excelled Foreign language students will remember happy but hard working times Wlaile struggling to mister a foreign languige some students were chagrined to find that they hadnt really mastered their natixe tongue-English. Who else but Miss Vernetti could have taught both French I and II and Spanish I and II with such ease and patience? The past year 71 students were enrolled in her classes. First-year language students chose a name from the country they were studyingva name which was kept through both years of the course. Conjugation and usage of xerbs plagued many students. Learning lyrics to a l're-nch song or creating a Spanish skit was work too but of a happier sort. Language students also banded together this past year to form their own club Spaench '. These are some of the memories a student may hold of fine arts courses at Roosexelt. X AFTER READING ABOUT the Suez crisis in Newsweek, Gerry and Chuck find the globe very helpful in their study of this situation and other foreign affairs. I 5 i 'N iw X., THE THlNKER has nothing on Gary Larson GS he is bent with studies on history. RANDY, SHARON AND RICHARD portray the different levels of learning as they study current events in their weekly news magazines. Social Science One of the advances in the modern world has been better social understanding. Schools provide students with social studies courses to further understanding of other peoples, their problems and resources. Because of their recognized im- portance, these courses were required rather than elective subjects. Worlcl History, during tenth grade, dealt with world problems from prehistoric to modern times. juniors studied American History which gave information on American heri- tage and background. Twelfth grade brought Civics, the study of the Constiution and political and governmental processes of the United States. The second semester students studied either Economics, dealing with production, distribution and consumption of wealth or Sociology, the knowledge of social problems. Looking back through the years, certain incidents may stand out in students' minds. Most will remember World His- tory discussions with all desks moved into a circle. With Our Times , sophomores learned to read and evaluate newspaper facts. Names from ancient history such as Hatshepsut stand out in everyone's mind. Remember how frightened everyone was of the discussion topics with six weeks' tests? Term sheets were also part of Miss Simon's world history course. As juniors, United States History taught by Mr. Anderson really was a ball . His class was especially interesting with his endless jokes and different slant on historical characters. This year Mr. Haldy was added to the list of history instructors, taking over Mr. Rukavina's U. S. History classes. Observers were also part of the junior year of history. Everyone invari- ably turned to the jokes first. As seniors, Civics was a snap-providing one could catch up on a dozen chapters the night before a test. Students strug- gled through Newsweeks once a week, trying hard to con- centrate on news of the world. Soon everyone came to recog- nize which articles wereimost important and which ones could be skipped. Lucky seniors had a choice between Sociology and Economics the second semester. Mr. Mcllvenna and Mr. Ruka- vina taught these subjects, using very different methods. Ruka- vina's students will recall workbook exercises and terms, while Mac's students will remember countless lecture periods. Thus students completed Roosevelt's social studies cur- riculum with some knowledge of world affairs and problems. uw- ' E' waz! Natural Science Natural science courses just seemed to bring the devil out in students. Shattering test tubes, covering dimes with mercury, doodling on graph paper, leaving the gas on in an unlit Bunsen burner, smashing thermometers while using them for stirring, not learning valences and symbols and study- ing feverishly the night before a test are among the more in- teresting moments had by students. There are eight natural science courses in the Roosevelt High school curriculum. Of these, five are mathematics courses. These include Algebra, Plane Geometry, Higher Al- gebra, Solid Geometry and Trigonometry. Biology, Physics and Chemistry are the three science courses. These eight are often considered the most difficult of all subjects. At least one science and one mathematics credit are need- ed for graduation. This means that, for the most part, natural sciences are electives. Biology often is chosen to meet the science requirement. Dissecting worms, hsh and frogs was quite an adventure and the sweet formaldehyde odor couldn't be beaten. Ameobas and planarias were biology students' classroom pets. Physics deals with the states and properties of energy and inorganic matter. Besides group A and B problems , experi- ments were carried on and classroom discussions and explana- tions often took place. Symbols and valences had to be memorized for Chemistry in the study of the changes in the composition of matter. The large Periodic Chart of Atoms flanked by two smaller charts served as valuable aids for Mr. Oman as he did blackboard explanations and students occasionally used them, too. Mr. Oman made everything sound so simple with his slogan, Think people! lt's more fun that way. Algebra is usually the choice for the mathematics require- ment. Plane Geometry with its axioms and- theroms is also taken by a comparatively large percentage ol Roosevelt High school students. A . The next plateau for students taking higher mathematics is Higher Algebra. A semester of Solid Geometry and a semes- ter of Trigonometry may be taken in the senior year to com- plete the mathematics courses. . I . Natural science is growing more important daily in Our modern world. It is widely known that science and mathe- matics are essential in engineering, medicine and research of all kinds. ,Jv- nolebc3:TEf1oi,lhiTd'iJ?d5i'ieS les, iube in Chemislry as MMY JO C0 1SUlfS ber ir TAKES A emi. ri E 'I + i. chuck Don .1 ti is dd 'ii my O S ow G i H U y t e solut'o t th' ' Geometry problem I n O Is Solid AS A BIOLOGY STUDENT, Jerry Piefrini has be- come familiar with the unpleasant smell of formalde- hyde, even fhouqh dissecting a frog proves this class can be interesting. This course taught students much about the operations of typewriters. Not looking at the keys was hard when those, fgdgsgag . . . exercises appeared! I-low in the world can I ever do this, was frequently heard in office practice concerning the electric typewriter, dic- taphone and other machines. Filing was also a part of this class. The usual trip was taken to a business firm. In Shorthand I the simplified Gregg Method was taught. Speed tests, ranging to 120 words a minute were dictated and typed up by the pupil. Special merit awards were given for speed and accurate transcribing in Shorthand II. I know I jotted it down someplace, was often heard in Bookkeeping class. The essentials of bookkeeping are the journal and the ledger. Precise drill was given on each process with additional practice sets. Girls home arts at Roosevelt consist of cooking and sew ing One semester each of sewing and cooking constitutes the beginning course For those who wished to have more train ing a year of cooking or sewing was offered Remember when that crust burned? will probably bring back memories to cooking students Of course there were times when that crust didn t burn and young cooks turned out mouth watering dishes Besides baking canning and freezing foods preparing foreign dishes was learned Tomorrows homemaker will face rising prices accord ingly budget balancing and choosing cuts of meat were studied In the one semester homemaking class sewing basics were taught In the ads anced sewing course these ideas were put to work Buying excursions along with visits to the shirt factory helped round out activities Girls will also remember model ing their handiwork at thc annual style show so Do, DARLENE KATHY CHAR and Judy enloy making holiday cookies especially when they can sample results Qui.. that YW . . Vocational Vocational education is a type of education designed to prepare young people for their life's work with little or no additional train- ing necessary. Vocational education trains a student in the skills and social understanding necessary for a specific occupation. This guidance helps the individual choose the proper occupation. Since the beginning of the present century, vocational education has made rapid progress. At Roosevelt many vocational courses were offered, among them: Cabinet Making, Drafting, Auto Mechanics. Forging and Welcling, Printing and Electricity. For each of these subjects the student receives one credit. For senior high school students a Smith-Hughes program is designed to give more specific training in the field of their choice. Actual training experience along with textbook study is given in the three'hour subject. Only two and one-half credits are given to this subject although students spend three hours a day in the course. The difference is that Smith-Hughes is a laboratory, not a theory course. ob Rclitions and On The ob Triinin 'I'DL1Sl be taken together - XL. He is then under an instructor who visits him on the job and works with the employer in his instruction. l Each school day the Smith-Hughes student receive an hour of classroom instruction known as job Relations. Here he learned addi- tional facts that the employer had failed to specify. The requirement for taking Smith-Hughes Printing-is one year of general printing. A student must have three years ot junior high shops or one year of senior high Auto Mechanics in order to take Smith-Hughes Auto Mechanics. The value of this kind of training is that a student can try out his chosen career and know whether he will be a misfit or can handle the work and find it enjoyable. Future carpenters, printers, welders, electricians, draftsmen, mechanics, and technicians may harbor memories of this occupa- tional training received during high school days at Roosevelt. This helpful group, under its adviser Miss Ellen Korpy and officers, did much during the year, At the meetings methods were discussed for rais- ing money to help the needy in foreign- countries. Students in school participated by contributing money, tha't was given over to the American Red Cross service fund. A gift chest was also shipped during the year to a specified country. This chest contained various items which would be useful to the receivers. Other things accomplished during the year were visting the Pioneers' Infirmary patients, an end-of-the-year sale and the initiation of new members. By their service, certain students merit- ed selection to attend Red Cross camps during the summer. Here an informative and enjoyable time was had. With these memories, seniors close an- other chapter of life at Roosevelt. STANDING. Wx Changing the name of the water show from Aqua Fantasy to Aquarama 111 was only one of the major changes made by Aquatic League in 1956-57. Getting an early start, the girls started practice in early November. April 16-17 marked the rewarding end of the mer- maids' many hard-swimming hours. Aquarama 111 was a composite of syn- chronized swimming, fancy and comic div- ing, dolphins, floating and submerged for- mations, kips and varied water ballets. Emphasis was placed in combining songs and dances from countries throughout the world. The 1957 show also marked the beginning of using costumes while swim- ming. The routines were planned and worked out by the girls themselves, occasionally asking needed advice from their instructor and adviser, Mrs. LaNette Malette. Library Helpers The willing donation of time and ser- vice by 14 students aided Miss Wadd, the high school librarian, in performing rou- tine tasks of library management. Students do such jobs as checking in books, receiving money for fines, shelving books. giving information about books and performing many other tasks required in A- running an efficient library. Most of these students gave their as- sistance during library periods. This work is not required or credited. The library as- sistants sole reward is the know-how she gains about the function of a library and the knowledge of public service. The library helpers system has been effective for the past eight years. It gives students an opportunity to learn how to handle a smooth-running library. A li- brary such as this is essential because stu- dents must often use the stock of know- ledge that is found in the scho0l's actively circulating library, Spciench RHS foreign language students form- ed a new club this year named Spaench. The cIub's purpose is to promote a better understanding of other countriesg their languages and their customs. Any student who has completed one semester of either French or Spanish is eligible for membership. New members are chosen at the beginning of the second semester with the approval of the club adviser. It was decided to elect six officers in- cluding one president, a vice-president for both the French and Spanish students, a secretary-treasurer. a representativeeto-the student-council and a sergeant-at-arms. New officers are elected every spring and serve the following year. The club adviser is the foreign language instructor Miss Vernetti. Members decided to meet every fourth Wednesday of each month in the social room. Only two unexcused absences will be permitted in one year before a member is dropped from the club. As freshmen and sophomores, '57 graduates, who were band members, gave concerts, held a paper drive and sold calendars with group pictures of the band. These activities helped earn money for new uniforms. Instructors, Mr. Geary, Mr. Humpal and Mr. Davis were of great as- sistance in the all-out campaign. Remember when these men spent their spare time figuring new ways to earn more money? Every fourth period of the school day, from September to june, mem- bers could be found trudging to Malone Hall, above the school garage, in rain, snow or sunshine. There, students were greeted by Mr. Humpal, who promptly took roll. Then members settled down into their various sections in the band. Usually the day would start out with the playing of one or two marches and then changed to classical pieces. Mr. Humpal led the band during the time the concert pieces were played. Mr. Geary took over the marching band at the end of the '56 school year and continues to lead the group. He taught new routines and formations which members mastered after frequent practice. The marching band, a colorful and peppy squad consisting of 66 nrem- bers, performed for football and basketball games. The group played at a few out-of-town games and also journeyed to march in other parades in sur- rounding towns last summer. The marching unit was lead throughout the year by faithful maiorettes, Donna Jenia, seniorg Loretta Fvanoff, senior, janet Putzel, senior, Sandra Neari, sophomore and Judy Arnberg, junior. if As sophomores, most band members bought sweaters in the school GLAD IN BAND SHR-rs' 'HMM members were colors blue and white with band emblems on the front. Lettermen The Lettermen's Club was formed under the name of the V Club back when football games were played on what is now the school parking lot and the district and re- gional tournaments were played in the Technical High gymnasium. The goal set forth then in the constitution was to foster and perpetuate the spirit of good sportsman- ship in all interscholastic activities. This year under the leadership of president, Gary Lar- song vice-president, jim Nahkalag treasurer, Pete Johnsong and secretary, Joe Froelingsdortg the club has been active in numerous projects. Fund-raising activities included sell- ing coffee, candy and hot dogs at home college and high school football games and selling pop and checking coats at home basketball games. Lettermen escorted football homecoming Queen Paul- ine Maras and her attendants at the coronation ceremonies on Friday, October 5. Although the ceremonies were spirit- ous, the game was less successful. To further the spirit of good sportsmanship, lettermen presented the Hag during the national anthem at all basket- ball games held in Virginia. On Friday, January ll, the Lettermen chose Betty Nigro to reign over the basketball homecoming against International Falls. Betty reigned over the game and the Kampus Kanteen victory dance that followed. In the spring the Lettermen had an informal party in the Hotel Coates' Viking Room. Cokes were served and the Lettermen and their dates danced from 8:00 to 12:00. Membership in the club is gained by all male athletes who have been granted a V for participation in football, basketball, hockey, baseball, track, swimming, tennis or golf. An athlete must have played enough quarters, periods, inn- ings or have placed in enough meets to qualify for a letter award in a particular sport. The Lettermen's Club is ably advised by L. L. Michels, swimming and track coach, and works with the cooperation of the entire athletic department. This was the hrst amateur- presentation of Dino g it was also the first time RHS has given a play based upon a television drama. David Halunen played the title role. His par- ents, who did little to help Dino with his problems, were played by'Emily Alar and Randy Anderson. Dino's brother Tony, played by Ronald Goldberg, tried to follow in his brother's footsteps. Others tried to rehabilitate the delinquent Dino. Warren Erickson played Dino's parole officer, Mr. Mandel. Mr. Sheridan, a case worker, was played by Robert Hedican and Shirley, a shy and backward girl was portrayed by jean McKenzie. It was these people who helped Dino toward his final goal of social acceptance. The supporting cast included: Michele Hansen, Jeanette Makynen, Kathy O'Brien, Vera Person, jim Postudensek, Patty Cron, Arthur Rued, Bonnie Ambrose, Dorothy johnson, jane Koski and Ar- dythe Nukala. Junior emor Prom if vs,n l955 56 JUNIOR CLASS president Gary Larson and vice president Galen Squires with 'lheur guests Mary Jo Angelo and Nancy Lahh admire the fountain cenler aflrachon of the prom In a vine and flower-laden Spanish courtyard couples danced to jimmy Baldrica's orchestra at the traditional unior-Senior Promenade May 11 1956. A bubbling fountain flanked by potted geraniums and ferns pale pink courtyard wills trailing, vsith bourglinvillea and a xine- cox ered ceilings suggested a semi-tropical garden. Preparations began early in April when committees were selected by the junior class officers. Headings the various committees were Galen Squires decorations' Warren Erickson programs' Sally Rankila punch' ean Liapis grand march and Claire Simon invitations. ' The most difficult task was decorating, the gym. The huge structure had to beitransformed into whatever theme selected. Sex eral meetings of the decoration committee were necessary before fin agreement was reached on a Spanish courtyard theme. All junior class members helped in the weeks before to assemble the decorations, Thursday afternoon and all day Friday juniors scrambled up and down ladders scotch-taped pounded nails and perched precariously on ladders to hang, the ceiling, with crepe paper vines. By late Friday afternoon the gym no longer resembled its former self but had blossomed into a lush tropical courtyard. unior Class President Gary Larson and his guest Miss Mary Angelo led the Grand March followed by Senior Class President Charles Richards and his partner Patricia Fleck.
