Ar 1, ' ..,.,4,, I 1 Q5 23 5' 3 I A tv Special Events i'Squaw Valley, here we come! echoed throughout the halls of Roosevelt as the Rough Rider band anticipated its trip to the site ofthe Vlll Winter Olympics. The group had reason to be proud, as it was one of only two bands in the valley to receive an invitation to this classic event. Boarding buses one early morning in February, llO sleepy people departed for the valley, a land ot snow and ice. Upon arriving and atter what seemed like hours and hours of practicing, the band partici- pated in the impressive opening ceremonies. The band members bunked overnight in the high school gym in Reno, Nevada. Preceding the Winter Games, several members ot Roosevelts cross country team aided in transporting the torch to Squaw Valley. Lighted in Norway, and flown by iet to Los Angeles, the torch was carried by relays ot high school boys to the sight ot the Games. Started in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece, the torch sym- bolizes the age-old ideal ot peace among all peoples and nations.
