The administration building housed the first students, a group of sophomores. A few years later the bungalows were built to provide extra classrooms. Time changed the appearance of the campus, and with the increasing number of students the East Hall and Gymnasium were necessary. To replace the out-dated cafeteria, a new one was constructed. To provide for mo- dern education, the swimming pool and shops were built. This period of growth and development in Roosevelt history could be compared to a person's life. There were early struggles for recognition as well as goals which were set and accomplished, but not without time and work and effort. Now is presented to you a book that assumes one purpose: To record the highlights and activities of this Sil- ver Anniversary year, 1952-53. Whether this is your first Nautilus, as a freshman, or the final copy in your col- lection, as a senior, read it today, tomorrow and in the years to come. We hope that you will treasure it for its everlasting value. Don Burks Editor-in-Chief T953 Nautilus l m ,i.. l f L , ,...,NN 1t g 'ii i' 1 7 s DEDICATION This year marks an important milestone in the life of the Theodore Roosevelt High School. This Silver Anni- versary notes 25 years of progress which has been made possible through the team work of administrators, counselors, teachers and students. Numerous achieve- ments have taken place and many of these are record- ed on the pages of this book. Instead of looking back, we wish to look ahead at the future progress of the school. The completion of Roosevelt's new auditorium and the addition of other new facilities will be helpful in serving the increasing number of students who will attend this school. Those of us who have taken a part in Roosevelt's development and progress and are leaving this year join with those who are yet to graduate in dedicating this i953 Nautilus to the future of Theodore Roosevelt High School. 5: 1? 1- X' --'- ' X X V, 'vw -N -,gf . Q. Q- 'tx . , R ,. A ,- -.Mp-. s g: Q., My Twenty-five years ago Roosevelt High School consisted of bungalows. The Student Body numbered approx- imately nine hundred. From this modest beginning our school has in- creased to almost twenty-four hun- dred students. This was a six year high school, and to accomodate the large number of students a building now known as East Hall was built. However, the bungalows still re- mained. For years the school had no Gymnasium, or Cafeteria. Eventually one of the finest Gymnasiums in the valley was built. This was followed by a beautiful Cafeteria. Later a swimming pool was added to the campus. Now all that was lacking to complete the school plant was an Auditorium. Indications are that the new Auditorium which can be used by both the school and the corn- munity will be completed in another year. As our campus has grown we have progressed educationally. Roosevelt is a fully accredited Senior High School. Our former students are do- ing well in Colleges and Universities. Others have advanced in the busi- ness and professional worlds and other fields of endeavor. With maturity our campus has be- come more beautiful, and the gradu- ates who Come Through the Win- dows should continue to take their places as leaders in our growing community. Sincerely, W. R. Hurley Principal MARY PATERSON ARTHUR MILLER cms couNsELoR Bovs couNsELoR FAREWELL . . . DORIS POWELSON This year completes Miss Doris Powelson's twenty-fifth year of education in the field of art at Roosevelt. Her education was received in numerous schools including San Jose State, Fresno State, Stanford, University of California and art schools in Oakland and Sacramento. ln her first years she pioneered along with other new teachers. One of her fondest mem- ories is of the entire school sitting in the audi- torium at one time. The graduation classes of l932 and 1935 re- member her as their head sponsor. For many years she was in charge of the Christmas pageant and sponsored the stagecraft class. ln acknowledgment of a job well done we express our thanks to an unforgetable teacher. ANDREW P. JUHL Since the year l93O, Andrew P. Juhl has been in constant service and guidance to the students of Roosevelt. During these 23 years he has taught German, Latin, Geometry, Social Science and Public Speaking. His vast education was re- ceived in the University of Nebraska, the Univer- sity of Chicago, and the University of Southern California. Upon retirement this year he will end sixty years of attendance in classrooms, first as a pupil then as an educator. Over different periods of time he has been in charge of committees on senior announcements, sweaters and rings. Sponsorship of the California Scholarship Federation has been another of his accomplishments. To Mr. Juhl we offer congratulations for his great contributions of time and effort, along with best wishes for future days. This not so seasonal affliction is more contagious than measles, but more fun than anything. Sufferers may easily be recognized by their highly held heads, tilted chins and walking on air manner. They can be found before school congregated in little groups busily discussing anything from the draft status to the newest fad. Everyone will notice that all the high important offices in school are controlled by these agony stricken sufferers. When thinking back to the time when they were con- sidered underclassmen they are sure to say something about their successful rendition of One Foot ln Heaven. They would also be sure to mention some- thing to the tune of, their play The Man Who Came To Dinner is the best ever given by a graduating class and that their senior prom is 'lShangrila, only in suc- cess to the Spring Fantasy they planned during their Junior year. Symptoms of this universal affliction are numerous and begin early in the ninth grade. When the resist- ance is lowered by the first dance in the Rider Ritz or an algebra exam the victim is sure to contract this malady before long. If by some unknown miracle he manages to escape this ailment while still in the ninth grade by the time he becomes a sophomore and learns about transitive verbs, gets his first dip in the swimming pool, moves to the administration building and finds himself no longer a freshie he is sure to be hooked. When the long awaited day draws near and every senior is measured for his cap and gown all have fi- nally succumbed to his fate, senioritis. Until the day when four hundred and ten hopefuls spread their wings and leap from the windows on to the graduation platform each senior will find himself the victim of this wonderful affliction. Graduation cures all ills and commencement day will bring ,to a close the four happily spent years at Roosevelt and open the road to a shining future to these ambitious young graduates of the class of I953. The seniors led by Wesley Allen this year, Pete Riley in their iunior year, and Lee Bergthold in their sopho- more year give proof that the class of l953 has con- tinually had the pick of the crop when it comes to leadership. Numerous other '53 class members have taken responsible leadership duties in varied clubs and activities. We had a busy year led by Frank Lang, president in the tall term, and Walt Reinhardt in the spring term. As sophomores we chose Ron Pistacchio and Duane Heitzig as our leaders, and selected our canary yellow sweaters and class rings. This year, with Ed Hamill as our president, we followed a busy schedule. Our junior play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, with Frances Wyatt, Sallie lmwall, Jim Jackson, and Ed Gaither, was acclaimed one of the most outstanding in years. We gave the seniors a wonderful prom we're sure they will always remember. We have had many memorable experiences, but are looking forward to next year in which we will fulfill our work here at Roosevelt. As the play was produced on Broadway, it is known to all as a leader in the entertainment field. The cast brought life to these characters within the script be- sides giving its audiences a succession of fine per- formances. Mr. Whiteside, the leading character was loved for his dry humor and loud, boastful wit. As a secretary and a girl in love Maggie set out to overcome Mr. Whiteside and his continual procession of friends. These friends included the whacky Professor Metz, with ten thousand coclcroaches in his possession, and a very suave and sophisticated gentlemen whose name was Beverly Carlton. Also a dangerously beautiful woman, Lorraine Sheldon and the unforgettable curly haired Banio. Each member of the cast put his best foot forward and worked toward our goal, a successful play. The six weeks of constant work went rapidly, yet the goal was definitely accomplished. This production was the final to be played from the old auditorium stage and we are all proud of this great finale to a host of great productions. Why they're penguins! Nancy Armstrong Student Director tl Director Karcher Kiss me, Kiss me! Say something sweet to me, Maggie Oh Cornelia, l don't feel so good. Sophisticated Cornelia and frivolous Emily. JUNIOR PLAY- Our Hearts Were Young And Gay MRS. ELIZABETH KIRCHER, Director This year's Junior Play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, a delight- ful comedy, was the true story of Cornelia Otis Skinner. Cornelia was taking a trip to Europe with Emily Kimborough. Both girls were nineteen years of age. The plot was based on their many adventures. The girls arrived in Paris and resided at a typical Parisian hotel where Cornelia got bit on the lip by a bedbug. Cornelia tried to make an appointment wtih Monsieur de la Croix, as she wanted the famous actor to appraise her acting ability. He was not interested until she happened to mention her renowned father, Otis, and then de la Croix said he would come to the hotel. He watched her perform, and then frankly told her she had no talent. Cornelia was very upset and in her grief gave a monologue, which was one of the highlights of the l952 Junior Play. This means that the Little Brown Pig, symbolic of this annual struggle, will still be housed in the Warrior's pen. The Rough Riders were quick starting but slowly bogged down for the remainder ot the game. Fullback Jerry Hope broke away off tackle for 60 yards for the most spectacular run ofthe game. Short gains were made on passes by Quarterback Zivanich. Vicious tackles halted the pass re- ceivers in most cases. The Warriors eight man line just seemed to break the Riders' back during the entire game. Line Coach Vico Bondietti singled out Bob Alexander, Tom Ryan and Louie Duran for good play in the important contest. Drillers Upset, 14-0 A big highlight of the T952 grid campaign was Roosevelt's l4-O victory over the strong Bakersfield High eleven. The Drillers, winners the previous week over Fresno High, were completely stopped by the inspired play of the Riders. The green and gold showed some brilliant offensive and defensive play but it was the alert recovery of the ball by Dick Duley and Tex Bryant that set up the touchdowns. An interception by Bryant set up the first Rider touchdown. Duley's alertness in the second quarter set the stage forthe second score. Fullback Jerry Hope, playing one of his best games, piled up o total of 53 yards. Linemen Ed Micheli, Bob Shelly and Ron Pistacchio were lauded for their brilliant play. Astute quarterbacking by Roy Zivanich was also an important factor in the win, Although fumbles proved costly to the Pioneers, the Riders dominated play throughout the game, especially in the first half. Ken Bain, Mike Kezerian and Bob Shelly shined on both offense and defense. Riders 27-Madera 6 Roosevelt's second Yosemite League victory came at the expense of the Madera Coyotes, 27-6. Gaining a total of 340 yards, the Riders ripped open the northerners line to send through Halfbacks Bob Britton, Max Hansford and Fullback Jerry Hope. Roy Zivanich had a hand in the total yards gained by throwing l8 passes, completing over half for a total of 83 yards. Leading the green and gold line were Dick Duley, Allan Eldred and Don Kloppenburg. Good team work and spirit highlighted the second league victory. Roosevelt 26- Hanford 6 A journey south on October 3lst proved a victory march as the Riders downed the weak Hanford Bullpups 26-6, making it three wins in a row. Time after time Halfback Tex Bryant and Fullback Cal Fox, playing in the place of the iniured Jerry Hope, broke loose for sizeable chunks of yardage. Defenders were also given a workout by Ends Mike Kezerian and Chuck Leimbach who were on the receiving end of many passes from Halfback Ron Mosier and Pistol Pete Riley. VARSITY BASKETBALL HEAD COACH STU INMAN The 1952-53 basketball season proved to be one of the most successful in many years. Not conceded much of a chance at the start of the year the Rough Riders proved to be the real dark horse of the Yosemite League. Upsets and stellar play throughout the entire season made the Riders a threat in every game this year. Highlights of the season were double victories over Fresno High with one in their own gym and one in ours and two wins over the powerful Madera quintet. Veterans Elmer Palacios, Dave Stalhut, Milton Wallace, and Cody Landers carried the bulk of the load with Juniors Gary Alcorn, Duane Heitzig, and Gil Alanis coming through with great supporting roles, particularly in the clutch. Pala- cios, Stalhut, Ward, and Landers are the only Seniors on this year's team. The returning juniors, Wallace, Heitzig, Alcorn, Westerland, and Alanis should form the nucleus of a strong Rider five for the 1953-54 season. The play of this year's Rider cagemen has been spirited by the tremendous hustle, determination, and attitude of truly great athletes. Congratu- lations to the 1952-53 basketball team. Skippy Winn, Walt Reinhardt, and newcomer Burle Davis formed a good catching staff. Veteran infielders Roy Zivanich, Larry Garcia, Dave Stalhut, and Gil Alanis were on hand. ln the outfield several boys were battling for the three starting positions: Milton Wallace, Larry Kaprielian, Ken Jacobsen, Larry Fox, Dick Arvanigian, Ron Karabian, Elton Willis, and Harvey Cook. Three exceptional managers in Roy Takakiian, John Topalian, and Hal Minor, and a former student, Hal Barnell, ably assisted in coach- ing the Varsity. The Rough Rider's season was partly successful with the winning of the Delano Tournament, April 2 and 4. The Riders won four straight games. The wins were over the Porterville, Tulare, Bakersfield, and East Bakersfield nines. Congratulations to the coach and the team. 1953 SCHEDULE GAMES PLAYED OLLIE BIDWELL Coach vs ............. FRESNO HIGH The Big-Little Game was anxiously anticipated this year by the whole Roosevelt student body. Our school spirit was boosted by marches played from the bell tower a week preceding the game. The day of the game our spirit was at its peak. A serpentine led by our energetic yell leader, Maria Lucidi, wound its way over the campus and through the halls. A Beat High dance incorporated with a pre- lirninary rally was held in the cafeteria. The big rally, plan- ned by able Joe Deaton, was highlighted by an interview with a replica of Highs star player, Tom Thaxter, and a hilarious style show spiced by Mrs. Kircher's commentary.
